The Desire of Ages, p.83

It would be well for us to spend a thoughtful hour each day in
contemplation of the life of Christ. We should take it point by
point, and let the imagination grasp each scene, especially the
closing ones. As we thus dwell upon His great sacrifice for us, our
confidence in Him will be more constant, our love will be
quickened, and we shall be more deeply imbued with His spirit. If
we would be saved at last, we must learn the lesson of penitence
and humiliation at the foot of the cross. (DA 83.4)

What is humility?

Definition
Humility is freedom from pride and arrogance; humbleness of mind;
a modest estimate of ones own worth. In theology, humility
consists in lowliness of mind; a deep sense of ones own
unworthiness in the sight of God, self-abasement, penitence for sin,
and submission to the divine will.
Example
Jesus (Philippians 2:5-8).
Paul (Acts 20:18-19).

Jesus invites us to this study.

Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I
am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your
souls.

So as to commune with God.

Isaiah 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that
inhabiteth eternity, whose name [is] Holy; I dwell in the high
and holy [place], with him also [that is] of a contrite and
humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive
the heart of the contrite ones.

So as to receive grace.
1 Peter 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the
elder. Yea, all [of you] be subject one to another, and be
clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth
grace to the humble.

2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name,
shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn
from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will
forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
Humility is the foundation around which other graces are
clustered.
It is the attitude with which we receive Gods Word.
James 1:21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of
naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word,
which is able to save your souls.

The prerequisite for understanding and appreciating the

humility of Jesus is a thorough understanding of the Holy
Trinity.
It has been said that the The mind is a measure of a man.
Philippians 2:5-8
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who,
being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with
God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the
form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being
found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became
obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Hebrews 1 tells us about the Divinity of Jesus, on the other
hand, Hebrews 2 tells us of the humanity of Jesus.
Hebrews 1:8 But unto the Son [he saith], Thy throne, O God,
[is] for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness [is] the
sceptre of thy kingdom.
God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are
Three equal co-eternal Persons.

Conclusion

He made Himself of no reputation

HE EMPTIED HIMSELF
It was His voluntary choice.
John 10:17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay
down my life, that I might take it again.
All the while when Jesus was on earth,
He was 100% God and 100% human. His divine prerogatives
were within His reach.
The greatest temptation He had was to depend on His divinity.
John 5:30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I
judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own
will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

In the likeness of men

He was 100% human.
Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of
flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the
same; that through death he might destroy him that had the
power of death, that is, the devil...
He depended entirely on the Father as any man does.
Hebrews 5:7-8 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had
offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and
tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was
heard in that he feared; Though he were a Son, yet learned he
obedience by the things which he suffered...

Jesus: a humble servant

The glory of Christ is that He came to serve.

John 13:3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things
into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to
God; He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and
took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water
into a basin, and began to wash the disciples feet, and to
wipe [them] with the towel wherewith he was girded.
Jesus demonstrated His love in foot washing.
John 13:1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus
knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this
world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the
world, he loved them unto the end.
True humility is seen not in how many people serve you but in
how many you serve. (John 10:15)

The life of Jesus: a Paragon of humility

Humble unto death, even the second death

Humble in the face of death

The Saviour could not see through the portals of the tomb.
Hope did not present to Him His coming forth from the grave
a conqueror, or tell Him of the Fathers acceptance of the
sacrifice. He feared that sin was so offensive to God that Their
separation was to be eternal. Christ felt the anguish which the
sinner will feel when mercy shall no longer plead for the guilty
race. It was the sense of sin, bringing the Fathers wrath upon
Him as mans substitute, that made the cup He drank so
bitter, and broke the heart of the Son of God. DA 753.2
John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he
said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the
ghost.

RH, July 5, 1887 par. 9
In consideration of this, can men have one particle of exaltation?
As they trace down the life and sufferings and humiliation of
Christ, can they lift their proud heads as though they were to bear
no trials, no shame, no humiliation? I say to the followers of Christ,
Look to Calvary, and blush for shame your self-important ideas. All
this humiliation of the Majesty of heaven was for guilty, condemned
man. He went lower and lower in his humiliation, until there were
no lower depths that he could reach in order to lift man up from
his moral defilement. All this was for you who are striving for the
supremacystriving for human praise, for human exaltation; you
who are afraid you will not receive all that deference, that respect
from human minds, that you think is your due. Is this Christ-like?
