The advantages and disadvantages goverment of education change

STPM system from terminal system to moduler system.

Form 6 or officially known as the Malaysian Higher School Certificate (HSC)

or we known as a Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) is a pre-university
program that is taught in secondary schools throughout Malaysia. The program is
administered by the Malaysian Examinations Council (MPM) and takes one and a
half years to complete the syllabus. Form 6 follows the modular system. It is not a
final exam at the end of this program, students will sit for three time of
examination exam and it makes the course easier than ever before. Examination
date is on November-December of the following year. However, the changing of
STPM system from terminal system to modular system have its own advantages
and disadvantages to students. There are a few of advantages and disadvantages
such as to improve their final examination result, less curriculum, to ensure the
student on focusing more in their studies, limited time in examination and in
learnig the syllabus.
One of the advantages the new STPM system, students can improve their
final examination results. The student is allowed to improve their results in the
final examination of Division 1 and Division 2 with a re-sit the final examination at
the end of Division 3 (end of year). Students who do not achieve good results for
the Division 3 also can re-sit the final examination after the final result division 3
have been released. Therefore, students have the opportunity to get better
results because it calculate the best one form overall results examination from
each division. Students can improve their result until they feel satisfied.
Compared to that the terminal STPM system where students only can repeat
exam after the final result released in the end of the year.

Through this system, the cost for students to learn curriculum content is
low and they have greater opportunities to obtain better results for each term the
scope of study which assessed in each term is on a small scale. Introduction to
the Pendidikan Berasaskan Sekolah(PBS) in this system is in line with the MOE to
develop a balanced human capital in terms of physical, emotional, spiritual, and
intellectual as well as expand educational opportunities for all potential. It is also
coincidentally with the desire to strengthen KPM assessment and evaluation

system to be more holistic, with emphasis on outcomes-based education

students are more focused and not too exam-oriented.

However, there are some disadvantages of STPM modular system, that it

is based on the syllabus learning can not be completed in one session. Because
of time in provisions for one term is too short. This happens because the syllabus
that the student have to learn is to long but it has a very limited time to study.
Thats why, the changing of the system will have an impact on students during
the examination time. Lastly, it will have an adverse impact on the results of the
students.

Apart from that, the period of time examination each subject is too short
and limited. Through a system based on student opinion STPM modular, they told
that the time allotted to answer the final examination is not sufficient either. This
is because they have to answer too many subjective within 2 to 3 hours. By doing
so, it cause them to have not enough time to answer all the questions in the
report within a short period, let alone for making the revised answer. In fact,
problems like this will cause students to get emotional when taking examinations
and not able to answer questions very well in the final examinations.

In conclusion, a new system of STPM have bring advantages and

disadvantages to student form 6. However, the weaknesses of this system should
have some effort to overcome. Ministary of education have done some analysis
about the new system and ask student the problem that their have encountered
or ministary of education should use the education base on learning that use in
universty in STPM.
