MRCPI Part II Obstetric & Gynecology Exam Format

The MRCPI Obstetric & Gynecology Degree is perhaps the

most prestigious degree in this field. In previous sessions we
have discussed in detail about MRCPI Exam and its parts plus
its Entry Requirements, however this session is dedicated to
discuss the Exam format of the MRCPI Part II O&G Exam,
which consists of two components which are mentioned below:
1.
2.

Written Exam
OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) &
clinical exam
Lets discuss each component in detail.
The Written Exam
The written paper compromised of the following:
One short essay paper with six mandatory questions wrapping
the topics of obstetrics, gynecology and medical disorders
pertinent to practice in the subject.
A MCQ paper with 60 true/false statements, each with five
options.
It is advised as to perform all questions, as there is no negative
marking in the paper and all statements carry equal weighted so
each question can be performed freely.
The passing marks are set by the examiner for each of the
component of the exam i.e. MCQ and Essay paper, for every
examination arrangement.

Furthermore, once the exam the results are statistically evaluated

in order to evaluate the complete candidates act of that diet.
A triumphant candidate will attain the minimum standard for
each component as defined by the evaluator.
Compensation is functional to borderline candidates only. A
candidate will be measured borderline should their score fall
lower than the set pass mark but inside a permissible range
in either the MTF or the Essays but not both.
The OSCE and Clinical Exam
The OSCE is compromised of a number of stations where each
station consists of 10 minutes having fully communicative
stations. What these stations test is the factual knowledge of the
candidate having skills of problem solving, understanding,
diagnosis investigation, treatment, clinical skills and above all
communication skills.
The Clinical Exam compromised of the presentation and
conversation of one long clinical case in either obstetrics or
gynecology. You are permitted 20 minutes to observe a patient
prior to discussing the case with two examiners.
The primary hub of the OSCE/Clinical Examination is on the
evaluation of clinical skills.
An open-structured marking organization is used right through
the examination, with a constituent of compensation permissible
between the short essay and MCQ components.

It is mandatory to pass the written exam before progressing

towards the OSCE/ Clinical examination.
Marks gained in the written component will not be taken into
relation in the OSCE/Clinical examination.
A pass in both the OSCE and Clinical exam is obligatory.
Any candidate who succeeded the Written and then fails
OSCE/Clinical exam will only require resitting the
OSCE/Clinical component.
The OSCE/Clinical examination should be passed within 2 years
of passing the written examination. Failure to do this will mean
resitting the written exam again.
