A company that invents and manufactures agricultural

machinery, BCS Ferrari, the brainchild of Luigi
Castoldi, was established in the 1940s and has gone
on to revolutionise the farming industry; becoming
an iconic name within the sector. Marketing Director,
Carlo Cislaghi reveals more to Sophie Roche.

s one of the worlds leading

producers of power mowers
and powered cultivators, Italian
company BCS has taken
it upon itself to change the way the
agricultural sector works; developing
highly technical machinery that has
revolutionised the farming world. The
company is succeeding in delivering
the best possible machinery to its
customers, with Mr. Cislaghi stating, We
often associate the word farmer with
the image of an old person working the
fields. This is a common misconception.
The current agricultural niche markets
are represented by young people
willing to look at things in a different
way, trying new solutions and making
them work. This is the reason why our
company has the obligation to adapt to
these innovative ideas and customise
the machines according to modern
requirements. BCS was established

over half a century ago in the early
40s. At this time, working in the fields
was a manually operated procedure,
until young engineer Luigi Castoldi
devised the first self-propelled motormower; a piece of equipment that both
saved on manpower and propelled
the brand, into a whirlwind of success.
The company and equipment began
life in the inventors small workshop in
Abbiategrasso, a small town near Milan;
both have since developed into globally
recognised brands and agricultural
staples.

Tradition and highpowered opportunities

Described by the current companys

Marketing Director, Carlo Cislaghi, as a

very classic and traditional company,

BCSs highly skilled management team
and dedication to the agricultural industry
have ensured that the brand is an iconic
name amongst farmers worldwide.
Its extensive customer portfolio trusts
that high-quality, reliable machinery
will be provided by the company and
innovation will come as part of the
package. The company is always on
the lookout for new opportunities to
improve its range and has maintained
a steady growth since establishment.
Since it was established, BCS has
never done anything out of the ordinary,
declares Cislaghi. But year after year
our company has always invested in new
technology to help farmers maximise
their productivity. Personally I would
identify BCS as a tiger business,
basically a robust company that walks
at a stealthy and cautious pace, but
when it catches a glimpse of opportunity
for growth it is there ready to pounce!
Looking at the groups history, BCS is

indeed a predator of opportunities.

MOSA, founded by Castoldi in 1963,
was acquired with the intention of
developing high-quality, professional
engine driven welders and generating
sets. Then in 1988, BCS grabbed
the chance to strengthen its position
within the agricultural market and

acquired FERRARI, a competitor and

manufacturing company of special and
two-wheel tractors. The same thing
happened in 1999 when PASQUALI,
another internationally renowned
farming company that specialised in
manufacturing machinery, was also
incorporated into the Group. BCS, today
run by Fabrizio Castoldi, the founders
son, has managed to conquer global
markets by combining its four brands
and establishing a superbrand: BCS is by far the
biggest brand within the group,
followed by MOSA, FERRARI
and PASQUALI,
acknowledges Cislaghi.
BCS is present
within the markets of
over 100 countries
spanning across
five continents.
Approximately 45
per cent of our turnover
comes from Europe.
Italy followed by Spain,
Portugal, Germany and France
are our largest markets in terms of
sales. In addition to the success
already attained in these markets, BCS
has recently recorded a 70 per cent
increase in sales within Turkey and is
increasing its share in other countries
such as USA, South Korea and India.
Thanks to this high volume of sales,
BCS can boast a leadership status within
its industry; however Cislaghi confirms
that the group also intends to expand its
position further within the international
markets, showing particular interest in
South America, China and Russia.

The pioneering spirit

that led to success

BCS has a pioneering spirit that has

earned it its status as an agricultural
leader. Its innovative products continually
appear in new markets and its reputation
of good-quality makes it a popular
brand within the farming sector. It
boasts popularity amongst a range of

sub-categories within the agricultural

field, including mechanisation; greens
maintenance; autonomous power
generation and mobile welding. Since
it began, the brand has pushed the
boundaries for farming technology and
marketed pioneering machinery that
has revolutionised the industry. It is not
only famous for launching the first selfpropelled motor-mowers in the world but
for many other market achievements.
In 2003 MOSAs technical team
developed the DSP (Digital Signal
Processor), a digital electronic welding
control considered a worldwide
innovation. In 2005 BCS designed a
new steering system for its tractors,
which received a patent under the
name DUALSTEER. Two years later
the company launched EasyDrive,
a unique hydro-mechanical system
to control forward and reverse drives;

adapting it to its motor-mowers. Weve

always invested and always will invest
in visionary ideas and innovative
products with a far-sighted willingness
to bolster the ultimate success of
the end user: our customer, affirms
Cislaghi. We endeavour to provide
tangible, measurable and lasting
benefits, by providing machines that
offer unparalleled production efficiency
and reliability. Examples of this
include the 2009 all-new hydraulic
clutch POWERSAFE, designed for
the companys two wheel tractors
and the 2010 NEVA (New EVolution
hArvester); a professional range of
reaping machines. According to Cislaghi,
BCS has many new projects lined up for
the future that will exceed its customers
expectations and promise the company
continued success.
BCS has proven its track record for
supplying state-of-the-art machinery
to the agricultural sector and has the
makings to continue doing so for years
to come. The companys pioneering
spirit and dedication to its craft, ensures
that the brand remains successful
and continues as a leader in its field.
Cislaghi confirms this as he summarises
BCSs objective, manufacturing high
technology machinery and outperforming
our competitors is not just our time-tested
strategy its also our vision for the
future. l
