About company

Samsung is a South Korean multinational conglomerate company headquartered

in Samsung Town, Seoul. Samsung was founded by Lee Byung-chul in 1938 as
a trading company. According to the founder of Samsung Group, the meaning
of the Korean hanja word Samsung is "tristar" or "three stars". The word "three"
represents something "big, numerous and powerful. Over the next three
decades, the group diversified into areas including food processing, textiles,
insurance, securities and retail. Samsung entered the electronics industry in the
late 1960s and the construction and shipbuilding industries in the mid-1970s;
these areas would drive its subsequent growth. Following Lee's death in 1987,
Samsung was separated into four business groups Samsung Group, Shinsegae
Group, CJ Group and Hansol Group. Since 1990s, Samsung has increasingly
globalized its activities, and electronics, particularly mobile phones and
semiconductors, have become its most important source of income.

CSR Management
At Samsung Electronics, the aim of CSR management is to promote mutual
growth with its stakeholders through Samsungs corporate vision of Leading
Digital Convergence Innovation and its CSR vision of Global Harmony with
People, Society and Environment, ultimately become a widely respected
corporate citizen. To that end, a CSR Liaison Office was set up under the CEOs
supervision in January 2009, to build a company-wide consensus and organize
its corporate social responsibility practice. With the launch of the CSR Liaison
Office, we devised a company-wide CSR mid-term strategy, centralized its CSR
communication channels, and established CSR meeting programs as part of its
internal CSR infrastructure. Samsung Electronics CSR initiatives are classified
into Integrity Management, Green Management, Social Contribution, Products
& Services and Partner Collaboration with business partners. We ensure that
business activities are closely connected with ours CSR activities in response to
stakeholder needs and major issues. Chaired by the CEO, Partner Collaboration
Executive Meetings are held twice a year as official CSR meetings. In the
meetings, the executive management in charge of the five CSR initiatives
decide on CSR policies, check the performances of each division, and come up
with follow up action items and measures reflective of the major CSR issues
and trends. Partner Collaboration & Enhancement Office also holds quarterly
working-level meetings. Samsung Electronics will continue to share and
implement its CSR initiatives while maintaining communications with its
stakeholders to collect and reflect their opinions in the companys future CSR
activities.

Environment Management Initiatives

Eco-Products
a. Eco design
In 2004, Samsung developed and set up the Eco-Design Assessment system.
This system manages products compliance with environmental criteria
developed based on resource efficiency, energy efficiency and eco-friendly
materials. This system ensures that our products and devices such as LCD and
semiconductor to comply with the global environmental regulations as well as
satisfies consumer demands for eco-friendly products. Samsung is also
launching various innovative eco-products in the market and increasing the
acquisition of global eco-labels and energy labels through the eco-design
management system.
b. Eco design
The Korea Eco-labelling Program started from April 1992. It is a voluntary
certification program that endorses eco-products based on good quality and
performance, as well as eco-friendliness through their entire life cycle.
c. Paper Management
Samsung Electronics recognizes that sustainable paper use is crucial for climate
change mitigation and environmental protection. The company is committed to
sustainable sourcing of paper based on following approaches.
d. Energy Labels

The US Environmental Protection Agency developed the Energy Star program

to identify and promote energy-efficient products that reduce greenhouse gas
emissions. Since its inception in the U.S. in 1992, the Energy Star logo is now
recognized in many countries and covers a wide range of products including
office equipment, TVs and white goods.

Sustainability in operation
a. Environment, Safety & Health (EHS) Policy
Samsung Electronics has established an Environment, Safety and Health (ESH)
policy that complies rigorously with local and regional regulations and
requirements wherever our production lines operate around the world. Through
these efforts, Samsung Electronics is striving to preserve the surrounding
environment and to share sustainable growth with local communities
b. ESH management
In compliance with the global standards of ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001,
Samsung Electronics operates a health and safety system and environmental
management system in all of its production facilities around the world. All
operations have acquired the certification of ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 and
undergo scheduled audits and renewals. An automated monitoring system that
manages the emission of environmentally hazardous wastes and pollutants is
also installed at all production facilities. Through scheduled diagnosis on
production lines for environment, safety and fire hazards, Samsung Electronics
strives to achieve continuous improvement in ESH Management at all facilities.
c. Biodiversity
Demand for the protection of biodiversity is increasing since an international
agreement on biodiversity protection was signed in 1992. Samsung Electronics
is responding to changing demands by raising awareness on the importance of
biodiversity. We have created a basic philosophy and action plan on biodiversity
protection to promote it in our business activities.
d. Water Resource recycling
Sustainable water supply and water source preservation has become an
important priority among all electronics companies including Samsung

Electronics. Responding growing industry needs, EICC and WBCSD which is

international business organizations for CSR have created corporate water
resource management guidelines. Recognizing the growing importance of
global water resource management, we have established water policies with a
focus on enhanced stakeholder communication and minimization of
management risk.

Climatic Changes
1) Policy and Goals:Samsung Electronics recognizes that governments as well as companies
have responsibilities to address the global challenges posed by climate
change. Samsung Electronics supports global mandatory cuts of
greenhouse gas emissions of at least 50% by 2050 (from 1990 levels) and
mandatory domestic cuts by industrialized countries (Annex I countries
of Kyoto Protocol) of at least 30% as a group by 2020. The company also
calls for global greenhouse gas emissions to peak by 2015.
To control and reduce greenhouse gas emissions effectively, the company
is building a GHG inventory for its business activities. This includes
Scope 1 and 2 (direct emissions and electricity purchases from global
business operations and production sites), as well as Scope 3 emissions
which are other indirect emissions from product use, product transport,
suppliers and employees business travel.
Samsung plans to reduce its GHG emissions intensity normalized by
sales (metric tonnes of CO2 per KRW 100 million) by 50% until 2013
based on the level of 2008. Also, the company plans to reduce the GHG
emissions by 24% compared to BAU (business as usual) by 2015 to meet
the Korean government's mid-term GHG reduction target and policy.
The reduction target covers all production sites in Korea only, since this
represents almost 90% of global GHG emissions in the company.
2) GHG Management for Scope 1 and 2:Samsung Electronics' total emissions of greenhouse gases with regional
breakdown are shown in Figure 1. The Global GHG emissions of Scope 1
and 2 in 2012 were decreased to 34% from 2011. It was mainly because
of structural reorganization, including separation of the LCD business

division.
The GHG emission data for Korea between 2010 and 2012 was adjusted
with third party verification in June 2012 according to Korea national
GHG target management rule.
Figure 2 demonstrates the decrease in GHG emissions normalized by
sales which was mainly resulting from the companys GHG reduction
initiatives. We have taken various measures including the installation of
facilities for reducing GHG emissions from industrial processes,
improvement in energy efficiency of production facilities and, installation
of high efficient facilities and we will continue to implement various
GHG reduction measures.
3) GHG Management for Scope 3:The below diagram provides an overview of GHG emissions occurred by
Samsung Electronics entire business activities. This was estimated and
developed based on currently available data for Scope 1, 2 and 3. Scope 1
and 2 data are managed well and verified by the third party organizations.
The company is investigating ways to improve Scope 3 data since it has
technical and manageable limitations on data collection management in
supply chain and transportation, etc.
Global Greenhouse Gas Emission Breakdown Diagram:-

4) Energy Management:-

Samsung Electronics has adopted various measures such as highefficiency facilities, energy management systems and training programs
for employees to reduce energy consumption across all manufacturing
sites.
The company established a working group for energy management which
meets every two months to share best practice for energy saving and
management throughout all business divisions. The company is also
implementing internal energy management program called Precertification of Energy Efficiency for all energy using devices,
equipment, and raw materials in order to promote energy efficiency
improvement in operations
To manage energy use more systematically and efficiently, the company
has now established the international standard for energy management
system (ISO 50001) in production sites. It can be certified from the third
party institutions by setting energy reduction targets and implementing
energy reduction programs. As of June 2012, the company gained ISO
50001 for all production sites in Korea, and it plans to achieve third party
certification for all global production sites by 2013.

Take Back and Recycle

1) Policy & principle:Samsung Electronics supports the concept of Individual Producer
Responsibility (IPR), and understands that this is a critical mechanism to
incentivize manufacturers to make better products and dramatically
reduce the level of WEEE arising through traditional waste disposal
options such as landfill and incineration.
The company has been engaged at the highest levels of industry and
government discussions on whether IPR is attainable, and if so, how. Yet
still, even the most pro-active companies, with mature voluntary internal
take-back schemes and years of experience, cannot produce workable
proposals that are feasible for all producers and governments, financially,
logistically or environmentally.
2) Take back & recycling problems:After the WEEE (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment) directive
became effective in Europe from 2005, governments in Asia and America
have become increasingly interested in developing recycling law and
recycling systems for proper collection, treatment and recycling of
electronic waste. Samsung Electronics has established take back systems
to comply with the requirements of recycling laws where they exist. The
company closely works with governments and industry associations to
develop most effective take back systems and meet its obligations.
3) How to recycle Samsung products:We all have a responsibility to ensure that electronic products are
properly disposed of at the end of their lives. Recycling electronics
conserves natural resources and minimizes the environmental impact of
improper disposal. Please return your Samsung product for recycling
when it reaches the end of its useful life. Details on how you can return
unwanted products are set out below:

4) Recycling performance:Samsung Electronics promotes that all its products are collected and
recycled at the end of their lifecycle, so that it can contribute to reserving
clean environment by reusing resources. The company has established
recycling infrastructure in Korea. It also finances for the collection and
recycling of its products in many other countries. Samsung Electronics
continuously work to increase the amount of recyclable products. Below
are the amounts that Samsung Electronics recycled across all its product
groups in Korea and Japan from 2004, in Europe from 2005, and in the
United States from 2006.

5) Packing & Battery recycling

Samsung Electronics has joined a packaging compliance scheme in each
country where we are obligated as a producer. Through these compliance
schemes Samsung Electronics funds the activities of waste collectors and
recycling operators to ensure that, wherever possible, packaging from our
products is reused, recovered or recycled free of charge to all consumers.

Green Management
Framework:Samsung Electronics green management strategy
enables us to grow sustainably and invest in the future of
both humanity and nature. We established our green
management vision based on the underlying philosophy
that we have a duty to help build a prosperous society and
preserve the environment through business activities that
respect people and nature. Our green management
activities are reinforced under our slogan of PlanetFirst.
Samsung Electronics is committed to leading way to a
sustainable society. Through our green management
activities, we are contributing to the prosperity of
humanity and the conservation of the natural
environment.
Global Green Management System We have established a
global green management system, ensure full compliance
with all environment safety and health regulations at all
our operation sites with factories, and enforce strict EHS
internal standards. Green Manufacturing Process In order
to minimize the release of greenhouse gas emissions and
pollutants, we have established manufacturing processes
that employ the best available clean manufacturing
technologies and improve resource and energy efficiency.
Life Cycle Responsibility for Products and Services We take
full responsibility for ensuring minimal environmental
impact and maximum safety at all stages of the product
life cycle, including parts and raw materials acquisition,
product development and manufacturing, distribution and
use, repair and maintenance, and end-of-life disposal,
reuse, or recycling. Protection the Environment We take
action against climate change to preserve the
environment and protect local communities. We disclose
our green management policies and achievements to both
our internal and external stakeholders.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT:Samsung Engineering is always looking for new, more innovative ways
to achieve green efficiency and further reduce industrial impact on the
environment. This commitment to sustainability is reflected at every stage
of the EPC process.
During pre-commissioning, Samsung Engineering conducts a feasibility
study to identify site-specific environmental impact control points.
Building on that analysis, the engineering design team then looks for
opportunities to streamline energy use and reduce pollutant output. The
procurement team takes the design teams component list and identifies
the suppliers who produce the greenest products, and then the
transportation team works to optimize delivery schedules and logistics to
minimize carbon emissions. On the jobsite, the project team creates a
construction environment management plan (CEMP) to maximize
resource efficiency, minimize the release of pollutants and preserve local
biodiversity. Once the plant has been transferred to the client, its real-time
environmental monitoring systems and efficient industrial components
allow the client to operate the plant while minimizing its impact on the
environment, reducing energy, water and chemical consumption in the
process.
Although we follow strict internal policies regarding environmental
preservation, we also abide by internationally recognized, third-party
regulatory guidelines. In 1996, Samsung Engineering first earned the ISO
14001 certification, a stringent environmental certification that has since
been offered to many of our regional offices around the globe. In 2011,
we decided to revamp our green management system in order to earn the
KS I 7001 certification, which includes standards for energy efficiency,
greenhouse gas, and social responsibility in addition to the core standards
of ISO 14001.

SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTAL
INITIATIVE SYSTEM:Samsung Engineering's Sustainable Environmental
Initiative System (SEIS) is an internal three-part
proprietary environmental monitoring systemEMS, GMS
and GPIthat collects data from each of our project sites
every month. The Environmental Management System
(EMS) enables planning, site management, and monitoring
in accordance with ISO 14001. The Greenhouse Gas
Management System (GMS) measures and tracks
emissions, and the Green Performance Indicator (GPI)
allows Samsung Engineering to analyze environmental
performance statistics.

ENVIRONMENTALLY HAZARDOUS
WORK PERMIT SYSTEM:In order to minimize environmental hazards, Samsung
Engineering has implemented a project permit system,
which requires construction plans to be checked for
potential environmental risk factors. For any project found
to require an environmental mitigation plan, a work permit
is issued. Those environmentally sensitive projects are
then monitored throughout the construction process by
inspectors who visit each job site to verify that the
construction team is adhering to the limitations and
requirements of the permits.
Samsung Engineering meets or exceeds global standards and guidelines
for environment protection and preservation. As a means to improve the
overall quality of environmental performance, we have used third-party
verification organizations to check our green management system.

WASTE AND HAZARDOUS MATERIAL

MANAGEMENT:Samsung Engineering applies the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) principle
to minimize the environmental effect brought on by waste materials
produced from our construction sites. We constantly monitor our project
sites to make sure our waste management plans are being carried out
effectively and performance targets are being met. We also collect data on
environmental near misses that take place at project sites and share
these findings with other sites so that similar near misses do not transpire
again.

RESPONSE TO CLIMATE CHANGE:Samsung Engineerings response to climate change has included annual
assessments of climate change related risks as well as greenhouse gas
reduction campaigns to minimize emissions while maximizing
performance.
Samsung Engineering began collecting Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
data from domestic construction sites in 2007, and expanded the coverage
to overseas sites in 2008. Then, in 2009, we launched an online data
consolidation system, which simplified the collection, analysis, and
reporting of greenhouse gas data.

RENEWABLE ENERGY:Since the issue of non-renewable energy looms larger than ever before, and
since the cost of energy is a vital factor for the companys growth, Samsung
Safety & Environment Division monitors and analyzes the impact of renewable
energy on the global energy markets in order to minimize risks and capitalize on
opportunities.

RESPONSE TO WATER SCARCITY &

BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION:-

Samsung Engineering is a total water treatment solution provider, ranging

from wastewater and sewage treatment to deionization. We respond to
water shortages and new regulations on total pollutant loads by
developing technologies to reduce industrial water consumption and
wastewater generation.
Additionally, a great deal of attention has been paid to maintaining
biodiversity. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and

Natural Resources (IUCN) said in a UN report that, due to climate

change, 17,291 endangered species are at serious risk. To protect wildlife,
Samsung Engineering fulfills all reporting requirement prior to the start
of construction and follows all relevant protection guidelines throughout
project execution.
