EED520/05 Guide to Manage Education Project Paper

Preface
This Guide to Manage Education Project (EED 520/05) is developed to assist all School of
Education, Languages & Communications students and Project Supervisors in managing the
education project paper.
This Guide includes important information relating to the requirements, conduct and
responsibilities in successfully executing relevant research and documenting its execution in
the education project paper.

It should be thoroughly read by all students and Project

Supervisors since it provides important information and guidelines on the management of

the Project Course.
As necessary, additional information and educational resources for students and Project
Supervisors will be made available on the Universitys e-learning portal called the
WawasanLearn (LMS). In this regard, all students and Project Supervisors are required to
constantly visit the LMS for updates on this course.

1.0 Introduction
The EED520/05 Education Project Paper is a capstone course of the M. Ed programme and
is essentially an independent study to be undertaken by students on an educational issue
related to their specialisation.
As the Project Course carries 5 credits, a workload of 200 hours is expected to be
undertaken by students for this course. To ensure that students are able to successfully
complete the project paper, students are required to have passed the following prerequisites
prior to registering for EED520/05 Education Project paper:

EED 501/05 Research in Education

3 courses in the relevant area of specialisation.

Once the student has enrolled in the EED520/05 Education Project Paper, he/she will be
assigned a suitable Project Supervisor who has the necessary knowledge and competency
to guide the student and facilitate the completion of the project paper. A suitable topic (and
area of research) will be chosen based on mutual agreement between the student and
project supervisor. The student is expected to work closely with the Project Supervisor
during the duration of preparing and completing the project paper.
The aim of the Project Supervisory system is to ensure that students are given effective and
regular academic and supervisory support on a personal basis in order for them to complete
their Project Course with Wawasan Open University (WOU) successfully.

2.0 Objective of the Education Project Paper

The main objective of the Project Course is to help students develop and demonstrate the
ability to apply multidisciplinary or inter-disciplinary concepts, tools and techniques which
they have acquired during the duration of their studies to produce a project paper that
addresses critical issues in their area of specialisation substantiated with relevant and valid
research processes.

3.0 Requirements for Enrolling EED520/05 Education Project Paper

Students will be allowed to enrol for the Project Course provided they have fulfilled the
following conditions (a) and (b) at the point of registration:
a) Students have passed EED 501/05 Research in Education course.
b) Students have passed 3 of the courses in their area of specialisation.
Observance of these prerequisites is important to ensure they would have the required
knowledge and competency to do an independent research and produce a valid and reliable
research report.

4.0 General Framework of Project Supervision

Project Supervisor is responsible for supervising and providing relevant advice and guidance
to students in executing the research and subsequently completing the education project
paper.
The Project Supervisor is the students primary point of contact, and he/she will be appointed
and assigned by the University. The appointment of the supervisors will be coordinated by
the Project Coordinator.
Students will make the first contact (advisable through telephone) with their Project
Supervisor, within three days of the supervisor being assigned to the student. The student is
advised to introduce themselves and to make arrangement to have an initial discussion
about the proposed topic. Supervisors are to ensure that the chosen topic of research should
be appropriate to these courses taken by the students. Subsequent discussion with the
supervisor and peers could be held via WawasanLearn (LMS).
In general, students may expect about at least 10-20 hours of discussion time (face-to-face,
LMS, telephone, etc.) in total from their Project Supervisors.
All students and Project Supervisors are strongly advised to maintain regular contact with
the Course Coordinator on matters related to supervising for the Project course. Kindly
access the LMS for the contact details of your Course Coordinator.
Additional support will be provided via WawasanLearn (LMS). It is important that you check
the LMS regularly for any updates/information about the Course during the semester.

5.0 Project Supervisors Responsibility

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my family and friends for all the emotional
and financial support provided to me as it is their support which was instrumental in
encouraging me to reach the end of this journey. During my studies, there were times
when work commitments and other challenges that made me believe that I would not be
able to see this journey through. It was during these times words of encouragement from
my family and friends gave me the necessary motivation to persist. No words of thanks
can adequately express the depth of my appreciation and gratitude.

I would also like to personally thank my supervisor .. for providing me all the
guidance required to successfully complete this research report. His encouragement,
support, understanding and, above all, his prompt, constructive and greatly appreciated
criticism and feedback, were invaluable to the research, writing and completion of this
report.
