Ladies High TeaThank you!

Thank you to all those who attended the Ladies High
Tea last Saturday in the Church Hall, in support of
housing for Aids Orphans in Tzaneen, South Africa.
What a phenomenal success! The feedback has been
exceptionally positive. The hall looked amazing thanks
to our wonderful band of helpers. The food was a
delight and there were plenty of
opportunities to grab a bargain.
Our guest speaker Linda Norris,
gave a heartfelt talk about her
experience in Tzaneen and
Uganda which brought a tear to
many. What was truly amazing
was the financial outpouring of
support. Raised funds totalled
$5,420. A fantastic effort by
everyone involved.

From the Pastors Desk

people we want to hear our message are with us I

suspect we are simply preaching to the choir!!! And to
speak without love, I am simply a gong booming or a
cymbal clashing (1Cor 12:32)

Dear Parish Friends,

I wish to thank you all for the lovely and generous way
that you have welcomed me here to Forster-Tuncurry.
I hope over the next little bit that I will get to know all
your names and something of your story as you will
get to know something of mine. You might have to
remind me a few times what your Christian name is. It
will take me a little while to find my way around and
to get to know you all.

As a result of some letters and concerns contained

therein I did watch the Gay Mardi Gras and apart from
a couple of floats on the most part each float or
participant seemed to simply call for some form of
acceptance, understanding or tolerance: in some ways
quite ironic. It was interesting to see the large number
of Serving men and women, Fire personnel and SES
members as well as members of our Police Force
marching. Thankfully dressed and in uniform, all
supporting the broader issue of inclusion and
acceptance. Arent they our Gospel values?

I have been asked by a couple of people to make

comment regarding Gregs article in the newsletter
last week. I appreciate that on the most part you were
all very respectful in the way that you rang or wrote to
either offer support and thanks to Greg, or make
complaint and raise issue with what was said to me.
Thank you very much for the way that this has
occurred it is really good to note that we can have
issue with each other as a community and be
respectful and sensitive.

Mostly too it reminded me that we are dealing with a

sensitive issue that involves individuals and families
who have been hurt or are hurting, real people who
would love to know, I believe, that they are loved by
God and in some way supported by Gods Holy
people.

Firstly I should say that nothing was printed in the

newsletter last week without my say so: Gregs article
included. As someone pointed out quite eloquently
the buck stops with me; that will be true for each
and every newsletter into the future and I take that
role very seriously.

As I voted recently (I always vote early) I wondered

how many of my actions inadvertently support one
sinful act or another. My confession to you is that I
voted Green in the upper house and Labour in the
lower house. I dont like the Liberals policy on
refugees amongst a number of other policies which
seem not to support the poor and marginalised.
However in voting for these two parties I am in one
way or another supporting Euthanasia and Abortion
and same sex marriage - arent I? Jesus ate with
prostitutes and tax collectors he didnt become one or
encourage them to be one.

I hope we all know that homosexuality of itself is not a

sin and neither is the homosexual person; at least no
more of themselves than any heterosexual person.
The catechism and the teaching of the church does
make this very clear (catechism 2357 homosexual
acts). Its what we do with our sexuality that sets up
the dynamic for sin. What some gay people will do
with their sexuality will be sinful as it will be for some
heterosexual people. We know that, right? Even in
that the Church sets up a process which allows us to
differentiate between love of the sinner and disdain
for the sin. Of course we all know that. So when we
make comment it is really important that we too
differentiate between homosexuality and homosexual
acts. What I liked about Gregs article is that it sets
that dynamic; love the sinner without supporting
necessarily the sin (catechism 2358: They must be
accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity.)

To finish the debate can I leave you with the words of

our Pontiff Pope Francis: 'If a person is gay and seeks
God and has good will, who am I to judge?' And for
now I would like this to be the last word.
Thanks everyone for your comments and of course
your very kind welcome.
Fr Greg

Pacific Emergency Appeal

By now you are well aware of the devastating cyclone
to hit Vanuatu. Caritas has opened a Pacific
Emergency Appeal to respond to the urgent and
immediate needs such as food, shelter and clean
water to support the devastation.

The other part of Gregs article I liked is that it offered

a challenge: if we want Gay men and women to hear
our message of chastity or indeed any of our
messages on the values and morals of our Church we
have to be where they are. Isnt that what Jesus
instructed his disciples to do? Isnt that what Jesus
did? As we know we can preach it in our Churches till
the proverbial cows come home but unless the

Homily by Fr Michael Tate

breath down over them, handing over the breath of

God, the Holy Spirit to them.

We want to see Jesus

In recent months, there have been a couple of young
mothers with their newly born infants at Mass.

This was the beginning of the new family of God.

Animated by that Holy Spirit, it immediately erupted
into the Roman Empire and Jews and non Jews in
large numbers were attracted, drawn to, the One
lifted up on the cross. Why?

I see the baby, observe that it is there, watch it

somewhat, but the mothers (and the fathers) see the
baby very differently. They gaze with total fascination,
trying to perceive what this little bundle of flesh is
really all about, trying to get an insight into that
nascent personality, visualising a possible future,
hoping for a response.

Because it showed the length to which Jesus of

Nazareth was prepared to go, the suffering he was
prepared to endure in order to persevere in his
mission. That mission was to proclaim and live out the
message that his Heavenly Father was full of mercy
and compassion and wanted all people to share in
Divine Life.

This Gospel passage begins with a request from some

Greeks, i.e. non Jews, to see Jesus, surely in all the
senses I outlined concerning those new parents, not
simply to observe him.

Sticking to that mission led to Jesus being lifted up on

the cross, being buried in the ground like a grain of
wheat, only to rise to new life, an abundantly fruitful
life, fruitful for you, me, and potentially for the whole
of humanity.

They were trying to perceive what this Jesus of

Nazareth was really all about, trying to get an insight
into his personality, imagining a possible future
hoping for a response.

That is what we will shortly see with the eyes of faith

in the unfolding of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and
Easter Day.

And there was a response, a response full of allusions

to the future.
An insight into who he was and what he must endure
and the purpose of it all.

Let us look forward to joining in those rituals and

ceremonies.

Amen, Amen, I say to you; Unless a grain of wheat

falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it
dies it will bear much fruit.

Let us allow ourselves to be drawn to the One lifted

up, buried, the fruitful source of our life: Jesus of
Nazareth, our Saviour and the Lord who draws all
humanity to himself.

Jesus is that grain of wheat. He died and was buried in

the earth and that death was fruitful for the whole of
humankind.

Fr Michael Tate

But, Jesus faces this dying with some apprehension,

some anxiety: Now is my soul troubled. Why?
Because Jesus can see the awful prelude to his being
buried in the ground: And when I am lifted up I will
draw all people to myself.

Parish Social Justice Group

The permanent principles of the Church's social
doctrine . . . are: the dignity of the human person, the
common good, subsidiarity, and solidarity. These
principles, the expression of the whole truth about the
human person known by reason and faith, are born of
"the encounter of the Gospel message and of its
demands summarised in the supreme commandment
of love of God and neighbour in justice with the
problems
emanating
from
the
life
of
society" (Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the
Church par.160).
The local Social Justice Discussion Group creates
opportunities for interested people to share ideas and
respond to the social justice challenges of our
time. The Parish Social Justice Group is open to the
community and all are invited to attend the next
meeting on Wednesday 25th March at 5:30pm in the
Parish Hall Meeting Room, Forster.

What was the lifting up? He was laid on the cross

beams and nailed to them in the cruellest manner by
the soldiers of the Roman occupying army, and then
the cross was lifted up and dropped upright into a
hole in the ground. Imagine the agony. No wonder his
soul was troubled at the prospect.
And yet, our Lord says of that scene: When I am lifted
up I will draw all people to myself.
He didnt appear to on the day! According to this
Gospel, all but one of the male disciples had fled. This
disciple, along with some women including Mary, the
mother of Jesus, stood huddled at the foot of the
cross.
And yet, this was the beginning of the Christian
church. Jesus bowed his head and breathed his last
