Based on counseling directory(2015), client centered therapy is defined by personcentred counseling or client-centered counseling - is a humanistic approach that deals

with the
ways in which individuals perceive themselves consciously rather than how a counselor can
interpret their unconscious thoughts or ideas. In my opinion, this client centered theory is widely
used and it is also known as multicultural counseling contexts.
In this theory there are several things that we should know as a counselor or client. The
very first thing is self awareness which is the counselors values and assumptions will make the
client to choose his or her own path in response to their own values. According to Journal of
Humanistic Psychology which talk about Rogerss person centered approach or also known as
client centered therapy, each counselor have their own way to attract the clients and theyll
consider with their approaches and techniques to fit the individuals needs.
Generally, there are few factors that counselor should take into considerations;
therapeutic relationship, shared worldview, client expectations and ritual or intervention. All of
these should be considered in this version of therapy. The same basics things for the counselor
to take note on like what do I need to know about this client? at the same time, we should
create our own environment where the clients expectation will be raised. Furthermore, as I
practice having counseling in my class with my friends, I saw that some of them are really good
in using this therapy until they can make AHA points of view from the clients.
It is also can be categorized as less open to cultural bias. This is because, Rogers
theory was built based on specific and intimate observations of traits in relationships. This was
agreed by Pederson(1991) as he said similar behaviour can have different meaning and
different bahaviours may have same meaning.

In my opinion, the individualism and

independence of a counselor is very important. The validation, support, approval from others
are important in order to attract and make people understands us.
As far as Im concern, this therapy is good to be used because it is also aware of the
clients culture. One of the processes in this therapy is the counselor need to view the client not
from their reference but from the clients internal reference. It is one of the best ways for the
counselor to resist, adapt and to find alternatives in working with culturally different clients. As
for the process of healing the problems, I think the counselor should not be culturally bias but
they have to provide culturally responsive forms of treatment as it is the most important

explanation for the problems occurred. This theory somehow allows the counselors accountable
for the applicability of their clients culture. As this theory had been practice traditionally, it is
known as the most appropriate theory. However it is viewed as revolutionary as it changed the
way client were thought in the counseling process (Natiello,1990). This reminds me to my
previous secondary school time, my teacher who is a counselor always this technique to
capture my friends attention. She uses this client centered approach individually, small groups
and also in big group. All of it gives her the good result and helped her to overcome the
problem.
Another point that I believe in this therapy is where the counselor able to responsive to
clients, and change the therapeutic styles, have greater freedom in using a helping styles that
may not be congruent with the clients world view. When the counselor have this working styles,
it will be success if clients feel their counselor understand them and their reasons for their
symptoms and provide a process of healing that make sense; this is stated by Atkinson,
Thompson and Grant in 1993.
In conclusion, in my perspective, a counselor should give and take as it has to be open
to different roles that may include giving advice, making suggestions, disclosing thoughts and
feelings. This is because; we are the humans who will always make mistakes without our
conscious. So, the easiest way is for us to give and take each and every thing happen in our
life. I believe this will lead us to a better way of thinking and have a great life ahead.
