Foundation was doing.
He also spoke on how everyone in
Canada can participate in this common forum to connect, promote and
do business with Bihar. Speaking on
the occasion, Mr.Jha said, We decided to celebrate Bihar centenary with
holi, because we apply gulal to each
other as ultimate expression of joy and
combining both is Bihari way to
express the joy and enthusiasm of
NRBs over 100 years of the state formation.
Dr.Das thanked Bihar Foundation for
encouraging NRBs to celebrate the

Despite encouraging growth
rate, National Sample Survey
shows no decline in poverty in
Bihar. The present growth scenario is mainly due to public
sector investments. Considering
this as an opportunity, one of
the most recognised faces of the
corporate world, Mr Kumar
Mangalam Birla announced the
plan of his Aditya Birla Group
to invest Rs. 500 crore in a
cement unit in Bihar.
He said, "Till the time things improve, it would be unrealistic to pursue heavy industries. Thus, focus should be on light
engineering, low capital and low power intensive industries, agro
equipment and food processing units."
He stressed on skill upgradation through private investments
in educational and vocational institutes, providing support to
agro-based industries and improving food security infrastructure
for linking rural and urban areas. "I believe, there are others like
us who are thinking of investments in the state on the basis of
own captive power plants. Despite issues like energy efficiency,
Bihar has been able to shortlist itself in the possible investment
destination s of every industrialist" he said.

Inviting Nepal's PM to open the summit is

organisers of the three-day summit. The PM
confidently said: "I am sure the delebrations
will benefit Bihar, but what you discuss here
will also be useful for us across the border."
One of the most important issue discussed
during the summit was flood and river. Large
expanse of farmland in Bihar get flooded by

Patna is on the
threshold
of
becoming one of the countrys favoured
destinations for technical education.
Thanks to these technical institutions, the state is now in a position to
produce a large number of technocrats,
thus reducing the migration of students
to other states.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-P)
being the topmost institute has now
opened doors for students in Bihar.
The IIT-P, with its campus at
Patliputra, has also hired the building of
Software Technology Park of India
(STPI), Patna, adjacent to the institute,
where it has well-furnished labs, classrooms to teach electronics, computer
science, physics and mathematics. The
institute has also state-of-the-art faculty
chambers.
Apart from IIT, NIT is also doing
well. Earlier known as Bihar College of
Engineering, it was renamed as NIT-P in
the year 2004. It is the 18th NIT centre
to come into existence in the country.
The institute marked its beginning with a
good strength of 283 students.
The performance of NIT-P can be
seen by the increasing percentage of
placements with the
passing of each
year. Some of the
countrys core public and private sector companies, such as NTPC, BHEL,
Infosys, TCS, and HCL have started
coming for placements.
Mr Zeeshan Ahmed, a second year
student of computer science (CS) said,
I am very proud to be a part of NIT-P
and glad that such an institute has come
up in Patna.
Birla Institute of Technology, Patna
a deemed university, which was started
in 2006, has now the strength of 1200
students. Facilitating the students with
modern technologies it has ensured
placement for students in top multinational companies , with an average package of 4.5 lakh. Deputy Director, BITP, Mr S P Lal said, We are one of the
fastest growing institutes in Patna, providing 95 per cent placement.
Students from BIT-P have shown
their mettle at Lunabotics Mining
Competition organised by the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration
(NASA).The 80-kg robot, developed by
a nine-member team of BIT-P, was
judged the best among 36 participants
from 13 countries across the globe.
In another development, the state government has decided to transfer all the
seven government engineering colleges of
the state from their existing universities to
Aryabhatta Knowledge University (AKU)
for affiliation.
This shows that
these institutes, in
due course of time,
will make an indelible mark in the
field of technical
education and research in Bihar.

Ranjan, an IIT- Roorkee student, said:
The pressure to perform well, hectic

their lives.
The number of suicide cases has gone

National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB)

but later it realised that Naxalism is a bigger threat
to the country than cross-border terrorism.
In a bid to check Naxal offensive in the
country, the Centre launched Operation

Union home ministry, the operation got a
fillip with paramilitary forces flushing out

The operation was first started in

Verma was suspended in connection with
a disproportionate assets case.
The major steps taken to curb corruption
include introduction of a new Lokayukta
Bill in the state. The post of chief minister,
speaker of legislative assembly, chairman of
legislative council and government employees, were brought under its ambit.
Apart from dealing with corruption, Mr
Kumar also initiated measures to solve
perennial power crisis in the state.
Companies like India Power Corporation
Ltd, Kolkata and Nalanda Power Company
Ltd, Kolkata have come up with offers to set
up their plants in the state. While India
Power Corporation Ltd is keen to set up a
1,320 MW plant in East Champaran,
Nalanda Power Company Ltd has evinced
interest in establishing a 2000 MW plant at
south Pirpainti in Bhagalpur district. A
1,320 MW thermal power plant of Pirpainti
Bijlee Company Pvt. Ltd. is likely to be set
up at Pirpainti in Bhagalpur district. But the
biggest problem is that none of these projects are likely to operate before 2014-15.
This is hard to ignore that Mr Kumar has
done a lot of work in his second term. But
some loopholes are still visible. Law and
order has been deteriorating in the state.
The website of Bihar police shows that in
the year 2005, the number of criminal cases
were 1,04,781, but it went up to 1,37,572 in
2010.
In terms of agriculture and industry, the
state is lagging behind. There is a debt of Rs
57,000 crore and Rs 664 crore on the state.
The Forbesganj case in which police
fired on a mob of villagers at Bhanjanpura,
killing four persons, including a pregnant
woman and a 10-month-old infant, exposed
the brutality of the Bihar police. The government should come up with a mechanism
to check police highhandedness in the state.

explore more and more its Singapore! One of the icons
representing Singapore is Merlion Park. It is located near
Marina Bay Island. What makes this park a popular tourist
attraction is the two structures of the Merlion which are
located here. Other than a tourist attraction, its a major
landmark of Singapore. The Merlion is a mythical creature
with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. Its used as a
mascot of Singapore. The fish body represents Singapores
origin as a fishing village. The lion head represents
Singapores original name-SINGAPURA meaning lion

Obituary
Komal Kashyap
She was like a blooming flower,
spreading her fragrance around,
but destiny had a different plan
for her.
Komal Kashyap, a second
year student of Department of
Mass Communication, Patna
Womens College, was an
enthusiastic budding journalist,
whose sad and untimely demise
on October 10, 2011, left everyone in a state of profound grief. Her intelligence, smart persona and
courage had made her popular among teachers and
friends. She had all the qualities of a good journalist.
Kashyap had a balance in her life, because she had
charm of a kid and she knew of her responsibilities.
She was equally competent in other fields, as she was a
good singer, a good anchor at Bihar News and a good
journalist as she got eight bylines during her training
period at Hindustan Times, Patna.
If Kashyaps friends and family members are to be
believed, a wrong diagnosis led to her death. Her
untimely demise was a great loss for the college.
