ofGrendelsexplorationoftheworldofhumansandhowGrendelsthoughts,experiencesand
emotionsaretheonlythatmatterintheworld,whichisthebasisofsolipsism.Thephilosophy
isapparentinthischapterasGrendelcannotconceivehowfeelingsaretobeappliedinany
othersensethanthatofhimself.Thecaregiverarchetypeisshowninthischapter,Grendels
mothersaveshimjustasGrendelbelieveshewillfalltothehumans.Anotherarchetypeisthe

pessimismandskepticism.ThenihilismcanbeseenthroughGrendelsencounterwiththe
dragon,apessimisticcreature.Thisphilosophyisaccurateinthischapterbecausethedragon
isatruenihilisticwhoservesnopurposeotherthantheimpulsetodestroy.Thearchetypes
thatareassociatedwiththischapteraretheinnocentandtheruler.Theinnocentarchetypeis
portrayedbyGrendelbecauseheisstillunknowingofthedragonsevilandtheruleristhe
dragonbecauseitclaimstoknoweverythingandisstrongerthanallphysicalentities.

Inthischapter,ethicalegoismisthephilosophythatframestheencounterofUnferthby
Grendel.Thisphilosophyistrueinthischapterbecausethecenterofdiscussionbetween

thechapterwhenGrendelencountersHrothulfandRedHorse.Grendelstatesthathecreated
thehumanswhattheyare,claimingthathisattacksgavethemendignityandnobility,
therefore,hehasarighttotestthem.Thearchetypeseeninthischapteristheruleras
Grendelbelieveshecreatedthemenandmadethemwhotheywere.

Chapter9:
Inthischapter,thephilosophyisWhiteheadsprocessbecauseinthechapter,Grendel
describesexistencethroughprocessesandexperiencesthathegoesthrough.These

experiencesarebasedonhisencounterswiththepriestsandHrothgarsbowmen.The
encountersthemselvesaretobeseenasusingWhiteheadsprocessesbecausethey
describethegeneralfeaturesofphilosophieswithjustexperiences.Thejungianarchetypes
shownherearetheinnocent,therebelandthemagician.Orkcanbeseenasboththe
innocentandtherebelbecauseheissogullibletoGrendelsremarksandischastisedbythe
otherpriestsforbelievingthattheDestroyerhasvisitedhim.Grendelisthemagicianashe
fabricatesandinventsanewimageofhimself.

Inthischapter,thephilosophyisofNietzschestylebecausethechapterraisesmany
questionsaboutthevalueoftruthandhoweventsareportrayed.Theseeventsareportrayed
whenGrendelencountersthegoat,hismother,theshaperandhisassistant.Grendel
