Meet The Band : Tigercats

Times just
right for a
UK return

SIXTIES LEGEND:
Billy J Kramer
IT WAS just a matter of the
right time, the right place and
things lining up with my schedule, Billy J Kramer recently
told Andy Howells, as they
talked about his return to the
UK to perform his first concerts in 18 years.
The original Merseybeat era
star, who now resides in the
USA, explains why he hadnt
toured the UK for so long: I did
a lot of touring and I thought it
was best to leave it off. I didnt
want to do one tour after another as I thought people would get
fed up with me!
Billy couldnt be any more
wrong as he discovered recently when performing to appreciative fans at several Beatles
Fests in the USA.
Billy plays St Davids Hall as
part of the Solid Silver Sixties
Show on April 1. Call 029 2087
8444 for details.

Rockney
duo return
CHAS & Dave are back in
Wales, bringing their On The
Road tour to Swanseas Grand
Theatre on April 2.
Chas & Dave first arrived on
the music scene in the 70s,
with hits such as Gertcha and
Rabbit. The show features all
the classics, plus songs from
their new On the Road album.
It saw Chas and Dave not only
return to the UK album charts,
but also return to their roots
with a collection of early R&B,
skiffle and rock n roll classics
alongside new takes on songs
of their own.

MYSTERIOUS: Tigercats
TIGERCATS will be taking part in Wales Go
Pop! Festival in Cardiff on April 4.
The band teamed up with director
Thomas James (Fat White Family, Taman
Shud) of Black Teeth Productions to bring
out the dark side of their songwriting in
the new video for their single, Sleeping in
the Backseat. A ride in the country takes
a nightmarish turn in this slickly brutal
homage to 1960s British horror films, with
murderous consequences.
Known for their bright and lively DIY
promos for previous singles Full Moon
Reggae Party and Junior Champion, the
darkly mysterious tone is as much a departure as the mature sound of new album Mysteries, out now on Fortuna Pop!,
and reveals a new side to the band.

Wu-Tang Clan A Better

Twist

Its difficult to keep track of

the amount of musical styles
being used throughout this
record. Dub is fairly constant
but is fused with soul, jazz,
reggae, hip-hop, samba and
even turntablism. Despite the
wide range of sounds, this record flows seamlessly from
track to track without ever
feeling crowded or disjointed. A blend of Bonobo and
De-Phazz springs to mind.
This is an example of making a record to be listened to
in its entirety, with the bass
turned right up. A fantastic
debut effort.

lose the ability to put out good

your face in equal measure,
this record is classic Wu-Tang

is a staple. While this newest album doesnt have quite
the same funk as tracks like

ANDY HOWELLS chats to Dean Elliott about his tribute show to Simon & Garfunkel

Feeling groovy with duo

Interview
ITS been 50 years since the
most successful folk-rock duo
of all time Simon & Garfunkel recorded their first US number one
single The Sound of Silence. Following its West End success at
the Leicester Square Theatre, in
February 2015, The Simon and
Garfunkel Story is currently the
biggest and the most successful
touring theatre show celebrating
the lives and career of the duo.
Featuring seasoned West End,
award-winning leading man
Dean Elliott (Buddy Holly in
Buddy - The Musical) and a full
cast of talented actor-musicians,
The Simon and Garfunkel Story
takes you to the groovy times of
the 1960s. It tells the story of
both Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel from their humble beginnings
as rock and roll duo Tom and
Jerry, right through their massive success, dramatic breakup and reformation at the 1981
Central Park concert.
Using a huge projection
screen, the show features photos and film footage whilst a full
live band perform all their hits,
including Mrs Robinson, Cecilia, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Homeward Bound, Sound
of Silence and many more.
Andy Howells recently put
questions to Dean who plays
Paul Simon in the stage show.
What inspired you to put The
Simon & Garfunkel story
together?
I wanted to do something a
little bit like Buddy but tell an
unanswered story of rock and
roll and their story is fascinating.
We also wanted to take people
through a journey through the
1960s which we can with our full
cast and video projections. Also,
I think their music is incredible
and its a pleasure to immerse
myself in their songs.

His first solo album in 24
years Sweet Soulful Music was
released late in 2007 followed
by The Very Best Of Andy Fairweather Low in June 2008.
Andy and his tour band The
Low Riders released Zone O

lent portrayal of Buddy Holly.

Whats it been like stepping
from the shoes of one music
legend to another?
Its been a joy to play two of my
musical heroes (Paul Simon and
Buddy Holly) on tour, around the
world and in the West End. A
dream come true!

Some of the later stuff is difficult as Simon & Garfunkel spent

a lot of time in the studio playing
with sounds and instrumentation
which would be impossible without about 40 people on stage!
We quite often use their live arrangements so keeping within
the detail they are famous for.

How has the show been

received in the West End?
Incredible. It was a sell out and
we were so nervous but the audience were with us right from
the off and the whole experience
was such a warm and positive
one.

Which songs go down particularly well with the audience?

Cecilia and The Boxer get
everyone going but Bridge Over
Troubled Water really hits the
spot with a lot of our audience.
Not only is it sung beautifully by
our Art but it can be a very personal song for many people and
bring back a lot of memories for

Were there any songs which

What are your favourite

moments of the show?
Both Bridge and The Boxer

moments of the show is where
the band leave the stage, leaving myself and Art and we play
some early songs, just one guitar and two voices in perfect
harmony.

inviting him to see the show?

Yes. He is aware of our tour so
fingers crossed he will come.
Whats your favourite Simon
and Garfunkel track and why?
The Dangling Conversation.
Paul Simon once said this was
his masterpiece and I can see
why. It gets me every time.
Can you sum up the show in
one sentence?
A West End show full of nostalgia and memories and featuring some of the best songs ever
written.

What would you order down

What records would you buy in

Ones that dont break easily, so
that me and Sweep can play Frisbee down Cardiff Bay.
Have you heard of Pobol y

Oui sil vous plait.
Will you be replacing custard
pies with Bara Brith for the
Cardiff shows?
Its a good idea, but I think I
will stick to custard pies. Theyre
much messier.
What is better Torchwood or
Doctor Who?
I quite like Doctor Who, but I
think Torchwood is too grown-up
for teddy bears.
What Tom Jones tracks do you

The Young New Mexican Puppeteer and Golden Days.

I was cheering for England, but
I dont think anyone could hear

Whats your secret to staying
so young?
I recommend good fabric softener, and magical teddy bear
powers.
What would be your policies if
you were Prime Minister?
I would campaign for magic
classes to be introduced into the
National Curriculum. I would also
have free honey on demand for
all teddy bears.
What are your backstage
demands when on tour?

I like there to be plenty of water

available, just in case I need to
refill my water pistol.
Whats your most embarrassing moment on stage?
When Richards stool broke
and he sat on it. That was very
embarrassing (for him).
What is your best magic trick?
The one where I make a pot
plant appear on Richards head.
Could you beat Sweep in a
water pistol fight?
Yes. I would distract him with
sausages, and then move in for
the soaking.
What do you do to unwind after
a busy tour?
I like to take long baths with
lots of bubbles for me to splash
around.

What have you got planned for

the Cardiff shows?
I dont want to give too much
away, but there will be lots of
magical mayhem, singing, dancing, and smelly socks!

Season 2015 is a series of workshops and
talks that provide an opportunity to examine our expectations of the healthcare profession, to share responsibility
for its evolution, and to enrich the ways
in which we think about and experience

No previous arts or performance experience is required, and events are open to
those interested in health, medical education, and arts.
The workshops continue on April 11,
at The Preseli Room, Wales Millennium

In this workshop legendary performer
Peggy Shaw describes how her recent

her experiences of being in touch with
her own body and by having a stroke.
Through a series of creative writing exercises participants will find the weird

TAYO Alukos one-man play

Call Mr Robeson will shortly
return to Newport Riverfront
as part of its UK tour.
Tayo looks at the life and work
of world famous actor, singer
and civil rights campaigner
Paul Robeson, one of the 20th
centurys most impressive but
overlooked figures in this tourde-force performance.
The play follows Robesons
life as he is branded a traitor,
harassed, and denied chances
to perform or travel.
This rollercoaster journey
through Robesons life highlights how his radical activism
caused him to be disowned and
disremembered, even by the
leaders and descendants of the
civil rights movement.
It features much fiery oratory
and some of his famous songs,
including Ol Man River.
Aluko describes the show as
a one-man play about Paul
Robeson, complete with his
songs, his politics, his trials,
tribulations and triumphs. A
play that seeks to put him up
there where he belongs with
the very best of humanity.

CINEMA WORLD
SEVENTH SON (12A)

JEFF Bridges plays Master

John Gregory, the last remaining knight of a noble
and mystical order called
the Spooks, who defend humanity by containing the
creatures of the dark. He
imprisons a powerful witch
called Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore) but the rise
of a Blood Moon empowers the diabolical hag, who
transforms into a dragon
and escapes. Gregory and
his apprentice Billy Bradley
(Kit Harington) attempt to
contain the witch but their
heroic efforts culminate in
tragedy.
As Malkins powers grow,
Gregory visits the home of
Malcolm and Mam Ward
(Timothy Webber, Olivia
Williams) and offers the parents a small fortune to train
their boy Tom (Ben Barnes)
the seventh son of a seventh
son as his new apprentice.
The Wards agree. The young
man begins his tutelage in
earnest, aided by Gregorys
troll-like friend Tusk (John
DeSantis). Meanwhile, Malkin despatches her niece,
Alice (Alicia Vikander), to
spy on the Spook and his
protegee as she gathers her
most-trusted allies including fierce lieutenant Urag
(Jason Scott Lee) and bladewielding warlock Radu (Djimon Hounsou).

Unexpected twists around every corner

IF LIKE me, you missed The Drop
when it originally hit cinema
screens last year, then this is your
chance to finally catch this gritty
crime drama on DVD and Blu-ray.
The story follows Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy) an apparent underdog lonely bartender at Cousin
Marvs a neighbourhood bar
in Brooklyn. Bobs cousin, the
eponymous Marv (James Gandolfini in his last completed film
role), runs the business as a drop
bar, laundering money through a
covert scheme of funnelling cash
to local gangsters. Under Marvs
heavy hand, Bob finds himself
at the centre of a robbery gone
awry when money intended for a
Chechen gang is stolen from the
bar by masked gunmen. The robbery is investigated by cynical
police officer Detective Torres
(John Ortiz) and while Bob tries
to forge a relationship with his
neighbour Nadia (Noomi Rapace)
he finds himself entwined in an

DVD Review:
The Drop
investigation that digs deep into
the neighbourhoods past where
friends, families, and foes all work
together to make a living no matter the cost.
The big pull for The Drop is undoubtedly the multi-layered characterisations within the film. No
character should ever be taken at
face value and there are surprises
on every level right through to the
final moments. Undoubtedly Tom
Hardy and the late James Gandolfini are brilliantly cast in the
lead roles but there are also strong
performances from Noomi Rapace
and Matthias Schoenaerts, the
latter portraying a ticking time
bomb of menace with an air of
mystery.
The Drop is available on Blu-ray,

In The Spotlight

By
GERAINT
DAVIES

Competing keeps brass

players up to their best
WHEN it comes to musical influences, there is no doubt in
my mind that it is the music
of ones youth, more than any
other, that leaves the biggest
mark.
I remember Welsh hymns,
my fathers stentorian bass
singing Verdi and Schubert
as I stumbled my way through
the accompaniments, the pop
music of the time, scratchy
records that introduced me to
the recordings of the Classics
that have remained with me
ever since.
The other sound that most
impacted on my psyche was
that of the local brass band in
which I struggled to play third
cornet and probably made little contribution. But I loved it
and continue to do so.
Even nowadays,long after
my last practical involvement,
I still keep abreast of developments in the field usually

via the excellent local website

4barsrest
It is a bit like following the
football results at times, especially at this time of year
when the respective bands
compete and hope to qualify
for the National finals which
are held annually at the Royal
Albert Hall in October.
Contesting is at the heart
of the genre and it has its
own pyramid system (much
like football,) as bands vie to
move up through the sections
fourth to third to second and
so forth up to the big boys
in the championship section,
who compete to be at the tip of
that pyramid, and then on to
the European Championships.
As I have often reported,
Wales currently heads the
world with Philip Harpers
Cory Band, and Ian Porthouses Tredegar Band not far
behind as world number 3.

There was much local success at the Wales Regionals

at the Brangwyn Hall on Saturday, with Gareth Ritters
Ebbw Valley Brass winners
of the second section - going
from strength to strength. Abertillery Youth and District
and Usk bands will also be celebrating, after their qualification in the fourth section.
Many from outside the band
world will probably look at all
this with a slightly puzzled
expression. When did music
become a competitive sport?
Does all this sound and fury
signify anything?
Among all these test pieces
(created specifically for putting bands through their paces
) is there anything of any lasting musical worth?
Great composers such as
Holst and Vaughan Williams
were drawn to the medium
and Elgars Severn Suite is

still regularly performed.

However, much brass band
repertoire has not stood the
test of time.
Interestingly, most choirs
have tended to move away
from competing. I suppose
this is understandable, as
there is often more to be lost
than gained from the experience weeks or months can be
spent preparing for an event
that brings euphoria for few
and big anti-climax for the
majority.
Personally, I feel that it is a
pity as it has led to a drop in
standards for many, as rigour
and attention to detail become
less critical. Complacency can
all too easily set in. The brass
band fraternity will argue that
it is the striving for excellence
that ensures the maintenance
of high standards and, at the
top end, produces some worldclass music-making.

Cerys returns
to ballet show
CRITICS Circle Award winning company, Ballet Cymru
will present an extraordinary
double bill of new work at the

Ballet Cymru will follow TIR
by teaming up with harpist
and composer Catrin Finch

to produce a new work based
on Catrins first composition,
BALLET: TIR
Celtic Concerto.
