What is Chemistry?
The study of matter and the changes it
undergoes.
A science that deal with matter, the
properties of matter, the structure of matter
and the changes in composition that matter
undergoes.
What is Matter ?
Anything that occupies space and has mass.
Gas
Liquid
Gas
Ice
Water
A compound .
A substance composed of atoms of two or more
elements chemically united in fixed proportions.
It can be separated into PURE components
(elements) by Chemical reactions.

elements
An element
A substance that CANNOT be separated into
simpler substances by Chemical reactions.
116 elements have been identified
82 elements occur naturally on Earth
gold, aluminum, lead, oxygen, carbon
What is A Mixture ?
Mixture
Homogeneous mixture
Heterogeneous mixture
Homogenous mixture
composition of the mixture is the same throughout.
Heterogeneous mixture
composition is not uniform throughout.
Magnet
Distillation
based on boiling point
HEAT
Chemical change a change is matter in which one or more
new substance are produced.
It is difficult to reverse.
Examples: cooking, burning, rusting
Unit Of Measurement
Standard units of measurement in chemistry is based on the metric
system, known as the International system, SI
The system is a decimal system of units for measurement of mass,
length, time, volume and other physical properties.
According to the system, Prefixes are used to express larger or
smaller value than the base units and these Prefixes are based on
power of 10

Volume SI derived unit for volume is cubic meter (m )
1 cm3 = (1 x 10-2 m)3 = 1 x 10-6 m3
1 dm3 = (1 x 10-1 m)3 = 1 x 10-3 m3
1 L = 1000 mL = 1000 cm3 = 1 dm3
1 mL = 1 cm3

d= V
Example:
m
d= V
m = d x V = 21.5 g/cm3 x 4.49 cm3 = 96.5 g
If you know ONE conversion for each type of measurement, you can
convert anything!
4.3 cm3 10 mm
1 cm
= 4300 mm3
273 K = 0 0C
373 K = 100 0C
32 0F = 0 0C
212 0F = 100 0C
Example:
5 x (0F 32) = 0C
9
0C = 5 x (0F 32)
9
0C = 5 x (172.9 32) = 78.3

Use of Number
Scientific Notation
Scientific Notation
The number of atoms in 12 g of carbon:
602,200,000,000,000,000,000,000
6.022 x 1023
The mass of a single carbon atom in grams:
0.0000000000000000000000199
1.99 x 10-23
N x 10n
N is a number
between 1 and 10
n is a positive or
negative integer
Scientific Notation

0.00000772
n>0
n<0
Addition or Subtraction
1. Write each quantity with
the same exponent n
2. Combine N1 and N2
3. The exponent, n, remains
the same
Scientific Notation
Multiplication
1. Multiply N1 and N2
2. Add exponents n1 and n2
Division
1. Divide N1 and N2
2. Subtract exponents n1 and n2
SIGNIFICANT
FIGURES
2.
Example:
Mass of object may be written as 15 gram or
15.0 gram
15 gram- is said to have a higher uncertainty as
it may result from 14 to 15.0 gram and therefore
less accurate
15.0 gram - the ".0" tells us something
interesting about the presumed accuracy of the
measurement being made, that the
measurement is accurate to the tenths place,
but that there happen to be zero tenths
Significant Figures
Some simple rules govern the use of significant figures
Any digit that is not zero is significant
1.234 kg
4 significant figures
3 significant figures
Zeros to the left of the first nonzero digit are not significant
0.08 L
1 significant figure
2 significant figures
If a number is less than 1, then only the zeros that are at the
end and in the middle of the number are significant
0.00420 g
3 significant figures
2 significant figures
3001 g
4 significant figures
0.0320 m3
3 significant figures
2 significant figures
560 kg
2 significant figures
Rounding
If you round off to a 5, if the next digit is ODD, round up.
If it is EVEN, LEAVE IT!
3.016 rounded to hundredths is 3.02 (because the next digit (6) is 6 or more)
3.013 rounded to hundredths is 3.01 (because the next digit (3) is 4 or less)
3.015 rounded to hundredths is 3.02 (because the next digit is 5, and the
hundredths digit (1) is odd)
3.045 rounded to hundredths is 3.04 (because the next digit is 5, and the
hundredths digit (4) is even)
3.04501 rounded to hundredths is 3.05 (because the next digit is 5, but it is
followed by non-zero digits)

Exact Numbers
Numbers from definitions or numbers of objects are considered
to have an infinite number of significant figures
The average of three measured lengths; 6.64, 6.68 and 6.70?
6.64 + 6.68 + 6.70
= 6.67333 = 6.67 = 7
