PROJECT SCOPE
The goal of this project is to design and detail the foundations, ground floor slabs, elevated floor
slabs, and structural steel framing for the Ubuntu Center building. The Ubuntu Center Building
consists of a ground concrete floor slab, 2 elevated concrete floor slabs and a elevated concrete
roof slab with a maximum building height of 45-0.
Metal composite-decking will be used for the elevated slabs to allow for faster construction,
longer spans, and the use of temperature and shrinkage steel reinforcement only.
Due to the proposed fast-track construction, and that minimal savings are achieved with unshored construction, the design of the structural members will be non-composite.
Moment Frames will be used to maximize open floor space and window vistas.
Per the submitted geotechnical report, foundations shall consist of singular and combined
reinforced concrete spread footings.

LOADS
DEAD LOADS
Self weight
Self weight of members will be increased by 5% to account for bolted connections
Floor Dead Loads
Applicable dead loads (estimates) in accordance with Table C3-1 (pp. 262 & 263) of ASCE
7-05 (UNO).
Dead Load of Structural Deck = 53 psf (5 2VLI18 Composite Deck, See Attachment)
Mechanical Duct Allowance = 4 psf
Floor Finishes Allowance = 10 psf
(Section 4.2.2, p. 9)
While partitions are accounted for in ASCE chapter for live loads, this value is specified as a
dead load due to its use as effective seismic weight.
Use Floor Dead Load = 53+4+10+15 = 82 psf Use DLF = 82 psf
Roof Dead Loads
Dead Load of Structural Deck = 53 psf

LIVE LOADS
The floor and roof live loads for schools are in accordance with Table 4-1 ( p.13) of ASCE 7-05.

SEISMIC LOADS
Marc Rader
6/20/2015
The building falls under the design provisions of Chapter 12 of ASCE 7-05. The Seismic Load
Resisting System (SLRS) is an Ordinary Steel Concentrically Braced Frame (OCBF). A
summary of the seismic design parameters is provided below:
Site Specific Design Parameters:
(Soil Not Known Use D, See 11.4.2, p.115)
Site Class:
C*
Spectral Accelerations:
Ss=0.241 g, S1=0.0.088 g
Site Coefficients:
Fa=1.6, Fv=2.4
SMs=0.385 g, SM1=0.210 g
SDs=0.257g, SD1=0.140 g
Long-Period Transition:
TL=12 sec
*Note, I found a location (Fresno, CA) that would require design for a Seismic Design
Category C (OCBF max height for SDC D = 35-0) so that I could perform the evaluation
for an OCBF (R=3.00) and not get into the high level of seismic detailing for a SCBF(R=6).
Furthermore, the special provisions allowing for selection of the seismic design category
based solely on Table 11.6-1 were satisfied: S1(0.226g) < 0.75g
(1) Ta (CtHn^x=0.02(72)^0.75=0.494s ) < 0.8Ts (0.8(SD1/SDs)=0.8*0.293/0.478 =
0.490s [doesnt satisfy but is close moving on]
(2) T<Ts for Story drift, Okaywill be met
(3) Eq 12.8-2 is used for derivation of Cs, Okaywill be met,
(4) Rigid Diaphragms will be used.
Building Specific Design Parameters:
Note: The design coefficients used are from ASCE 7-05, Table 12.2-1, H. Steel Systems Not
