Nations Longest Winning Streaks

WSU is tied for the fifth longest winning streak, and longest in the GLIAC
entering 2015 at four games: Colorado State-Pueblo (9), Azusa Pacific (9),
Mercyhurst (7), McKendree (5), Wayne State (4), Gannon (4), Northern
State (4), Chadron State (4), Tusculum (4) and Concordia-St. Paul (4).

Warrior Smarts

Wayne State had 26 student-athletes receive Academic All-GLIAC honors for

Fall 2014 including two senior captains (Thom Box and Ben Walker) who
were honored for the fourth time. Three-time honorees on the 2015 squad
include Zak Bielecki, Carl Roscoe, Mike Sawchuk, Nate Theaker and
Ethan Walsh.

Returning All-GLIAC Performers

Of the 15 All-GLIAC selections from 2014, six are returning in First Team
honorees Nate Theaker (offensive line) and Trent Brodbeck (tight end),
Second Team selections of Paul Graham (kicker/punter) and Jake Carrizales
(defensive end) and two who were named to the Honorable Mention Team in
Zak Bielecki (safety) and Ethan Walsh (tight end).

2015 Signing Class

The 30 NLI signees for 2015 marks the second largest class in Paul Winters
12 years at WSU. The only larger signing class was in 2012 (31).

Consistent Leader

Paul Winters will become the second-longest tenured football coach in

program history this fall with 12 seasons. He is currently tied with the founder
of WSU athletics David Holmes. Hall of Fame coach Joseph Gembis holds
the WSU record with 14 seasons (1932-45).

Model Of Success

Wayne State has compiled at least a .500 season in six of the last seven years
combining for a 50-31 mark in that span. Prior to Coach Winters arrival in
2004, The Tartars/Warriors had 10 consecutive losing seasons on the field and
only one winning season on the field in 19 years.

Replacing Desmond

Desmond Martins 292 rushing yards in the 47-28 win at Lake Erie was the
fourth-highest single-game mark last year in Division II behind Azusa Pacifics
Terrell Watsons 338 vs. Menlo in a 54-0 win; Gannons Brock Jones 321 in a
66-41 victory vs. East Stroudsburg; and Alderson-Broadduss Brandon Jones
316 in a 57 37 win at Pace.

and designed by Assistant Media Relations Director Cameron
Weidenthaler with assistance from Associate Athletics Director
for Media Relations Jeff Weiss.

Mission Statement

Wayne State University believes that intercollegiate athletics

are an important and wholesome adjunct to the principal
purposes of the University: (1) the advancement of knowledge
through research and investigation; and (2) the dissemination
of knowledge through teaching. To that end, participants in
intercollegiate athletics must be, first and foremost, students
whose fundamental aim is to obtain a sound education.

2015 Wayne State Football Spring Guide

Head football coach Paul Winters sat down with Associate Athletics Director for Media
Relations Jeff Weiss to discuss the spring and the 2015 season.
JW: You have 45 returning letterwinners heading into spring practice. What
are your goals and expectations for the spring practices?
PW: The main objective is to continue the development of our team. The younger guys
need to learn the schemes and improve upon positional technique. The older guys need
to make improvements and limit the mistakes that held them back in the past.
JW: A position that saw some new faces throughout the year was on the
offensive line. Can you discuss how the shuffling of that group will be an asset
this season?
PW: That was valuable experience for those guys. Tommy Richardson is only going to be
a sophomore and he has played a lot of football for us. We have moved two of our best
lineman, Nate Theaker and Robert Kelly, around a little due to last seasons injuries. So
those two have increased value to us with the ability to play in different spots.
JW: There seems to be quite a bit of depth at the tight end position. How do
you plan on managing playing time at that position?
PW: Yes, we have four that have played for us. We are in a good situation there and
redshirt freshman Preston Pelham is having a good spring. We are developing different
packages to better utilize our depth. We have a big package where we have the bigger
two (Ethan Walsh and Aaron Weston) in the game. Then we have a smaller but faster
package where Trent Brodbeck and Nathan White who are quicker and more athletic.
We will find ways to use all of them.
JW: With the graduation of Desmond Martin the running back position will
have some eyes on it. What are you seeing from that position through spring
ball? There are some guys in that group that are a bit more unproven than we
have had in the past.
PW: A lot more unproven! This is a situation where we had one running back that ran for
100 yards returning. I dont know if we have been in that type of situation since I started.
For the first time since 2004 (my first year at WSU), we do not have a proven running
back to count on. We have always had depth there. We have talent now. Romello Brown
has had an outstanding spring. He is a load at 230 pounds on a light day. We have guys
that will give us the speed outside look with Demetrius Stinson and Deiontae Nicholas.
We also have Rabeah Beydoun who is dependable and has done a good job for us.
JW: A surprise last season was Romellos ability as a receiver.
PW: He is a good athlete. He can catch a football as well as anybody weve had other
than probably Josh Renel and there are times when he has been at that level. Thats the
great thing about that position all four are solid receivers.
JW: Speaking of receivers, Michael Johnson and Val Showers were both
seniors last season. This year you have Brandon Tinsley, Jamel Hicks and Will
Wheat. What are your predictions for that spot?
PW: We really havent had a guy thats been the guy. But when you watch Michael
Johnson on film last season he was tremendous. He went to Western Michigans
Pro Day and was arguably the best athlete there so it will be hard to replace him. As
you watch us in practice, what stands out is the ability and how some of the guys are
growing up pretty fast. Jamel Hicks has been awesome. Hes had a great spring and
is going to be a good player for us. Hes such a competitor and is a tough player. Will
Wheat has all the ability in the world and we are ready to unlock it. Its his senior year
and we want to let him go out and have a great season. When Brandon Tinsley plays
with confidence he is as good as anybody. That group is a bit unsung and people dont
realize how good they are. Logan Smith and Manny Mendoza have had great springs.
The great thing about those guys is that they are 6-3 and 215 pounds so you are talking
about Michael Johnson territory.
JW: Getting those guys the ball will be key. You have Carl Roscoe returning
but after that there is no experience.
PW: Carl understands the offense as well as the coaches for the most part. We are
always trying to improve and work on the fundamentals with him. In terms of the rest
of that group, we are trying to get them reps and experience. They are not wearing the
red jerseys anymore and are live. I think for Trevor Van Tubbergen is it just a matter of
reps because his release is as quick as anyone we have had since Mickey Mohner. Tyler
Crowell has probably the strongest arm of the bunch so when he gets there mentally he
is going to be a hard guy to hold back. He is more of a pocket passer but he is faster than
you think and is tremendously talented. He can spin it.

WSUAthletics.com

JW: On the defensive line you have All-League performer Jake Carrizales
headlining that group.
PW: We have fantastic depth on the defensive line. The competition and the talent is
the best weve had. Jake Carrizales is a great talent. He is relentless and tough. Dalton
Binkowski is back this year and is a little bigger so he may be moving inside and help
us compete there. Rafaat El Hage was a great player for us last year. He is as quick and
as strong as any nose tackle in the league and maybe in the country. Derrick Rodgers
is 6-4, 285 pounds and is a dominant football player. People are going to be amazed at
how good he is. Derrick Coleman is a guy we redshirted last year but will be an impact
player this year. He is a talent and really competes, especially in the weight room. Adam
Williams is the other newcomer that had to sit out last year after transferring. He is a
dynamic and explosive defensive end.
JW: The linebacker position has always been a strength at WSU. Replacing
someone like Nores Fradi is close to impossible but we have
some young guys that have the potential to continue
that history of Warrior linebackers.
PW: As you follow our program you notice we redshirt our
guys and have them come back for that fifth year. You
really see the development and those guys step up as
leaders. For example in 2008 we had the best defense in
the league and Adam Nuckols was a big reason for that.
This past year, we had Marcell Jones who we werent sure
was going to beat out Valorian Cunningham and
Marcell was fantastic. Obviously it will be
tough to replace Nores, who was a First
Team All-American. We have Idris
Hobdy who will be a solid player
for us. Cunningham who missed
half the season a year ago can
be as explosive as Nores. We
expect those two and Anthony
DeDamos to be the starters.
However, there are some
exciting young guys behind
them. We look forward
to seeing Dustin Carlin
continue to develop. Drew
Dowding, Carterris Carter,
Randy Garvin, Anthony
Pittman and Zach Heddy
are all good football
players and they realize
they better work hard.
JW: Gerren DuHart
Winters is entering his 12th season at WSU.
started for three and
a half years and was a
mainstay. Then you look at what you have coming back. You have Brandon
Lee, James Howard, Zak Bielecki, Jamiil Williams and a group of younger guys
that are vying for playing time.
PW: We are doing okay in the secondary. I think James Howard will do a fine job
replacing DuHart and we do not miss a beat. Brandon Lee should have a fantastic senior
season. In my opinion, Bielecki should have been a First Team All-GLIAC selection.
Williams has played a lot of football for us and is bigger, faster and stronger than he has
ever been. We are excited about our secondary.
JW: Paul Graham had an outstanding freshman year. We really did not miss
a beat after Stefan Terleckyj graduated. What other players can make an
impact on special teams?
PW: We didnt miss a single extra point or a field goal until the last game of the year.
Paul was everything we could have asked for. He really improved as a punter and was
an All-League guy. You dont just live off of last years numbers, but we realize we have
the ability to get the job done. Majd Khytaz will continue to be reliable on kickoffs and
I dont want to put too much pressure on him but Deiontae Nicholas is so explosive and
can be an x-factor in the return game. He impressed us on the scout team.

2015 Wayne State Football Spring Guide

FOOTBALL SIGNS 30 ON NATIONAL SIGNING DAY

Wayne State University head football coach Paul Winters
announced his 2015 recruiting class consisting of 30 incoming
freshmen, who signed their National Letters of Intent.
Every year our football staff works extremely hard to attract
quality student-athletes to Wayne State University, stated
Winters. Without hesitation I will say this is the finest work
that our coaching staff has ever done. The difference between
talented football players and winning student-athletes is
character. This is a group of young men who will be defined by
the word character!
