Are your finished pieces fit for their intended purpose?

For my final task, I had to design and make 4 different pieces for the Surfers
Against Sewage organisation that was the logo, merchandise, membership
form and campaign poster. With the pieces, I wanted to make sure that my
audience knew what the organisation would be so with the logo, I put the
organisation name in the logo. When making the logo, I looked a few similar
organisation logos so I could compare them and see what the similarities
would be so I could make a good logo. I thought that the Rainforest Alliance
logo would be something I would like to base my logo on, as it looks
professional. (See Figure 1.) This means that my logo fits the intended
purpose because by basing it on a similar product, it shows you what kind of
organisation it is. As my audience is children, I know that I needed to create
products that would catch their eye and would be fun to look at. As I have
mentioned already, I based my logo on the Rainforest Alliance logo which I
think was a good idea as their logo includes an animal, which is something
that children are interested in, so by also including an animal as part of my
logo, I think that it would be good for my audience and do its intended job. For
my membership form, I found it difficult to make something that would be
interesting for children as it includes lots of bank details which would lose the
childrens interest, so I thought I would have to create one that was fun. I
originally thought of having a beach of trash on the front, but the realised that
this wouldnt excite the children into joining, so I thought of something that
most children are into, which is cartoons; by creating sea creatures in a
cartoon form, the bright colours will definitely get the children excited to join
SAS. I created various sea creatures as I also thought that it would show
them what the organisation does and what animals they would be helping.
(See Figure 2.)
I felt like I had to add something physical to the process to make sure that
they would be excited to join, so by offering a free plush toy once they sign
up, it will get them exciting about choosing which one they want and to get
started. I felt like I made my membership form as easy as it could be, although
essentially it would be the parents who would help to fill out the form so I feel
like as a membership from, it looks like something that you would give
children if they wanted to join on organisation.
The campaign poster was a bit harder to make because it had to catch the
intention of the children. I started off by using the scene on the membership
form and adding some text, although once I had created it, I knew it didnt look
correct as there was too much going on with the text. I knew that I had to use
some bright colours to draw their attention, so I thought about taking different
characters from the membership form, and putting them as a main image on
the poster. (See Figure 3.) This way, it would be a huge cartoon on an A3
piece of paper, which would definitely get children interested. I thought that a
white background would be too plain, so by making the background bright as
well, it ties the poster together. I knew that the text had to be short, as children
wouldnt want to read something very long, so I decided to write small
sentences about the sea creatures and give them names. This is something
that children can relate to, as they would most likely have stuffed toys at
home, which they would also name. Including the website would also be

something they could look forward to looking up when they get home as
children like the Internet too. I think that the posters would be very effective
when it comes to being show in public as the children would be interested and
excited to find out about what SAS do, which is what their purpose is. Finally,
as merchandise I would have had to create something that the children would
want to wear and buy so the obvious choice would be t-shirts. I thought that
by including the sea characters from the posters on the t-shirts, this is
something that the children would want to buy as its fun and could also be
worn on any occasion. (See Figure 4.) The current SAS website do produce
merchandise aimed at children which also have characters on them, so
essentially, I am producing more so that the children would have a range of
different creatures to choose form. As merchandise aimed at children, it
wouldnt have been ideal for me to produce phone cases as at that age, they
probably wouldnt have one, so I thought that badges and stickers would be
more ideal as they are only small and fun and something which they could put
on their school bags which means that they could tell their friends about it too,
which would get more children joining the SAS, so I think that the
merchandise also fits the intended purpose as they are made to be sold,
which is what they will do. (See Figure 5.)
Do they communicate your message clearly?
I think that I have managed to communicate my messages clearly within the
time limit I had. With my products, I wanted to try and get children interested
in saving the sea life, as this is the campaign I wanted to focus on. This is why
I designed the four posters to help to draw children in and slightly educate
them about the problems that littering cause in the seas and oceans. As
children, they would not want to read huge sums of text so short sentences
are easier for them to understand and read, which I why I kept the posters
mainly image because it appeals to the children that way. These posters are
similar to the current SAS posters because they also include little text. Whilst
their posters are aimed at an older audience, so their images will be more
shocking and detailed, there are still similar traits such as the logo and SAS
website which I have also included in my posters. In the membership form, I
included bits of rubbish in the scene to show what things the sea creatures
have to share their home with, so this shows to children that the sea life arent
happy with living with plastics bags and bottles. (See Figure 6.) The message
that gets across to them is that we should remove them from the seas and
oceans because otherwise the animals suffer which is something that the
children wouldnt like. With my merchandise, I think that they could have been
better at getting the message across by making some products with writing on
them rather than just the characters as it would have been something
different, yet still sticking with the theme, but as my merchandise links in with
the rest of my finished pieces, I think that they still do get the message across
but not as strongly as they would have done if I had created some different
merchandise.
Are they appropriate for your target audience?
I chose to aim my products at a young audience as I felt like this age range
are less focused on when it comes to these types of organisations. With this
audience in mind, I knew that I would have to create products that were fun

and exciting in order to draw the children in to joining the SAS. I had to think
of things that I knew would get them interested in the campaign so I
researched into similar merchandise and posters etc that were aimed at
children and I found out that cartoon based products were something that
attracted children; so I thought that I would focus on the cartoon theme
throughout my products. With cartoons, they also need to have lots of colour,
which is why all of my products are very bright. The mixture of the two are
sure to get children interested in the SAS and what they are trying to achieve.
The merchandise was quite easy as when I looked at the current Surfers
Against Sewage childrens t-shirts, they already had some similar t-shirts with
a cartoon type whale and seagull on them, so I thought about doing
something similar by creating my own characters. (See Figure 2.) I used these
characters in a range of my products as I thought that this would help to link
them all together and would also keep the excitement for the children when
looking at each product, I think that this is very appropriate for my audience
because in my research, it showed me that children are interested in
cartoons, which is why I decided to follow that path. I find that all of my
products flow well together, which is good for children as its something that
they will recognise because the characters are used across all of the
products, so hopefully that when people see the products, they will instantly
recognise them as promoting the Surfers Against Sewage organisation.
Compare and contrast your original intentions with the outcomes you
arrived at.
After reading my original ideas, I definitely havent followed them like I had
planned to. I always end up changing my ideas once it comes to the
production section of the project because my original ideas dont work as I
imagine they would. This is a good and a bad thing because it means that I
create something completely different to what I came up with, which in a
professional situation might not be a positive thing as they are expecting one
thing yet get handed another. As a client, you agree on a proposal with the
worker, so if that was I and I produced something else, they might not be very
happy, as they might not like your new production. It could also be a good
thing because my production could come out better than my original ideas
that might make the client happier with my finished pieces. I always knew that
I wanted to focus on a younger audience; so coming up with a few ideas was
fairly easy to begin with. I had a clear idea of what I wanted my logo to look
like because I had done some research into logos from similar organisations
so this is something that I have managed to follow throughout the idea and
design process. I wanted to go with a bright colour scheme because I knew
that this is something that would get the children excited about, as they like to
look at things with colour. I feel like I did follow this, as my posters and
merchandise are full of bright colours. I stated in my idea generation that I
would make t-shirts in a range of bright colours, which is what I managed to
achieve from my original idea as well.
What I did change from my original idea was the fact that my posters and
membership form didnt turn out how I had stated. I said that the posters
would be of a beach covered in bits of rubbish. This is opposite to what I
actually came out with although I did test out my idea but it didnt work as I
had imagined. When coming up with the idea for my membership form, I didnt

know what I was going to do at that point, so I cant compare my original ideas
to my final product, although I did mention about the free plush toy which I still
went along with and I think that it really helps to make the membership form.
How effective are the techniques you have used? What are the technical
and aesthetical qualities of your work?
I think that I have used a range of techniques in order to create all of my final
four products. Photoshop was one of the applications that I used the most as I
used it to create all my sea creatures and the bright backgrounds. When using
Photoshop, I decided to get some sea creatures from the Internet in order to
create my own from similar ones currently out there. After I had gathered
some images, I placed them into Photoshop and started to rotoscope the
sections on the creatures so that I could change the colours and make them
individual and my own. This was very time consuming as they were quite
detailed so I had to put this into account when creating them, as I had to make
sure that I would have enough time to complete them and also to use them in
my final products. Rotoscoping is one of the techniques that I used when
creating my final products because I used it a lot when creating all of the sea
creatures. I think that this technique has been very effective because I
managed to create some good products by using this technique, although
after Rotoscoping the creatures, I also used the pen and eraser tools to
straighten out any imperfections that I wasnt happy with as I wanted to make
them look as professional as they could be. They definitely made the
difference to the creatures because when I looked after I had used the tools,
they certainly looked a lot smoother round the edges and have no gaps
showing. I also used the InDesign application to create my membership form.
I thought this application would be better to use than Photoshop because I
could use margins to line up my text properly so it would look more
professional. This really helped me because I was able to use the current
membership form to help me plan out all the boxes where my text would go,
so the margins were a good idea to use. When placing images into InDesign, I
had to use Photoshop to size them correctly otherwise the images would be
blurry, so using Photoshop to size them made the images look more
professional when put into InDesign. When making my merchandise, I used
Red Bubble to upload my designs on to so I could see what they would look
like when put on products. Red Bubble is a professional site so I thought it
was ideal to upload my designs onto there because I would be able to see
similar products and how they would look if they were to be produced. The
site also allowed me to see my t-shirt designs in different colours which was
ideal as the children could see which colours they would prefer, which would
also give them something to be excited about as they would like the bright
colours as well. (See Figure 7.) I also used other templates on Red Bubble to
create other things such as mugs and throw pillows. I thought these would be
good as children could also use these products. I had to rearrange the images
in order to fit them on the product properly and some were difficult so I had to
compromise in order to make them look good. (See Figure 8.)
To make my products I had to have text, so I went onto Da Font, which
allowed me to search through lots of different fonts and choose which ones
would look best for my products. I think that by using this site, it has allowed
me to get a font which is individual as not many people would have used it

before which I thought was a bonus. With my logo, I used a font which I
downloaded from that website and used it to write the name of the
organisation Surfers Against Sewage. It was difficult to work with because I
wanted to make the text curve around the logo, so I had to use a path tool to
make it curve the way I wanted it to. The problem was that the word sewage
would appear upside down when I used it on the path tool, so I had to curve it
separately, which was difficult to try and find the correct curvature to make it
look part of the logo. Although it was difficult, I think I managed to make it
work with the rest of the text, so I think that it helps to make the logo look
aesthetically pleasing. I think that there are a few aesthetical qualities in my
work such as the posters. I think that I like the look of them best than the other
3 finished products. This is because I enjoyed making them the most as it
took some skill to create the sea creatures. I think that the posters are fun to
look at and the colours will definitely attract the children, which I think that
they are aesthetically pleasing on the eye. The range of merchandise I have
provided will also look good because there are lots of different things to
choose from, so people will enjoy looking through them all rather than having
a limited selection which might not be as exciting.
Is the content effective?
There is a lot of content in my finished products which I think appeals to my
target audience well. The one thing that I think that defines my products are
the sea creatures because they are the things that the children will remember
most and associate with. As it took me a fair amount of time to make the
creatures, I would expect them to be of good quality as that is why I spent a
long time on them. I wanted to make something that the children would
remember and be excited about, which is why I chose to make the animals
because most often, children like animals and care about helping them. When
making the membership form, I felt that it was difficult to create a form that
would get the children excited because it usually contains back information,
which is something that they wouldnt have an interest in, so that is why I
included the bright colours and free toy because with that content, it will be
effective as the children will be drawn in. I think this is what makes the content
effective because you need to appeal to your target audience, which is what I
think I have done. I also think that the content is effective because I enjoyed
creating them, which is why I think that they have come out of good quality
and I wouldnt have used the products if I didnt think that they would do their
job. In the past, when it has come to production, I have always been stronger
at it than writing tasks, so I found that I enjoy this production because past
feedback has shown me that I can create some good work, which is one of
the reasons why I also think the content is effective in this project because I
have become more confident in my work so I now think I can judge when
something will work.
What impact do you think your advertising campaign will have on the
public?
I think that my advertising campaign will have a positive effect on the public
because I have tried to appeal to my audience in a way that would get them
interested in the organisation and what they do. I hope that the posters are
able to get through to children and get them to want to help the animals by

signing up. I would also hope that my campaign would appeal to adults too
because they will understand the effects of rubbish on beaches and their
children will explain about the posters they see. I would have liked to create
some more adult appropriate products as well so I could link them all together
as I think this would get a larger audience involved, so if I had enough time,
this is something that I would have pursued.
I want the public to know that there are animals suffering because of all of the
litter we are throwing onto the beaches and into the seas and oceans. I
wanted to focus my campaign on the sea life because this is something that I
am interested in myself, so thought it would be good for me to create products
on this campaign as I could put my feelings into the products. I am hoping that
the advertising campaign will have a word of mouth effect as the
merchandise especially will be talking point if you are sporting a t-shirt or
holding the tote bag as other people might be interested in where you got the
products from, meaning that they would find out abut Surfers Against Sewage
which may result in them signing up and becoming members as well.
