Exposuretotheseextremeconditionshasalteredthemineralogy,
textureandchemicalcompositionoftherocks.Therearetwobasic
typesofmetamorphicrocks:1)foliatedmetamorphicrockssuchas
gneiss,phyllite,schistandslatewhichhavealayeredorbanded
appearancethatisproducedbyexposuretoheatanddirected
pressureand,2)nonfoliatedmetamorphicrockssuchasmarble
andquartzitewhichdonothavealayeredorbandedappearance.

Phylliteisafoliatemetamorphicrockthatismadeupmainlyofveryfine
grainedmica.Thesurfaceofphylliteistypicallylustrousandsometimes
