Celebration turns township Greek for a day

St. Thomas Greek Orthodox Church marks 194th anniversary of Greeces independence with procession
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
On March 19, an Independence
Day celebration was held in Cherry Hill Township.
Dozens of people marched up
Mercer Street in Cherry Hill from
St. Thomas Church to the Cherry
Hill Municipal Building to celebrate the day. Students from St.
Thomass after-school program
led the procession.
Being in March, this wasnt a
celebration of the United States
Independence Day. The group
marching down Mercer Street
was celebrating the 194th anniversary of Greeces Independence Day.
A Greek Orthodox Church, St.
Thomas consists of residents
from Burlington, Camden and
Gloucester counties. Emmauel
Pratsinakis,
pastor
of
St.
Thomas, said the church has put
on this Greek Independence Day
celebration for 29 years.
The official date for Greek Independence Day is March 25 and
commemorates the beginning of
the War of Greek Independence
from the Ottoman Empire in 1821.
The war lasted until 1832.
Pratsinakis said the holiday

St. Thomas commemorated the

day last Thursday with a procession down Mercer Street. After

proclaiming a short hymn called

members of the community
marched out of the church, with
the Greek and American flags
leading the way.
During the presentation at the
municipal building, Pratsinakis
talked of how similar the themes
of Greek Independence Day were
to the United States. Everyone
was there to celebrate liberty and
honor those who sacrificed their
lives for Greeces independence.
The after-school program is a
big part of the Independence Day
event. In addition to the procession, the school also holds an Independence Day show for the
community.
Pratsinakis said, It has songs
and folk dancing.
Pratsinakis said the kids at St.
Thomas are very interested in
learning about Greeces history
and embracing their heritage.
The kids really have a keen
understanding and appreciation
they hail from Greece, he said.
Some are 50 percent Greek, some
are 10 percent and some are 1 percent. Its phenomenal.

School district continues to discuss

turf proposal from committee, township
District must decide whether to accept proposal by end of May
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
The Cherry Hill Public Schools
Board of Education has yet to
make a decision regarding a proposal to install turf football fields
at Cherry Hill East and Cherry
Hill West next year.
However, the time the district
has to make a decision on the
project is beginning to count
down.
Elliott Roth, vice president of
the board of education and chairman of the strategic planning
committee, updated the full board
on the status of the townships
turf proposal at the March 10
work session.
In February, the athletics facilities committee presented to the
board of educations strategic
planning committee a proposal to

install turf at the football fields of

Cherry Hill East and Cherry Hill
West high schools. Under the proposal, the township would manage the project and pay for it upfront. The school district and the
township would cover half of the
projects cost, with the district reimbursing the township after the
project is completed. Bridget
Palmer, director of communications for Cherry Hill Township,
confirmed the project is in an exploratory stage.
The board of education had a
brief discussion on the topic because of the short timeframe.
Roth said the district has to make
a decision in the next two months
if it wants to move forward for
next year.
In order for that to happen,
the mayor needs to get it into the
2015-16 budget, Roth said.

Maureen Reusche to take superintendent position at Haverford Township

By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Cherry Hill Public Schools will be losing
a familiar face in the administration, as
Superintendent Maureen Reusche will
leave the district after the 2014-15 school
year.
School district public information officer Barbara Wilson confirmed Reusches
departure last Thursday. Reusche will
leave the school district to take the superintendent position at the Haverford Township School District in Pennsylvania on
July 1.
Reusche could not be reached for comment prior to press time.
Reusche came to Cherry Hill Public
Schools in July of 2011, taking over after
the retirement of former superintendent
David Campbell. She had previously
served as an assistant superintendent in
the school district from 2007 to 2011, super-

vising the offices of

curriculum,
assessment and research, special education, and student services. Previously, she was assistant superintendent in Radnor, Pa., from 2003 to
2007.
The Cherry Hill
board of education reREUSCHE
leased a statement last
Thursday expressing
disappointment in Reusche's decision.
However, it acknowledged the growth the
school district has seen in the nearly four
years she has been superintendent.
"Under Dr. Reusches leadership, our district became home to some of the most talented, experienced and caring administrative leaders in the state, both at the building level and in central administration,
and we are confident that the district will

continue to move forward with district initiatives during the transition process to a
new superintendent," the board said.
The district has undergone a number of
changes during Reusche's tenure, including the lengthening of the school day at the
middle and high school levels and overseeing curriculum and technology changes
coming with the implementation of Common Core Standards in New Jersey.
One initiative Reusche took the lead on
just after she was hired was making the
schools more sustainable. One of the first
people she reached out to was Lori Braunstein, founder of Sustainable Cherry Hill.
She contacted me in my role as founder
of Sustainable of Cherry Hill and was interested in making this be one of her priorities," Braunstein said.
Last year, the school district unveiled a
sustainability plan. The plan outlined proplease see SEARCH, page 10

Public Works working to repair potholes

By Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez

The Camden County Department of Public Works is blitzing

the roadways with several crews
to repair potholes created by the
historic winter weather. For a second year in a row, record temperatures and precipitation have
taken a significant toll on the
countys highway system. To
combat the effects of this winter,
the county freeholder board will
aggressively locate and fill potholes on all county maintained
roads.
Crews have been dispatched
throughout the highways and byways of the county to put down
thousands of tons of hot asphalt
and keep vehicles moving, freeholder Ian Leonard said. This
spring, the county will move forward with its capital maintenance program to repave roadways, but in the interim the pothole patrol will put a patch over
any problematic areas.
County officials are asking residents to report any road hazards
they encounter to the Camden

MARCH 2531, 2015 THE CHERRY HILL SUN 9

A fairy tale, a royal throne and a ring

Jarod Gilman shares his elaborate proposal for his future wife, Jennifer
By JAROD GILMAN
Special to The Sun
I had driven that route so many
times, it was as routine as brushing my teeth. Yet somehow, that
alternate version of me, the one
whose nerves were tied together
tighter than a Boy Scouts slipknot, drove right past the exit for
my girlfriends house!
On any other night, a 20minute detour wouldve been
nothing more than a minor annoyance. But not on this night.
Not with my soon-to-be fiance
waiting patiently for my arrival
and my marriage proposal in
the form of a 40-page fairy tale
picture book that I had written
over a period of four months
staring at me from the passenger
seat as if to say, Bet youll back
out! No, this mishap felt more
like flubbing your lines in the
school play and then falling off
the stage for good measure!
Adding to the drama was the
reality that she knew I was coming to propose. Two months earlier, she had shown me the ring she
wanted. One month earlier, we
had planned for this particular
weekend to be a special weekend. And one week earlier, I had
asked for her fathers permission.
So, by the time I finally arrived at
her house, her feathers were just
as ruffled as mine. Still, I knocked
on the door, pretended everything
was normal, and told her I had
something to show her. Anticipating the ring, she cocked a teasing
half-smile and taunted, I dont
want to see it! To which I replied,
Oh yes you will and unceremoniously handed her the book. Her
half-smile quickly morphed into
bewilderment my plan was
working! To further combat her
mockery of the situation, I explained how hard I had worked
writing it and demanded that she
begin reading it while I attend to
the bathroom (often the first
room I visited in her house after
the hour and a half drive). Little
did she know, my purpose for visiting the John was not the usual
one.
The book was about a princess

JENNIFER AND JAROD GILMAN

who had a very hard time finding
a suitable prince. I cut out pictures from a Snow White picture
book for some added charm,
using Snow White for my fiance,
the seven dwarfs for the various
suitors who could not measure up
and Prince Charming for myself
(naturally). While in the bathroom, I hid the last page of the
book, on which Prince Charming
proposes to Snow White on bended knee, behind a radiator across
from the toilet.
The scene was set. There was

no turning back now. Back in her

bedroom, I waited patiently for
her to reach the missing last page.
At that point, I could have easily
one-upped her ribbing with a
drawn-out game of hot and
cold, except that she was too
strong-willed to accept such badgering and I was too invested in the
moment to let it linger. So, I directed her to the bathroom, asked
her to sit on her throne (suitable
only for a princess!), pulled out
the last page from behind the
working radiator (not realizing I
could have easily started a fire)
and nervously handed it to her.
As she read the words Will you
marry me? I quickly pulled out
the ring from my pocket, got
down on one knee and asked her
to marry me while she was still
sitting on the toilet!
As silly as the scene must have
looked, the thing that stood out
the most was how quickly she
said yes without even looking
at the ring. I knew then, and have
been further validated in the nine
years since, that all of our experiences in life, good, bad, and in-between, would be met with a mixture of love, loyalty, and laughter,
with a dash of irreverence sprinkled in.

grams and ideas the district
would pursue in the coming
years. This year, one of those
goals came to fruition as the district joined Sustainable Schools
for Jersey.
Braunstein credits Reusche for
having the drive to bring sustainability to the district.
It was really through her leadership and having that really be
her vision and have that be as an
inspiration, Braunstein said.
Reusche has also helped the
district forge a greater partnership with Cherry Hill Township.

Mayor Chuck Cahn came into office in 2012, just six month after
Reusche arrived. The two have
worked closely in the three-plus
years since.
"Dr. Reusche and I have built a
strong, positive relationship over
the course of the last three years,
and I know that we share similar
views on the importance of public education and investing in
Cherry Hills schools," Cahn said
in a statement. "I have always appreciated Dr. Reusches willingness to work together with the
township on so many issues, and I
wish her all the best in her new
position."
The board of education plans
to begin the search for a new superintendent immediately.

Celebration displays pride in Greek heritage

CELEBRATION
Continued from page 1
scheduled for March 22. It features more than a dozen Greek
Orthodox Churches from the
Philadelphia metro area. After
the parade, all of the church communities gather in Upper Darby,
Pa.
The Cherry Hill procession
holds a special place in Pratsinakis heart. As the church community marched, Pratsinakis
mentioned how he loves seeing
everyone come together. In addition to students from the afterschool program, a number of parents and other church members
came for the procession.

Fleisher speaks to the

Thomas Greek Orthodox
Church as Councilwoman
Carole Roskoph and Councilman Brian Bauerle look
on. Above, Argie Karapalios and Panayiota
Gerogious present the
banner. At right, Emmanuel Pratsinakis, pastor at St. Thomas Greek
Orthodox Church in Cherry Hill, speaks about
Greeces independence.

For a short time, everyone at

the municipal building was
Greek. Council president Dave
Fleisher gave the church a proclamation in honor of Greek Independence Day and spoke of how
so many discoveries and inventions throughout history originated from Greece.
At the end of the ceremony,
sixth-grade student Katerina
Poulathaz raised the Greek flag.
As the flag rose higher in the air,
the crowd began to sing the Greek
national anthem.
There was no mistaking where
this small community hailed
from.
Theyre very proud of their
heritage, theyre proud of their
lineage, Pratsinakis said.

Project timeline
is one concern
PROJECT
Continued from page 5

change since Februarys presentation. The school district and

township have decided to turf additional areas behind each football end zone.
We would turf everything inside of the track, Roth said.
Previously, turf was only to be
installed on the playing surface of
the football field. The extra turf
would increase the price to about
$1.1 million per field from the
original estimate of $725,000.
A number of board of education members expressed concerns about the proposal. Board
member Colleen Horiates had
concerns about how safe turf
would be for the athletes. During
the February presentation, athletics facilities committee member
Rich Stern said divots and uneven ground on the current grass
fields present more of an injury
risk than the turf field would.
Another concern was the timeline for the project. If the township and school district move forward with the project, construc-

tion would begin in the spring of

2016. The project would take five
to seven months to complete,
meaning both football teams may
not be able to play at their home
fields for the 2016 season.
Roth said the committee has
discussed a number of alternate
solutions. He said the teams
might be able to play at another
township field. He also said both
teams could possibly play an
away-only schedule for one season.
There were also questions
about the timeline for the district
to pay back its half of the cost. If
the turf is installed during 2016,
the school district would begin reimbursing the township beginning in the 2016-17 fiscal year. The
original proposal had the school
district paying its share of the
cost in three installments, though
Roth said the district is trying to
ask the township to extend it to
four installments.
School district administrators
will make a recommendation to
the board of education in the
near future prior to any decision
being made. The next strategic
planning committee meeting is
scheduled for March 31.
