DISCUSSION NOTE

Recommendations for renewal

Few words and a Lot of Actions
This document gives an overview of the policy recommendations developed by the participants of
the EYC study session A Preventive Approach in Human Rights Education.
Education. As a next step the
members of the Administrative Body should assess which of the recommendations can be included in
the development process of the renewed Few words and a lot of action. Next to this it should
decide on how to deal with the recommendations
recommendations which are not related to our educational policy,
but more to other policy documents (representation, training, rules and regulations, ...).
We divided the recommendations into 5 categories

General recommendations towards the network: strategic decisions

We recommend DBYN to promote active citizenship in order to initiate social change to

contribute to a stronger human rights culture.

In order to make peace education a relevant and important aspect of HRE within DBYN, we
recommend that the DBYN A.B. makes peace education a working topic for DBYN and its
member organisations and includes the topic in future strategy by creating working groups.

In order to send a positive signal as regards to controversial issues surrounding HR, we

recommend that thee DBYN A.B. try to achieve a common approach to controversial issues
(LGBTI, gender, other religions) by consulting other representatives of member organisations at
the A.B. meeting.

In order to remain true/loyal to our Salesian identity we recommend that

that DBYN looks to our
history and our founders work when choosing our priorities on HR issues. This shall be
formalized in writing a policy paper and tools for trainers & facilitators.

General recommendations towards the network: new working

structures

DBYN should create a working group to improve the learning for dimension through the
following steps
o Find basic ground text (research).
o Decide on DBYN's position
o If yes, establish training activities and opportunities for empowering volunteers

In order to encourage DBYN organisations to work with COMPASS we recommend the DBYN
A.B. to create working groups to analyse COMPASS to see if there is an important section
missing, with the outcome of creating new working tolls if necessary.

DISCUSSION NOTE: recommendation FW&LA

General recommendations
commendations towards the network: new tools

DBYN should coordinate the creation of a toolbox for HRE to provide easier access to HR
materials from internal and external sources. DBYN should also provide links to resources to
complement Few words and a lot of action (button on the website).

In order to support member organisations to apply HRE in their working practice we

recommend that DBYN establishes a set of criteria on working through HR by developing a
self assessment tool.

General recommendations
recommendations towards the network: new activities /
development of existing activities

We recommend DBYN to develop a strategy on active dissemination of results and concrete

actions on both organisational and participants level, in order to strengthen them in actively
ac
spreading values and human rights. This can be done through organising seminars for trainers
and member representatives (brainstorming, good practices, plan of action).

In order to make members of DBYN active defenders and promoters of HR, we recommend
reco
that the DBYN A.B. and pool of trainers include education for HR (activism) by having a session
for advocacy in each DBYN training session.

Recommendations towards Few words and a lot of action

DBYN should concretise/make explicit the language links between HRE within Few words and a
lot of action, by:
o Establishing a working group of this study session to work on it.
o Paying special attention to participation within DBYN & MOs.
o Dedicating one specific chapter to HR(E) in Few words and a lot of action.

In order to explicitly state the similarity between DBY oratory criterion and the approaches of
HRE we recommend DBYN in Few words and a lot of action integrates this more clearly and
implements it in the activity.

We recommend implementing the terms human rights and dignity in the chapter 21st century, a
new context in Few words and a lot of action because Human Rights are part of the 21st
century society.

We recommend to add the term holistic growth/learning in the chapter Oratory criterion in
Few words and a lot of action to make human rights education explicit.

In order to speak a common language and present ourselves (DBYN) as an organisation that
works with Human Rights we recommend that
th the DBYN A.B. explicitly includes human rights
in Few words and a lot of action by having a consultation meeting and including HR when
working on a new version of Few words and a lot of action, more specifically in the partners
regarding the 21st century
entury and active citizenship for HR.

DISCUSSION NOTE: recommendation FW&LA

In order to build a common language we recommend to define a clear and practical definition of
our core values by initiating a long term online consultation within the member organisations
structured by the A.B.s, and
d integrate it in the Few words and a lot of action.

Recommendation towards the Pool of Trainers and the Pool of

Salesian Chaplains

In order to express our Christian identity we recommend that the pool of Salesian Chaplains and
the pool of trainers develop
velop a booklet or toolkit about the link between spirituality/Christian
values and HR. In order to protect and promote human life and human dignity since its
beginning we recommend the Salesian Chaplains and trainers to include in the booklet reflections
reflection
about this value.

In order to mainstream minority issues we recommend that the pool of DBYN trainers organise
living libraries in DBYN training sessions by having people that represent different minorities at
every DBYN session.

Recommendations towards
toward Member Organisations

In order to equip the young people that our member organisations reach with the knowledge to
defend their rights, we suggest that our member organisations ensure the inclusion of education
about HR by nominating a HR ambassador as a focal point in each organisation and mapping out
MOs activities in advance.
