Jesus came and stood among them and

said, Peace be with you.Jesus said to
them again, Peace be with youA
week laterJesus came and stood among
them and said, Peace be with you. -John 20:19, 21, 26 (from the Gospel reading for 2 Easter)
Watching the nightly news has become a dreaded act. We are
bombarded with random acts of terror, unprecedented violence on
the streets of our city, genocide and war in the Middle East and
Africa. Peace seems like a dream for fools.
In two post-resurrection appearances within a week, Jesus
greets the disciples three times by saying, Peace be with you.
Jesus must know that the last thing that the disciples are feeling is
peaceful. They have just watched their beloved leader die an agonizing death and have been told by the women that his body is not
in the tomb; instead, Jesus has risen. They are frightened that the
Roman authorities may be interested in arresting and prosecuting
them for sedition, just as they did Jesus. They are sad that their
leader is gone. They are at a loss as to what to do next. In the
midst of their confusion Jesus comes, offering them peace.
In the midst of our confusion Jesus comes, offering us peace.
Jesus doesnt take away the circumstances of our lives. He wont
eliminate the violence, the terrorism, the dis-ease in our world. But
he will provide us peace. In the midst of anxiety, Jesus offers us
his serenity. In the midst of sorrow, Jesus offers us his solace. In
the vortex of chaos, Jesus offers us an island of calm. Jesus Christ
lives in us in peace. Alleluia, alleluia!

Property and Building Update

Our bid was not the one selected for the 4.4-acre site in Eureka. So were moving
on. On March 24, the clergy of St. Francis (Pastor Sally and Deacon Rebecca)
visited potential properties in Eureka with the Diocesan real estate agent. Were
now gathering more information from those site visits.

If youre wondering whats happening, you have 3 ways to find out:

The homepage of St. Francis website, www.stfranciseureka.com, in the section
entitled, Property Update
St. Francis Facebook page postings
Sundays from 9:30-9:55 a.m. Pastor Sally is available to talk at the Lodge

Well use these 3 ways to keep you informed throughout the process of buying property and erecting a building.

April 9th: Book Group

It is not too late to read the book weve chosen for St. Francis next book group selection. The Invention of Wings is the book and it is a terrific book. Based on the
real life story of the two young Grimke sisters whose abolitionist beliefs are completely unwelcome in their slave-owning household, this book presents an honest,
even painful look at the questions of owning human property in the USA well before the civil war.
Written by the popular author of The Secret Life of Bees, Sue Monk Kidd, this story
is told in the voices of the slaves as much as the slave owners. It is richly and powerfully told with some very realistic points of view based on documented memoirs,
letters, and news sources of the day. Please go to Amazon for an excellent, detailed
review. Buy or borrow the book, and come to the Parish House at 6:30 on Thursday,
April 9th. The discussion is bound to be awesome!

Youth Sunday April 12

On Sunday, April 12 our children and teenagers will lead us in worship at
10:15 a.m. Our young people will serve as lectors and torchbearers. We will listen to the Prayers of the People that they have written. And we will watch them
enact the Gospel reading as the sermon.

The Earthy Soul

Ive been thinking lately about rhythms and about the important ways in which
they keep us moving through life at the pace we want to or think we must go. Who
among us has not used peppy music on a radio or an iPod to help us move faster
through our chores? At the gym I see folks on the treadmills and other cardio machines striding, stomping or running to the loud beats of their music of choice, pushing themselves through a self-imposed rhythm to work harder, better, faster. There
are even apps available for serious athletes which will provide music for the iPod
that move at the rhythm the athlete finds best.
Attending to and following a rhythm that I set for myself is one thing. Hearing
and adapting to a given rhythm within a group is another story. That can really be a
struggle! In March our internal rhythms say Its Spring! Its Spring! But Missouris
Mother Nature says, Slow down, dont rush us, Im not ready. Its still winter. On a
less fanciful note, our choir, like most choirs, struggles with keeping exactly the
same rhythm. Sadly, some of us (me) dont read the appointed rhythm and dont
have much of an opinion. But even those who know what theyre reading and understand how to produce the rhythm dont agree exactly with what is intended by the
composer, what will produce the most worshipful sound. Before the group can
move on, it must work through their differences, listen to one another, compromise,
and understand so that together we can make rhythms that call the hearts and souls
of our fellow worshipers.
What about Gods rhythms? If we recognize in ourselves this portion of prayer,
In whom we live and move and have our being, we know that it is the rhythm of
Gods life that we seek, that we need to normalize our own rhythms. I had a colleague long ago who told me that when she awoke in the middle of the night fretting
about the details of some problem at work and could not clear her mind, she would
spoon with her sleeping husband and match her breathing and heart rate to his and
soon she, too, would be asleep again.
Can we match our rhythms to Gods the way my friend did with her husband?
How can we feel Gods rhythm and appropriate it as our own? Here are a few that I
think would work, using Gods creation as a playlist for our internal iPods. Consider these, reject the impossible or unpalatable, and add your own. Then, please, share
your favorite rhythms of God. I would love to hear more.

From the Deacon

The Rev. Rebecca Barger
St. Stephen Archdeacon -- Russian Silk Orthodox Icon

This is an image of one of the icons that sits in my office at the Parish House. It
is of St. Stephen who was one of the first deacons designated by
the disciples to care for the marginalized. It reminds me of this
ministry that I have been called to. I read what the ministry of a
deacon is in the Book of Common Prayer (page 856) and it states
that the ministry of a deacon is to represent Christ and his
Church, particularly as a servant of those in need; and to assist
bishops and priests in the proclamation of the Gospel and the administration of the sacraments.
Deacons are called to a special ministry of service. Each deacons ministry is
uniquely developed and shaped according to ones particular gifts, interests and
strengths. There are currently 16 active deacons in our diocese and no two diaconal
ministries will look alike. Furthermore deacons generally conform in task and ministry to the practices or traditions already established within the context of the parish
in which we are called to serve.
The character of a deacon is nestled into the tasks carried out during the Liturgy.
We are proclaimers, messengers of the good news to the underserved, and are servants in the image of Christ. Everything that we do liturgically reflects our general
ministry in the world. Like all baptized Christians, our ministries are brought into
light by way of our actions and words.
You will see a deacon carrying out five primary functions during the Liturgy.
The Deacon reads the Gospel. We are to be proclaimers or messengers of the
good news.
The Deacon leads or introduces the Prayers of the People. We are called to
bring the needs and concerns of the world to the Church.
The Deacon introduces and leads the Confession of Sin. By initiating this prayer,
not only are we acknowledging our own sin before God, but also confessing our sins
together within community.
The Deacon serves at the Lords Table, preparing and assisting in distribution of
elements. By preparing and serving the Communion meal, we are enacting our call
to servant ministry.
The Deacon announces the dismissal. In essence, the dismissal is the call from
the deacon to the gathered community to go out and engage in bringing the light of
Christ into the life of others.
This is a brief summary of the roles that I do during worship. But in the long run,
its about active service. For me what is important is the bigger picture that includes
all of us working together as the body of Christ. Each one of us is called to teach
and spread the Gospel, and make the love of Christ known through our actions.
In Christs service,

Deacon Rebecca

Kids Korner
Our Childrens Reflections on God and the Gospel
How are we sinners?

Eve and Adam ate from a certain tree and God told them not to.

The Devil is a demon snake.

Explain Psalm 25:6-7, Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and of your steadfast
love, for they have been from of old. Do not remember the sins of my youth or my
transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for your goodness'
sake, O Lord!

He took money out of his moms purse to buy video games.

Maybe the bad guy took money out of his purse, shaved his uni-brow, then
went outside to buy video games.

Why do we baptize in water?

Because its clean. Its clear. Its healthy for you.

Its water. Its water. Its water. I have water.

Why was Jesus not a sinner?

Because of God.

Because of Mary, because she was not a sinner. She was not born with original sin.

Speaking of Ash Wednesday: What do ashes symbolize?

Peace.

Rebirth. I dont know.

If you break a commandment, do you not go to heaven?

Technically, yes. But people can change their behavior.

People need to keep holy the Lords day. And honor thy father and thy mother.

Hospitality after Worship

Are you intimidated by the bounteous feast supplied by those who sign up to
bring hospitality on Sundays? Were changing that. Every 1st Sunday of the
month will be potluck Sunday. Anyone who wants to can bring a dish to share on
1st Sundays. On the other Sundays people will still sign up on the Hospitality calendar, downstairs at the Lodge. But on those Sundays well expect just light
snacks. Doughnuts or bagels will be sufficient. So sign up without fear you
arent committing yourself to supplying a meal.

St. Francis Vision Statement

At the March 22 meeting the Bishops Committee adopted the following as
a vision statement for St. Francis. A vision statement is a description of who we
want to become, who we imagine ourselves to be, 5-10 years from now.
St. Francis Episcopal Church is a growing and inviting community of
Christians known for meaningful worship and faithful service to God, our
neighbors, and each other.

Unbinding the Gospel

Pastor Sally has planned a special Adult Forum program well share in the upcoming
six weeks. The program, based on Unbinding the Gospel by Martha Grace Reece, is
designed to provide comfortable, safe, non-intimidating practice at sharing our own
faith experiences. For many or even most of us, the thought of talking about sharing
our beliefs in words is more than we can imagine: more intimidating, more unpleasant, just more information than we can possibly share. And yet, for many or even
most of us, our everyday actions and interactions are based on the tenets of our faith
in Jesus Christ. We long to share stories of the sacred relationships we have with
those we relate to in everyday life. Why is that so hard for us?
In this adult forum well spend time with one another in a safe, loving environment
exploring ways that we can deepen the connections to God that show in our actions
and begin to talk comfortably in ways that will deepen and share our experiences.
Although the program has been built around this book, no one needs to read it beforehand. If you would particularly like to read it, there are a couple of extra copies
at the Parish House that you can use.

Eureka Food
Pantry Needs
Because of your generosity, the
red wagon for the local Food
Pantry continues to be full-tooverflowing. Many of our neighbors continue to need assistance
getting through each month with
enough food for their families.
Items that are filling and nourishing along with fresh foods that
our abundant St. Francis garden
can provide in the summer are
primary needs.
As always, all non-perishable
foods are welcomed and distributed - from one small can to large
packages. Paper items (tissues,
TP, etc.) and toiletries (soaps,
shampoos, sanitary supplies) are
so helpful as food stamps do not
apply to these. Thank you for
your continued kindness and caring to our community.

The commentary reflects the correction of an inaccuracy in the placement of the line
items for the Growth Initiative-Thompson Fund and Diocesan Grant-Tutoring under
our Income section. In the future, these line items will be listed under Other Income
instead of Diocesan Assistance. While monthly pledge income is lower than projected, the one sizable 2015 pledge that was paid in full in January is still keeping us
well above our budget YTD.

Ministry a la mode:
ST. FRANCIS AND THE EUREKA FOOD PANTRY
St. Francis is known for our many ministries in the community: for our presence
during community celebrations, for our annual pet blessing, for our academic tutoring to help local students, for being one of many congregations who help cook and
feed a hot lunch to those who need it, to care for the Earth with our highway cleanup and our community garden. Those whove known us longest and best can point
to our long-term involvement in the community-wide Eureka Food Pantry.

Each week since our early days at LaSalle the little red wagon stands at the door
of the sanctuary. As we enter for worship, many of our congregation place in the
wagon their contributions to those who are limited in what they can provide to their
families: soup, macaroni &cheese, spaghetti, tomato sauce, canned fruits, vegetables, paper goods for kitchens and baths, even toothbrushes, school supplies and
Easter baskets. The list goes on and on. St. Francis people are mindful of and generous to their neighbors in need. Paddy Wrob, George Vits and Della Hosutt are part
of the multi-church crew who donate their time each month to distribute the food
from St. Francis and all the other churches to the needy who come there.
Since the early days at LaSalle, there has been one face, one quiet voice behind
this ministry. With great persistence, consistency, loyalty and care, Arlene Underwood shuttles our donations to the pantry and, along with Paddy, George and Della,
represents us to staff and clients. Arlene asks about the needs at the pantry and relays any special needs to us. When school is not in session and children do not get
regular meals from school, Arlene lets us know what kind of items will bridge the
gap. When theres a shortage of cereal, spaghetti, or canned fruit, Arlene tells us
about it. The pantry workers are well aware of which essential household items are
not available through public assistance and are therefore much in demand at the pantry. Arlene brings us those needs as well.
Arlene Underwood prefers to keep her ministries in the background, rather than
serving in a leadership role. But with her quiet communication, her gentle reminders, her care and concern for those in need, Arlene has led us to long-term commitment to at least one way in which the people of St. Francis can follow Jesus dictate
to feed the poor.

Recipe of the Month

Spinach & Cheese Strata
By Jennifer Segal, inspired by this strata originally published in Gourmet magazine
Servings: 8-10
Prep Time: 30 Minutes
Cook Time: 75 Minutes
Total Time: 1 Hour 45 Minutes, plus at least one hour to
sit in the fridge
Ingredients
1 pound bag chopped frozen spinach, thawed
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 large yellow onion, chopped (about 2 cups)
3 garlic cloves, minced
12 ounces (3/4 pound) Italian sandwich bread, cut into 1-inch cubes (about 11 slices or
8 cups)
6 ounces (1-1/2 cups) coarsely grated Gruyre
2 ounces (2/3 cup) finely grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
9 large eggs
2-3/4 cups half-and-half
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1-3/4 teaspoons salt
3/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Instructions
Squeeze handfuls of spinach to remove as much liquid as possible.
Melt the butter in a large saut pan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring
frequently, until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and drained spinach and cook 2 minutes more. Set aside.
Butter a 3-quart baking dish. Spread one third of the bread cubes in the dish and top
evenly with one third of spinach mixture. (Try to break it up as much as possible so
there are no huge clumps of spinach.) Sprinkle with one third of each cheese. Repeat
layering twice, ending with cheeses.
In a large bowl, whisk the eggs. Add the half-and-half, Dijon mustard, salt, pepper and
nutmeg and whisk until well combined. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the strata.
Cover the strata with plastic wrap and chill for at least 1 hour or overnight.
Preheat oven to 325F. Bake the strata, uncovered, until puffed, set and golden brown
all over top, 70-75 minutes. Let stand 10-15 minutes before serving.
Note: The cook time is based on the strata going immediately from the fridge to the oven. If it sits out at room temperature before baking, the cook time will be 10-15 minutes
less.

Soul Feast Lenten Study

Thursdays during Lent found a group of St. Francis
members engaged in dialogue , sharing and learning
from one another as we read a book by Marjorie
Thompson, Soul Feast: An Invitation to the Christian
Spiritual Life. Thompsons book offers a look at a
number of spiritual practices (e.g., prayer, fasting,
hospitality) that can enhance our spiritual lives, our
individual and parish relationship with God. Four
members of the group split up preparation and facilitation duties. As one of those facilitators, I have to say that I didnt have much
work to do, since those who participated in any given week were eager to talk
about and listen to others talk on the subject of the evening. The group experience
was so positive that the group members present on the last night asked for additional opportunities for book study throughout the Church year. Watch your announcements and future issues of the Chalice to see what happens next.
