Problem 1 : A C-D nozzle is designed to operate isentropically with an exit
mach number of 1.5 from attached supplied reservoir of pressure and temperature
as 500kPa and 400k respectively. The nozzle throat area is 5cm2 . Assume air as
perfect gas with = 1.4 and R =287 J/kg/K.
(a) Determine the ratio of exit area to throat area.
(b) Given the area ratio in part(a), find the range of back pressure over which the
nozzle is chocked.
(c) Determine the mass flow rate for the back pressure of 450 kPa
(d) Determine the mass flow rate for the back pressure of 0 kPa.
Problem 2 : A piston in a tube is suddenly accelerated to a constant velocity
of 50 m/s, which causes a normal shock to move into the air at rest in the tube.
Several seconds later the piston is suddenly accelerated from 50 to 100 m/s, which
causes a second shock to move down the tube. Calculate the velocities of the two
shocks if the temperature of the air ( = 1.4 and R =287 J/kg/K ) at rest is 300k.
Problem 3 : When the shock is Mach wave( = sin1 (1/M) ) then the flow is not
deflected, even when the shock angle is 90 degree still the flow is not deflected and
have same upstream direction. What can be the oblique shock angle for which
we can have maximum deflection of the flow for given R, . Also find the maximum
deflection angle for the limiting case of M1 = to M2 = 1 across oblique shock
wave.

Problem 6 : Symmetrical thin airfoil theory has been modeled by clockwise
vortex distribution of strength(x) per unit length along the airfoil chord line. Assume that the chord line of the airfoil is parellel to freestream U in incompressible
flow. Prove that the coefficient of pressure at any x on the chord line of the airfoil
