Introduction

On the topic of what is called Morality and Ethics, Islam has got an entire aspect of it
dedicated to discussions on issues that pertain to the above two subject. Needless to
say, much of what Islam is built upon is based on the Quran and thus a close
examination of what is morality in the Quran,has been aptly discussed by author M.A
Draz in his The Moral World of The Quran. The author has identified areas within the
field of Ethical Theory, that can be derived from the Quran. On top of that, the author
has also made comparison of those ethical theories and compared and contrasted them
with other ethical theories, both ancient and modern. Thus the author has provided a
seminal and very enlighening discussion especially if one were to talk about
comparative ethical theories.
In his book, Draz has identified 7 spheres in the discussion on Ethical Theory in the
Quran, and he has devoted a chapter to each. The choice and structuring of those
chapters reflect a natural and logical framework where with the reader can appreciate
and follow the build up of the ethical theory as is to be found in the Quran. By first
discussing Obligations, and then responsibility, followed by santions, and then
Intentions etc, one can get a more wholesome picture of the kind of ethical attitude that
the Quran wants muslims and humanity to have.
In this assignment, the main focus is on the Chapter on Practical Ethics, where after
having discussed the more theoretical content pertaining to ethical philosophy, Draz
compiled verses in the Quran that are of the form of command or order unto Mankind as
to how to be ethical in all the relevant spheres of life such as in family, society and
governance. Quranic verses that are of the prescriptive type (miyari) have been listed in
that chapter, with injunctions that take the form of an order to do something
(commission) and an order to NOT do something (ommission) have been compiled by
the author. The assignment will present some selections from each sub heading in brief,
on top of adding relevant comments and discussions of comparison across similar
works that have been done by other authors.

Conclusion
In Conclusion, one ought to understand and appreciate that the Quran projects its own
view of how Man ought to live this world. The Quran as a source of Divine Guidance
thus has its own integrative and coherent Ethical philosophy, with each aspect in sync
and complements the other, such that the positive outcome is one of a intricately
weaved web of all beautiful elements. This is in line with the fulfillment of the ideal or
purpose for which Man has been created; ie. To Worship Allah and to be His Vicegerent
in this world. It is obvious to any reader that the Quran is wide-ranging in its ethical
injunctions, with verses that deal of governance at the societal level, down to how a
person ought to live his daily life, with regards to matters like interpersonal relations,
etiquette with parents etc.
All in all we see that the Quran has been comprehensive in providing guidelines for an
ethical living and it is hoped that by following those ethical injunctions sincerely, we
become deserving of Mercy and Blessings from Allah.
