Mt. Laurel BOE

approves tentative
budget at meeting
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Mt. Laurel residents could see
an increase in their local school
tax bill this year.
The Mt. Laurel School District
Board of Education approved the
tentative 2015-16 budget during a
special action portion of its work
session last week.
According to the preliminary
tax rate, residents with an average assessed home of $237,518
will see a tax increase of $42.75 in
their local school tax bill.
During the presentation, Superintendent Antoinette Rath
said the district's goal is to continue creating better schools
through curriculum and facility
enhancements.
This proposed budget builds
upon the foundation we've created over many years, Rath said.

Regional school taxes could

decrease for Mt. Laurel residents
LRHSD approves tentative budget at last weeks meeting
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Mt. Laurel residents could see
a small dip on their regional
school tax bill for this upcoming
year.
The Lenape Regional High
School District board of education unanimously approved the
district's tentative 2015-16 school
year budget at last week's meeting.
The tentative budget includes a
decrease of $26.89 for a Mt. Laurel

resident with the average assessed home of $237,518. The regional school tax rate decreased
1.29 cents per $100 of assessed
value.
The total budget is $154,058,531,
an increase of 1.4 percent from
last year. Most of the budget is
funded with taxpayer money,
with $114,362,944 expected to
come from taxpayers in the district's eight municipalities.
Details on the tentative budget
were not discussed at the meeting. The budget was passed so it

could be submitted to the Burlington County superintendent's office prior to March 20.
District officials plan to discuss
the budget in full during the public hearing, scheduled for
Wednesday, April 28 at the district
administration building in Shamong at 7:30 p.m.
In other news:
A pair of late winter snow
days on March 5 and 6 are having
an impact on the school calendar.

The total amount of the tentative budget is $71.8 million, a 1.19

percent increase from last year.
The district received $4.3 million
in state aid, the same amount it
received last year.
Included in the tentative budget are a number of materials to
particularly enhance the science
and technology programs. Money
is being allocated for STEM materials and supplies and to write
new curriculum standards for
science in grades six through
eight and technology for all
grades. The district is also planning to purchase additional
Chromebook carts and teacher
computers.

ALL NATURAL LOTIONS AND SCRUBS

- all natural lotions and scrubs for adults
- chemical free, natural lotions for babies
- homemade
- high quality ingredients
- chemical free
- great for your skin!

A number of capital improvements are also included in this

year's budget. Among them is a
roof project at Larchmont School,
changing from carpet to tile at
Springville School, HVAC control
upgrades at three schools and
phase two of the district's exterior lighting project.
Business administrator Robert
Wachter elaborated on one capital improvement during the work
session. The district could expand its solar panel project to the
elementary schools. Solar panels
were installed at Hartford School
and Harrington Middle School in
2010 and 2011 to help reduce the
carbon footprint.
Wachter said the panels could
potentially cost less than the ones
installed in the past.
It's about 50 percent of what
we paid in 2010, he said.
The tentative budget also includes the purchase of four new
school buses. Two would be 54passenger buses, one would hold
16 passengers and one would hold
24 passengers.
Rath said the district has tried
to continue bettering the school
facilities and programs while still
keeping in mind the tax impact
the budget has on Mt. Laurel residents.
We feel this is a safe, sound
budget, she said.
The tentative budget was sub-

mitted to the Burlington County

superintendent for review. The
second reading and public hearing on the budget is scheduled for
the board of education meeting

first month
Rath said the first month of
PARCC is wrapping up with few
issues in the school. Despite some
students refusing to take the test,
she said students taking the test
have been able to do so without
any disruption.
In February, the school district
announced students who refused
the test would be permitted to do
an alternate assignment. Students can also do an alternate assignment after completing the
test.
Rath said students refusing the
tests have not disrupted those
who were taking the assessment.
The school district hasn't experienced many issues from a technology standpoint either. Rath
said the district has not had any
major issue, and the district's
technology team has been on
hand to correct any minor issues.
March is when students take
the performance-based component of PARCC. Students will also
take an end-of-the-year component in May.

LRHSD Give to Goodwill

2015 drive is underway
LRHSD
Continued from page 5
Superintendent Carol Birnbohm said graduation is currently been pushed back to June 18 because the school calendar has
been extended to make up for the
snow days the district has had
this year.
We've had a total of four snow
days so far this year, Birnbohm
said.
Birnbohm noted the school
year could be pushed back further if the district uses additional
emergency days.
The snow days are also having
an effect on the board of education's meeting schedule. The
meeting scheduled for June 17
has been moved back one week to

Wednesday, June 24, to allow the

meeting to take place after the
end of the school year.
In what has become a
spring tradition, schools in the
Lenape District have begun their
fourth annual Give to Goodwill
drive for 2015.
Students, faculty and staff at
all four high schools are encouraged to donate gently-used clothing, accessories, toys, books and
other small household items and
place them into a donation bin located in each school's parking lot.
Since 2012, the district has collected 109,387 pounds of donations.
Through the drive's first two
weeks, Cherokee High School
jumped out to an early lead, having contributed 0.84 pounds of donations per student. Cherokee
has won all three of the past Give
to Goodwill drives. The competition runs through April 17.

mother for involvement
POLICE
Continued from page 2
Domestic violence is a terrible
scourge on our society. The result
in this case was the ultimate evil.
Kyle Crosby took the life of his
wife, the woman he pledged to
love and honor. We will seek justice for Erica, but that will never
erase the pain of her loss felt so
strongly by her family.
Crippens husband, Crosby,
was charged with murder in January in connection with her
death. Crippen lived with Crosby
on Aberdeen Drive in Mt. Laurel.
Together they had a 3-month-old
daughter, and also cared for Crippens 7-year-old daughter from a
previous relationship.
The investigation into Crippens death began on Jan. 7 after
Mt. Laurel school officials asked
Mt. Laurel Police to conduct a
wellness check at the familys
home when nobody came to pick
up the 7-year-old daughter. At that
time, Crosby signed a missing
person report that day indicating
he had not seen his wife since
Jan. 1. On Jan. 10, Crosby was
charged with endangering the
welfare of a child due to the poor
level of care he provided to the
children in his wifes absence.
Crosby was taken into custody
on the evening of Jan. 12 following a traffic stop and foot chase in
Bellmawr. In the trunk of the vehicle being driven by Crosby, investigators found several items
determined to have evidential
value in connection to her disap-

pearance. He was charged with

Crippens murder a day later.
Authorities believe Crosby
killed Crippen in the early morning hours of Dec. 31. The investigation revealed that Crosby had
traveled to Maryland between the
time that he disappeared from his
home and his arrest.
Three searches were conducted
in Maryland at different times by
investigators from the Burlington
County Prosecutors Office, the
Mt. Laurel Police Department,
the Maryland State Police, the
Maryland Department of Natural
Resources Police and the New
Jersey State Police.
A search was conducted on
March 17 following a forensic examination of the Global Positioning System found in Crosbys vehicle after he was taken into custody on Jan. 12. The GPS device
had recorded more than 8,600 coordinates. Investigators determined that Crosby had spent a
lengthy period of time in Carroll
County along Old Frederick
Road.
Crippen was discovered in that
area on March 17 at 12:12 p.m., approximately 85 feet from the roadway.
Jo Crosby, Kyles mother, 67,
from Gloucester Township, has
been charged with helping her
son conceal the death of Crippen.
She was released after posting 10
percent of $12,500 bail.
Additional details on the case
are still under investigation. Kyle
Crosby remains in the Burlington
County Jail on $1.2 million bail.
Mt. Laurel Police Chief Dennis
Cribben said returning Crippen

to her family had been his departments top priority.

Id like to thank the Mt. Laurel
community for all of their support during this difficult investigation, Cribben said. I appreciate the extreme commitment of
the police officers and detectives
who worked endless hours to
bring this investigation to a successful conclusion. Everyone concerned can be assured justice will
be served to Kyle Crosby for this
horrible crime that needlessly left
two children without a mother.
