Manyofusunderstandthecriticalroleofapositiveadultmentorduringformativeyoungyears.KarelyDuran,
2014BattleMountainHighSchoolgraduate,struggledtonarrowherlist.Whileherparentsandsiblingshave
inspiredDuranthroughtheirstrongworkethicandcommitmenttofamily,LeeJonesandBratzoHorruitinerof
VailValleyFoundation'sYouthFoundationbecamementorsforDuranduringherformativechildhoodyearsdue
totheirfriendly,helpfulandmotivatingnature.Then,inpedaledBrettandTamaraDonelson,whoDuranworked
withthroughEllsAngelsmountainbikingprogram."Notonlydidtheyshowmehowbeautifulandfulfilling
mountainbikingwas,buttheirpersonalbackgroundinspiredmetowanttoplayaveryimportantroleinmy
householdasIgrowup."Inaneducationalsetting,aparticularhighschoolEnglishteacher,Ms.Goolsby,enabled
Durantohelpotherstudentsthroughcourseassignmentsandlanguagesupportamajorsteppingstoneforthe
teen.Morerecently,Doctor'sPlus'sJillKovacevichhasinspiredDuranprofessionally,exposinghertorealitiesof
navigatingthehealthcaresystem.

Whilethisrobustlistofpositiveadultrolemodelsmightseemstrongenoughtoofferanyyoungpersonan
advantage,Duranencounteredhershareofstrugglesandfoundsupportinpeersinsteadofadultswhenitcameto
hermostnotablechallenges.Shesharesofexperiencesasabullyingvictimformostofherchildhoodand
adolescence."Adultsdidn'treallyinfluencemeIneverreallyfeltlikeIcouldtalktothemaboutmyreal
struggles.Ineededtobearoundolderpeerstofeelsafer."EnterTheYouthFoundation.Duranreceivedsoccer
coachingandacademictutoringinanenvironmentthatintegratedconflictresolution,dealingwithloss,and"kept
thedramaout."Withteammatescommittedtoworkingoutconflictsinthelockerroom,theydevelopedintoa
strongteamofsoccerplayersandlifelongfriends.TheleadershipofolderpeersinfluencedDuranmore
profoundlythananyadults.
