TOPIC: APPROPRIATE SANITATION VARIABILITY ASSESSEMENT IN IPRC KIGALI LATRINES

I.INTRODUTION
I.BACK GROUND OF STUDY
Proper sanitation facilities (for example: toilets and latrines) promote health because they allow
people to dispose of their wastes appropriately.
Throughout the developing of IPRC, many people do not have access to suitable sanitation
facilities, resulting in improper wastes disposal.
Clean water supply and adequate sanitation system are considered to be the most important
factors in ensuring good health in community.
Appropriate sanitation is a hygienic means of promoting health through prevention of human
contact with the hazards of wastes as well as the treatment and proper disposal of sewage or
waste water.
Sanitation is any system that promote proper disposal of human and animal wastes, proper use
of toilet and avoiding open space defecation.
2. Problem statement
Diseases related to inadequate water and sanitation and hygiene are a huge burden in
developing countries, schools especially IPRC Kigali.in urban areas often partially lack using
water and appropriate sanitation in quality and quantity.
Poor sanitation and poor water supply is highly remarkable in developing countries included
Rwanda and It causes diseases and death. By referring to the report made by WHO in 2000
poor hygiene, poor water supply and poor sanitation cause 4% of all death in the world.
In IPRC KIGALI people increase highly year by year or day to day depending on happened events
inside the campus, that characterized with old buildings: Existing latrines used in hostels, offices
and classes that did not improved even the users increased. Improvement of the existing
sanitation in the campus is needed by engineering intervention in order to find ways of
achieving on solutions; Research should provide information about the issue of inappropriate
and guide them to solve these problem themselves.
3. Purpose of the study
The aim of this study is to state the problem and challenges and to find out sustainable and
durable solution that will contribute appropriate sanitation in IPRC Kigalis latrines.

4. Objectives of the study

1. Main objectives: In general, objective of the study is to assess the problem to look for the
cause of variability of appropriate sanitation in IPRC KIGALI.
2. Specific objectives
The following are specific objectives of this research:

To classify different sources of inappropriate sanitation.

To assess negative impact due to when appropriate sanitation is not achieved.
To limit inappropriate sanitation and vector diseases.
Analyze the properly use of latrines in the campus.

5.Scope of the study

According to the above problems statement ,this research will look for appropriate
sanitation,as the part of sanitation technology ; It will assess economic, social, health impacts
from unappropriated sanitation when latrines are not used and cleaned properly. This research
will tell exactly what will be done in space and time theorically Case study in IPRC KIGALI from
2014/2015

6. Material and method

The materials that will be used in this research is a camera, computer and our voice to get
information. The methods that will be used are observation and interview.
7. Proposed work plan
The proposed research is subdivided into two phases:
Collection of data from IPRC officer (staff), visit the proposed site and data analysis and give
some recommendation.
8. Proposed data
Proposed data are grouped in two basic categories; quantitative and qualitative techniques. In
general, quantity method produce hard number while qualitative method captures more
descriptive data. The method you choose are determined by the purpose of your evaluation
and the resource you have; in this research we use quantitative and qualitative to collect data.
9. Research instrument
For getting the data, the research instrument is most important component data and guide you
in collection, gathering information in order to prevent spending too much time and money. In

this research we will use the following instrument: Digital camera, Laptop, calculator, Interview
and questionnaire.
10. Significance of the project
The research of appropriate sanitation variability assessment in IPRC Kigali latrines will have
significant because it contributes in students welfare and social and environment sustainability
in IPRC Kigali. Not only this research can give all information to the IPRC Kigalis staff, show how
the situation is. Also to show the benefits and policy, measures of appropriate sanitation.
After assessment of the problem, by getting and analyzing information gotten, we will give
recommendations about appropriate sanitation.
Concerning the social, the project will help people to be protect from diseases caused by
inappropriate sanitation and some illness lead to death. This research will offer the means and
the way how appropriate sanitation stability will be achieved.
