family-friendly events.
The following are upcoming spring-themed and
environmental events:

St. Peter Catholic School students were getting ready for

Holy Week by learning all about Palm Sunday. Many palm
branches were colored and put on the floor to help the students understand Jesus' walk to the cross. Pictured are Sarah

Facts and information about autism spectrum disorder

The following information was taken
from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)
Web site.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a
developmental disability that can cause
significant social, communication and
behavioral challenges. There is often nothing about how people with ASD look that
sets them apart from other people, but people with ASD may communicate, interact,
behave, and learn in ways that are different
from most other people. The learning, thinking, and problem-solving abilities of people
with ASD can range from gifted to severely
challenged. Some people with ASD need a
lot of help in their daily lives; others need
less.
A diagnosis of ASD now includes several conditions that used to be diagnosed separately: autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified
(PDD-NOS), and Asperger syndrome. These
conditions are now all called autism spectrum disorder.

Signs and Symptoms

People with ASD often have problems
with social, emotional, and communication
skills. They might repeat certain behaviors
and might not want change in their daily
activities. Many people with ASD also have
different ways of learning, paying attention,
or reacting to things. Signs of ASD begin
during early childhood and typically last
throughout a persons life.
Children or adults with ASD might:

not point at objects to show interest (for example, not point at an airplane flying over)

not look at objects when another

person points at them

have trouble relating to others or

not have an interest in other people at all

avoid eye contact and want to be

alone

have trouble understanding other

peoples feelings or talking about their own
feelings

prefer not to be held or cuddled,

or might cuddle only when they want to

appear to be unaware when people talk to them, but respond to other sounds

be very interested in people, but

not know how to talk, play, or relate to them

repeat or echo words or phrases

said to them, or repeat words or phrases in
place of normal language

have trouble expressing their

needs using typical words or motions

not play pretend games (for

example, not pretend to feed a doll)

repeat actions over and over

again

have trouble adapting when a routine changes

have unusual reactions to the way

things smell, taste, look, feel, or sound

lose skills they once had (for example, stop saying words they were using)
Diagnosis
Diagnosing ASD can be difficult since
there is no medical test, like a blood test, to
diagnose the disorders. Doctors look at the
childs behavior and development to make a
diagnosis.
ASD can sometimes be detected at 18
months or younger. By age 2, a diagnosis by
an experienced professional can be considered very reliable.1 However, many children
do not receive a final diagnosis until much
older. This delay means that children with
ASD might not get the early help they need.
Treatment
There is currently no cure for ASD.
However, research shows that early intervention treatment services can improve a
childs development.2, 3 Early intervention
services help children from birth to 3 years
old (36 months) learn important skills.
Services can include therapy to help the
child talk, walk, and interact with others.
Therefore, it is important to talk to your
childs doctor as soon as possible if you
think your child has ASD or other developmental problem.
Even if your child has not been diagnosed with an ASD, he or she may be eligible for early intervention treatment services.
The Individuals with Disabilities Education
Act (IDEA) says that children under the age
of 3 years (36 months) who are at risk of
having developmental delays may be eligible for services. These services are provided
through an early intervention system in your
state. Through this system, you can ask for
an evaluation.
In addition, treatment for particular
symptoms, such as speech therapy for lan-

guage delays, often does not need to wait

for a formal ASD diagnosis.
Causes and Risk Factors
We do not know all of the causes of
ASD. However, we have learned that there
are likely many causes for multiple types of
ASD. There may be many different factors
that make a child more likely to have an
ASD, including environmental, biologic and
genetic factors.

Most scientists agree that genes

are one of the risk factors that can make a
person more likely to develop ASD.4

Children who have a sibling with

ASD are at a higher risk of also having ASD.
5-10

ASD tends to occur more often in

people who have certain genetic or chromosomal conditions, such as fragile X syndrome or tuberous sclerosis.11-14

When taken during pregnancy, the

prescription drugs valproic acid and thalidomide have been linked with a higher risk of
ASD.15-16

There is some evidence that the

critical period for developing ASD occurs
before, during, and immediately after birth.
17

Children born to older parents are

at greater risk for having ASD.18
ASD continues to be an important public
health concern. Like the many families living
with ASD, CDC wants to find out what causes the disorder. Understanding the factors
that make a person more likely to develop
ASD will help us learn more about the causes. We are currently working on one of the
largest U.S. studies to date, called Study to
Explore Early Development (SEED). SEED is
looking at many possible risk factors for
ASD, including genetic, environmental, pregnancy, and behavioral factors.

Do you compost? Do you save grass
clippings, leaves, yard waste, kitchen scraps
and more for the compost bin? If so, you
have some really good fertilizer on your
hands, and unlike traditional chemical-based
fertilizers, your compost will not harm the
environment.
Compost is great for top-dressing lawns
two or three times a year. It adds vital nutrients to the lawn, including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. It works fast, doesnt
smell and wont stain concrete or burn the
grass. And, it is easy to apply.
No matter where you live, the best time
to top-dress your lawn is when the grass is
actively growing. If you live in an area with
a cool climate, spring to mid-summer is ideal.
If you live in a warm climate, mid-summer is
ideal.
Top-dressing a lawn with compost is
easy. First, you need to aerate and seed the
lawn. Then, you can apply the compost.
Make sure the compost is finely textured.
This will ensure even raking later. If your
compost is coarse and lumpy, consider purchasing some from a nursery.
Apply the compost on a dry, calm day.
Shovel some around the yard in piles and
then spread it out in a thin layer. When you

Safe, secure and beautiful

Lighting is one of the most important features of a home, indoors and out. It provides
illumination for tasks inside and keeps burglars away outside. When chosen well, lighting can also enhance a homes beauty. Here
are some tips the next time you change or
add to your outdoor lighting.
Outdoor lighting comes in many types.
Post lights are mounted on a post, which is
usually located near the driveway. Wall
lights are mounted on walls near exterior
doorson each side of the garage door, for
example. Ceiling mount lights are mounted
on the ceiling of a porch or portico to illuminate the front entrance. Hanging lights serve
the same purpose as ceiling mount lights but
make more of a statement in grand entrances

and tall porches.

Make a list of the outdoor lights you need
and the amount you have to spend, and then
get ready to shop. Outdoor lights come in a
variety of styles. Look for a style that complements the style of your home. While lanterns
might work well for a beach house, they may
not suit your contemporary home. You might
need a sleeker, cleaner style.
Finish is another aspect to consider.
Again, look to your house as a guide. If you
have a lot of brass, brass fixtures are the way
to go. If you have a lot of ironwork, look for
black fixtures. If you have a lot of chrome,
look for chrome fixtures.
Scale is vital. Too small or too large of

lights can detract from the beauty of your

home. Look for appropriate sized lights. If
you are looking for wall lights for a two-story
home, for example, you should focus on
lights that are 18 to 24 inches tall. Pay attention to the elements in the area where the
lights will go. While you might adore hanging lights, having one in your small portico
might not work. You dont want guests hitting
their head on the light every time they enter
or exit your home.
Want to make your home really glow?
Update the outdoor lighting. Determine your
needs and look for the right style, finish and
scale to create a safe, secure, beautiful
home.

Compost for a better lawn

From page 3
are finished, you should be able to see more
grass than compost. If you dont, you have
spread it too thickly and it could smother the
grass.
Next, water the compost for about 20
minutes or so. Then, leave it be. Give it time
to work its way into the soil, break down and
release vital nutrients. After a week, you

should be able to mow and water your lawn

as usual. Within a few weeks, you should
begin to see some improvement.
Top-dressing your lawn with compost a
few times a year will do it good. You will
have a fuller, greener, healthier lawn. More
importantly, you will make Mother Earth
happy and never have to rely on chemicalbased fertilizers again.

Billboards, newspaper ads, help wanted

Washington County. Yet employers are still
struggling to hire and retain qualified employees.
Thats the question local volunteers have
been working to answer and an informational
meeting will be held on April 9 at Moraine
Park Technical College, Room T120, from 8 to
10 a.m.
In partnership with Washington County
Workforce Alliance, United Way of
Washington County engaged the community
in conversations about employment. Many
employers expressed frustration over high
employee turnover rates. Local human
resources and employment professionals said
many applicants are unable to pass drug
screenings and others just lack specific job
skills.
However, not work ready due to poor
work ethic was identified as the top barrier to
hiring and retaining qualified employees in
Washington County.
Not only are employers having difficulty
hiring, but theres a growing sense of frustration with the quality of the individual who is
coming to apply for a job, said Tom Hostad,
Chair of Washington County Workforce

Alliance and Executive Director of Hartford

Area Development Corporation. In response
to this community-identified need, United Way
of Washington County is issuing a request for
proposals.
United Way will provide special funding
for local programs that develop good work
ethic competencies in youth and young adults.
Examples of work ethic competencies include:
managing time, working in teams, communicating effectively, solving problems, and
embracing personal responsibility. To participate in the initiative, programs must serve
youth and young adults (ages 16- 24) who
are in the target audiences: 1.) individuals
who are not in school nor working 40 hours a
week, or 2.) individuals who are in school or
working part time, but are at risk of being
unable to obtain and retain future employment.
Funding applications are open to nonprofit agencies that provide human services to
Washington County residents, including educational and government entities, and coalitions that include a nonprofit fiscal agent.

employment initiative, or to apply for funding,

FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE

Dear Dr. Winter,

My crowned tooth, #19 has broken to the gum line almost 2
months ago. I have been researching dental implants since my
current dentist doesnt do implants. During this time I learned
about the AAID, which seems to have members serious about
implants. I obtained your name through the AAID American
Academy of Implant Dentistrys website.
I am of course researching price but also products and
procedures. I enclosed a digital x-ray of my broken tooth for you
to evaluate.
Everyplace I've gone to has indicated the need for bone grafting
and then the rest of the implant procedure. I've gone to an oral
surgeon and a periodontal specialist who both leave the crown for
the dentist to complete. I noticed on your website that you do the
surgery and the chimney and crown placement. Can you give me
the products you use and associated fees? Thank you in advance
for your time. K.J.
Dear Kathy, I am sorry you broke your tooth and am happy you
are doing some research to become well informed.
The x-ray you sent only shows me part of the story. I need to see
the opposing tooth, your biting scheme and the width of the bone
that is left around the root. I also need to see your remaining teeth
to make sure they arent having issues.
The answers you have been give are all accurate. Usually we take
the root out and graft the area with bone. This will help preserve
the dimension of bone in the area prior to placement of your
implant. Your insurance, if you have any is usually able to help
with the extraction cost but will often not cover the cost of socket
grafting or implant placement.
The implant, chimney and crown costs depend on the labs we
use and I offer two different implant systems which both work
fabulously if patients are in need of a lesser expensive option.
I use microscopic dental labs that spend a lot of time making
the implant chimney and crown according to my specifications.
Chimneys or abutments can be pre-made sometimes and at other
times a custom abutment may be needed to provide better
contours, support and strength for an implant crown.
If a patient has a budget that will determine what they do we
can make arrangements to use less expensive labs to meet their
needs. The concept of Upgradeable Dentistry that Dr. Winter
lectures about describes how we try and provide the implant
service, denture service or reconstruction service that meets your
budget and your cosmetic needs. There is a difference in what you
receive when you utilize master dental ceramists versus using a
larger volume dental lab.
Without seeing you and evaluating the quality and quantity of
your remaining bone, I can not give you fees but I can offer you
and our readers a complimentary consultation to review your
options with you. We also offer comprehensive examination and x-

ray visits for patients that want to get all costs the day they come
in for their visit. We do offer interest free financing for up to 2
years through Care Credit and we offer I-Care that wont refuse
anyone for credit if they have two forms of debit or credit cards
if they are not eligible for Care Credit.
Please visit my website to see examples of my work and videos
of patient testimonials.
I wish you luck and would be happy to see you for a
complimentary consultation if you wish. I use two different
implant systems; one of them is BioHorizons tapered internal
with Laser Lok technology and the other is MIS Seven implants.
Feel free to visit their websites to learn more about their
technologies.
They are both amazing companies that offer many restorative
options. In this day and age most implant systems work and are
made of high strength titanium alloy. The specifics of implant
design, surface coating, crestal implant design are all features
your dentist should be able to discuss with you if you ask.
I do not speak for the AAID and do not give opinions on their
behalf. I simply have stated what I do in my practice. I am board
certified in Implant Dentistry by the American Board of Oral
Implantologists/Implant Dentists through that organization.
You may call our office to schedule a visit at 414-464-9021 and
mention you spoke to me via e-mail for a special consideration.
Yours for better dentistry,

Riverkeeper clean upvarious
locations:
Milwaukee Riverkeepers 2015 Spring
River Cleanup Project will take place
Saturday, April 25, 9 a.m. to noon. For this
20-year event, thousands of volunteers
show up at different locations throughout
the Milwaukee River Basin to give the body
of water a spring clean up.

Riverkeeper Cheryl Nenn described the

event that attracts over 3,000 helpers as
one of the largest volunteer events in the
state.
Area locations are:
* Northern WatershedJackson Park in
the Town of Jackson. Meet at Jackson Park
Community Center, N165W20290
Hickory Lane.
* Northern WatershedLime Kiln Park
in Grafton. Meet at the top parking lot in
Lime Kiln Park, 2020 Green Bay Rd.
* Northern WatershedRiver Hill Park
in Kewaskum. Meet at the pavilion building
in River Hill Park, 1200 Parkview Drive.
* Northern WatershedRotary Park in
Menomonee Falls. Meet by the pavilion

at www.milwaukeeriverkeeper.org.
Roots and Branches:
Roots and Branches (formerly the West
Bend Beautification Committee) will hold its
annual Cleanup Greenup event Saturday,
May 2, 9 a.m. to noon. Participants will
meet at Regner Park, get a bag and be
assigned to one of the countys 20-plus
parks for a morning of picking up litter.
This is a rite of passage for spring,
said Shirley Decker, executive director of
the organization. The volunteers come, get
gloves and a bag and off they go to clean
up the parks.
This year Roots and Branches is encouraging area youth organizations to participate both for earning credit for their respective clubs and for the horizon-broadening
experience.
This is a real learning opportunity for
the youth, said Decker. Through this they
can get a real sense of being aware of litter
and the importance of cleaning up after
themselves in our citys parks.
Treats and prizes would be provided,
Decker said.
For more information or to pre-register
for the clean-up event, call the Roots and
Branches office at (262) 335-5083 or
show up the day of the event.
