MODISMOS EN INGLS
Un modismo es un hbito, un lugar comn, una costumbre lingstica que tiene la
funcin de ahorrar energa, encontrndose en todas las lenguas y en el habla de
todas las personas. Hay ocasiones en que un modismo se confunde con un refrn;
sin embargo, en muchos casos s es posible diferenciarlos claramente a travs de
tres aspectos:
El refrn tiene un sentido pedaggico, tiende a educar, por ejemplo A quien madruga
Dios le ayuda. Este refrn nos dice que deberamos ser madrugadores, diligentes,
activos, para alcanzar algunos beneficios, o Zapatero, a tus zapatos, haciendo
referencia que las personas deben hacer aquello para lo que estn preparadas.
El refrn suele tener rima. Esto se debe a que la rima refuerza el aprendizaje, la
memorizacin y el recuerdo, por ejemplo, Juego de manos, juego de villanos.
Un modismo, en cambio, no educa, no tiene esa intencin, es generalmente una frase,
pero hay casos en que hemos incluido palabras solas para facilitar la comunicacin, por
ejemplo, en la expresin en ingles Right away, la palabra right significa derecho,
razn, derecha, justicia, bien, exacto, directamente; por otro lado, la palabra
away" significa fuera, afuera. Las palabras juntas o el modismo Right away,
significa entonces inmediatamente, ahora mismo, en seguida
Entonces, adems de saber lo que significan las palabras en ingls, debemos ir
aprendiendo los modismos. Modismos se dice Idioms en ingls, y significa
modismo, expresin idiomtica, frase hecha
a. John kept on talking although the teacher asked him several times to stop.
b. The boy kept his coat on because he was cold.
11. To be in charge of (manage, be responsible for) (dirigir, estar a cargo de).
Ejemplos:
a. Henry is in charge of the office while Mr. Smith is away.
b. Who is in charge of the arrangements for the dance next week?
12. To look into (investigate, examine carefully) (investigar, examinar). Ejemplos:
a. The police are looking into the past record of the suspect.
b. The electrician has promised to look into our faulty wiring and give us an estimate
next week
13. Up to date (timely, modern, brought up to the present time) (moderno, al da, al
corriente)
a. This mail-order catalogue is not up date. It was published several years ago.
b. That new modern structure is one of the most modern and up to date apartment
houses in the city
14. To fill out (complete, said of blanks, forms) (llenar, completar). Ejemplos:
a. Every prospective employee must fill out an application bank, giving his name,
address, previous position, etc.
b. When she applied for her passport, Grace had to fill out a half dozen different forms
and had some difficulty in filling them out.
15. To turn down (reduce in speed or volume, also to reject) (rechazar, reducir).
Ejemplos:
a. Please, turn down the radio. Its too loud.
b. His application for a position with that company was turned down.
c. William tried to join the Navy but he was turned down because of his poor eyesight.
16. To get up (rise, lift, stand) (levantar o levantarse). Ejemplos:
a. The sun rises every morning.
b. Jim lifts the box from the floor.
c. The teacher stands at the door.
17. To get away (escape, leave) (huir, salir). Ejemplos:
a. The thieves went away when the police arrived.
b. He was getting away of work while I was closing the door
a. Donna gets in to the finishing line second at the back of Gina Velarde.
b. They entered the room very late in the night.
19. To go in(to) (enter, pass) (entrar, pasar). Ejemplos:
a. Please, go into the house, its raining.
b. Mom goes in the kitchen to make the food.
20. To go on (continue, follow) (continuar, seguir). Ejemplos:
a. They went on talking though the teacher told them to stop.
b. Follow the examples in the book, please.
21. To go out (extinguish, leave, rise) (apagar, apagarse, salir). Ejemplos:
a. The fire went out easily.
b. The man left the house as soon as his wife was ready
22. To go up (explode, raise) (explotar, levantar, levantarse, subir). Ejemplos:
a. The bomb will go up early in the morning.
b. He wants to go up his salary
23. To go away (disappear, leave, escape) (desaparecer, salir, escapar, huir).
Ejemplos:
a. They went away as soon as they could.
b. Mary escaped from the robbers.
24. To go ahead (seguir, continuar). Ejemplos:
a. Please, go ahead with your speech.
b. If you want to go ahead, do it.
25. To call off (cancelar, suspender una cita). Ejemplos:
a. The doctor called the appointment off.
b. The judge wanted to call of the audience.
26. To call up (llamar, reclutar). Ejemplos:
a. Every body was called up by their names.
b. That man was called up for the navy

Significa debajo de, bajo de. Tiene el mismo significado que el prefijo Under.
Ejemplos:
Way / subway = va / va subterrnea
Marine / submarine = marino / submarino
Total / subtotal = total / subtotal
Prefijo En
Acta aumentando positivamente el sustantivo que acompae; significa poner en
estado de (en el sentido que indique el sustantivo). Ejemplos:
Large / enlarge = grande / agrandar
Danger / endanger = peligro / poner en peligro
Force / enforce = fuerza / esfuerzo
Prefijo Re
Significa otra vez, vuelta o repeticin de una accin. Se presente acompaando a
verbos y puede estar unido a travs de un guin. Ejemplos:
Come / recome = venir / volver
Load / re-load = cargar / recargar
Prefijo Dis
Es una negacin que acompaa frecuentemente a sustantivos. Significa des, in.
Ejemplos:
Infectant / desinfectant = infectante / desinfectante
Arm / disarm = armar / desarmar
Obey / disobey = obedecer / desobedecer
Prefijo Over
Significa sobre, demasiado, excesivo, ms de. Ejemplos:
Charge / overcharge = carga / sobrecarga
Time / overtime = tiempo, vez / horas extras, sobre tiempo
Dose / overdose = dosis / sobredosis
Prefijo Under
Significa sub, des, menos, bajo. Tiene el mismo significado que el prefijo sub.
Ejemplos:
Developed / underdeveloped = desarrollado / subdesarrollado
Production / underproduction = produccin / subproduccin
Paid / underpaid = pagado / subpagado
Prefijo il

Prefijo Im
Prefijo de negacin que significa lo contrario a, sin, in. Ejemplos:
Material / immaterial = material / inmaterial
Posible / impossible = posible / imposible
Moral / immoral = moral / inmoral
Prefijo Semi
Prefijo de negacin que traduce semi e indica final, parcial o mitad. Ejemplos:
Final / semifinal = final / semifinal
Circle / semicircle = crculo / semcirculo
Prefijo A
Significa oposicin, negacin. Ejemplos:
Moral / amoral = moral / amoral
Sexual / asexual = sexual /asexual
Symetric / asymetric = simtrico / asimtrico.
Prefijo Ir
Significa oposicin. Ejemplos:
Regular / irregular = regular / irregular.
Relevant / irrelevant = relevante / irrelevante.
Prefijo Mal
Significa defectuoso, fuera de lo normal. Ejemplos:
Treat / maltreat = tratar / maltratar, tratar mal.
Practice / malpractice = prctica / mal prctica, mal procedimiento.
SUFIJOS
Los sufijos se derivan de la palabra y siempre se colocan al final de la misma (finish /
finished = terminar / terminado. Existen diferentes tipos de sufijo. Entre los que ms se
destacan se tienen los siguientes.
Sufijo Ed
Se utiliza para pasar los verbos regulares de presentes a pasados o pasado participio.
Tiene el significado de ado, ido. Ejemplos:
Like / liked = gustar / gustado.
Start / started = comenzar / comenzado.
Finish / finished = terminar / terminado.
Sufijo S, Es
Detrs de los sustantivos se utiliza para indicar los plurales o verbos en presente simple
para la tercera persona del singular. Ejemplos:
House / houses = casa / casas.
Dish / dishes = plato / platos.
Study / studies = estudiar / estudia
Dance / dances = bailar / baila
Sufijo Ing
Se coloca detrs de los verbos para indicar el gerundio. Tiene significado de ando o
iendo. Ejemplos:
Read / reading = leer / leyendo
Eat / eating = comer / comiendo
Sleep / sleeping = dormir / durmiendo.
Walk / walking = caminar / caminando.
Sufijo Able
Sufijo que forma adjetivos a partir de verbos. No se aplica a sustantivos. Significa
able, ible. Ejemplos:
Drink / drinkable = beber / bebible.
Reason / reasonable = razonar / razonable.
Enjoy / enjoyable = disfrutar / disfrutable.
Sufijo Ful
Es agregado a sustantivos para formar sustantivos y adjetivos, significa ada, ado,
ido, oso. Ejemplos:
Wonder / wonderful = maravilla / maravilloso.
Color / colorful = color / colorido

Sufijo Ship
Se emplea de una manera muy variada para denotar: cualidades abstractas, arte o
destreza, dignidad, oficio, cargo, o ttulo, la duracin de una accin. Por lo general
significa cion, a. Ejemplos:
Citizen / citizenship = ciudadano / ciudadana
Dictador / dictatorship = dictador / dictadura
Sufijo Less
Este sufijo nos brinda la posibilidad de alterar sustantivos para obtener adjetivos.
Siendo muy til cuando tratamos con los comparativos. Es un sufijo tipo negacin y el
cual significa sin. Ejemplos:
Worth / worthless = til / intil
Hope / hopeless = esperanza / sin esperanza
Home / homeless = casa / sin casa, sin techo
Sufijo Tion
Significa cion, or, permite transformar verbos en sustantivos. Ejemplos:
Educate / education = educar / educacin
Pollute / pollution = contaminar / contaminacin
Invent / invention = inventar / invencin
Sufijo Th
Th agregado a nmeros cardinales nos permite obtener nmeros ordinales. Por otro
lado, agregado a verbos le imprime un sentido positivo. Ejemplos:
Five / fifth = cinco / quinto
Ten / tenth = diez / dcimo
Eleven / eleventh = once / undcimo
Sufijo Ish
El sufijo ish se le agrega a sustantivos para formar adjetivos y as indicar semejanza o
atenuacin. Ejemplos:
Woman / womanish = mujer / como mujer, mujeril
Boy / boyish = nio / como nio
Sufijo Hood
Cuando agregamos el sufijo hood a un sustantivo concreto, obtenemos un sustantivo
abstracto. Ejemplos:
Mother / motherhood = madre / maternidad.
Likely / likelihood = probable / probabilidad.
Child / childhood = nio / niez

Sufijo Er
Cuando agregamos el sufijo er a un adjetivo corto, se obtiene un grado comparativo.
En algunos sustantivos o verbos se utiliza para derivar de las palabras algunas
profesiones. Ejemplos:
Short / shorter = corto / ms corto.
Easy / easier = fcil / ms fcil
Bank / banker = banco / banquero.
Drive / driver = conducir / conductor
Dance / dancer = bailar / bailarn(a)
Sufijo Est
Cuando agregamos el sufijo est a un adjetivo corto, se obtiene un adjetivo superlativo.
Ejemplos:
Short / shortest = corto / el ms corto.
Big / biggest = grande / el ms grande.
Easy / easiest / fcil / el ms fcil.
Sufijo Ly
Significa mente, oso, ado. Ejemplos:
Bad / badly = mal / malamente.
Open / openly = abierto / abiertamente.
Water / waterly = agua / acuoso
Month / monthly = mes / mensualmente.
Sufijo Y
Indica abundancia. Tambin se utiliza para indicar diminutivo. Significa ito, ita.
Ejemplos:
Dog / doggy = perro / perrito.
Dad / daddy = pap / papi, papito.
Anger / angry = enojo / enojado.
Noise / noisy = ruido / ruiodoso.
Sufijo Ous
A travs de este sufijo se transforma un sustantivo en adjetivo. Ejemplos:
Danger / dangerous = peligro / peligroso.
Fame / famous = fama / famoso
Prosper / prosperous = Prosperar / Prspero.
Fury / furious = furia / furioso.
