10%postconsumerpaper.1
Whatcanbeimprovedintheproduct?
Duringrecycling,thepolyethyleneliningmustberemovedfromthepaper
liningbecausethesedifferentmaterialsgothroughdifferentprocesses.Themajorities
oftransferstations donothavetheinfrastructureorcostefficiencymotivationto
separatethem.Thus,Starbuckscannotimplementreverselogisticsworldwideandits
notcostefficientorsustainabletotransportandrecycletheminhouse.(Kong,2013) 2
Also,althoughthecompanysgoalby2015istohavefrontofstorerecyclinginallof
its stores, about80%ofthecupsarestilltakenoutbythecustomers andthe
majorityofthemendupinthelandfillafterbeingcollectedbythelocalgarbage
trucks. Therefore, Starbucks should design and implement 100% recyclable or
compostablecupsforitshotdrinks.
On the other hand, the recycling centers use machines during the highly
energyintensivepulpingprocessandfuelfossilincollectionorredistribution.Thus,
asabetteralternativetodegradation,thecompanycouldalsoincineratethepaper
cupstorecoveraround0.16MJ/cupofenergy.
Nevertheless,thecompanyintroducedareusablecupmadeofpolypropylene
(PP)thatcanbecomingledthatmightincreaselocalcenterswillingnesstorecycle

Whatcanbeimprovedintheprocess?
Recyclingcentres,admitthatmorecoffeecupsneedtoberecycledinorderfor
theprocesstobeprofitableandthatifcupsarecontaminatedwithmorethan15%of
liquidorothermaterials,itbecomesverydifficulttoworkwiththematthemill.
Thus,Starbuckscouldeithershareitsknowhowwithothercompaniessothat
the infrastructure could be improved through R&D collaboration 3 or it could
