Seneca lacrosse takes on Lenape

A very busy schedule

cant keep 11-year-old
Aydan Barrett from
winning piano award
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun

SEAN LAJOIE/The Sun

Aydan Barrett of Shamong is a

student first and an athlete second, according to his father
Bryan, but he still finds time to
excel in music.
Aydan also has quite the sense
of humor.
When
picking an instrument,
I
chose
the
piano because
we have one in
our house and
somebody
needs to play
it! he said.
BARRETT
Aydan
began playing
the piano at the age of 4 and recently competed in the National
Federation of Music South Jersey
Junior Arts Festival where he
won his second gold cup in seven
years.

Kevin Gray looks for room to maneuver as the Seneca High School boys lacrosse team took on Lenape High School. Seneca fell to
Lenape, 6-5. For more photos, please see page 11.

YMCA Swim Safe

program begins April 8
According to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention,
drowning is the second-leading
cause of unintentional death for
children under the age of 14. To
improve the safety of children in
and around the water, the YMCA
of Burlington and Camden Counties is holding a free Swim Safe
program at the Burlington-Riverfront YMCA on Wednesday, April
8 from 12:30 to 4 p.m.
Open to children ages 6-12,
Swim Safe prepares children by
teaching basic swimming and
water safety skills and increasing
self-confidence and security
while near the water.
For the second consecutive
year, Swim Safe is being support-

ed by the Rotary Clubs of

Burlington,
Medford-Vincentown, Mount Holly and Willingboro.
Learning to swim is not only a
great way for kids to stay healthy
its also a critical safety skill,
said Tim Kerrihard, president
and CEO of the YMCA of
Burlington and Camden Counties. We encourage area children
to take advantage of this free program.
Registration is required as
spots are limited. For more information, please contact Megan
Neckelmann, assistant director of
aquatics
at
megann@ymcabc.org.

The Seneca High School Class
of 2018 likes to have some fun
while it raises money.
On Tuesday, March 31, the
main gym played host to a Cornhole/KanJam tournament. One
hundred and eight students came
ready to compete, sporting their
Golden Eagle pride with their
outfits.
We have a series of different
tournaments. We play dodgeball
and volleyball as well, said Jay
Donoghue, who was in charge of
the event.
The student government for
the freshman class got together to
formulate the idea for the event.
It is something they have been
planning since January, so they
were able to get a hold of numerous Cornhole boards and Kan-

Stay local this summer

The message may be old, but its worth repeating, even if it is only early April

Dan McDonough Jr.

chairman of elauwit media

e seem to often preach how

important it is to stay local
for the summertime. And
thats because its true. The 102 days
between Memorial Day and Labor Day
weekends are crucial for the Jersey
Shore, which, no matter where you
live in our fine state, has a vital impact
on our economy.
The devastation that was caused by
Hurricane Sandy seems like a distant
memory, but some Shore towns are
still fighting to fully recover. Those
that have recovered still desperately
need visitors; they still need our support.
Beach Season 2013, the one immediately following Sandy, was not a good
one. As if rebuilding from Sandy wasnt bad enough, an incredibly wet June
kept visitors away from the Shore dur-

ing prime weekends. Sales for stores

that year in the hardest-hit areas were
off anywhere from 20-40 percent, according to state economic reports. Gov.
Christies office estimated companies
lost more than $63 million in business
due to the storm.
Last year got a little better, but it
wasnt back to pre-storm numbers. A
Tourism Economics report, presented
by the state Division of Travel and
Tourism, found that visitors to the
Shore rose 4.4 percent statewide last
year, but spending didnt keep pace, in-

creasing only 3.7 percent. Direct

tourism employment fell 1.3 percent,
the first time it declined since 2010, but
that was mainly due to hard times in
Atlantic City.
So whats the message here? Its simple: Visit the Shore this summer, visit
often, and spend money there.
New Jersey residents often take our
coastline for granted, but we should
realize how lucky we are to have such
a gem this close to home. So lets pay it
back this summer. As hard as it may
seem to fathom, there are only six
weeks until the official start of the
summer beach season, but there is
still plenty of time to plan your summer vacation at the Jersey Shore.
The beach towns need your support.
Lets all dedicate at least part of our
summer to giving back.

Winston Churchill
Volunteer Recognition Day is on April
20, and The Sun wants to highlight your
volunteerism stories.
Are you a volunteer? Tell us all about it!
We want to know where you volunteer and

why you got involved. Do you have a particularly special anecdote from a volunteer
event? Whether you take part in an annual
volunteer effort, volunteer every week or
have traveled the world to help others, The
Sun wants to publish your story.
We would also love to hear from volunteer organizations, those non-profits that
depend on volunteers to get by day-to-day.

Do you have a special volunteer you would

like to acknowledge? Let us know.
Whatever your story, were calling on
you to send it in so we can share it with
everyone. Send in your volunteer story, and
a photo of you or your volunteers hard at
work, to our news email, which is listed to
the right. Watch for your stories in an upcoming issue of The Sun.

They decided to split the contestants

into 27 teams of four to make the tournaments run more smoothly.

We thought it would be most beneficial
to play games like this that everyone could
enjoy, Donoghue said.
We also wanted to bring a laid back,

beach theme to the event.

The total earnings will provide a nice
boost for things such as their junior dinner
dance, senior trip or anywhere else that it
is needed.

Aydan started playing

piano when he was 4
AYDAN
Continued from page 1
In addition to piano, Aydan
does drama, swimming and plays
soccer, lacrosse, baseball and basketball.
Though it can be difficult at
times with school and all his
other activities, Aydan shoots to
practice each day for 20 minutes.
He often practices at home,
and we also bring him to his instructor once a week for lessons,
Barrett said. We found Cathy
Daub through a couple people
and have been very pleased with
her work, as she has produced
multiple gold cup students.
Aydan typically competes
about once a year in larger competitions that include an array of
towns.
He has performed at the
South Jersey National Music Federation and other South Jersey
music clubs like Jacobs Music in
Cherry Hill, Barrett said.
Aydan views his piano career

OPEN 6 DAYS

as something useful and relaxing

he can do on the side in addition
to his sports and education.
I dont really ever get nervous
before I compete, Aydan said.
He admitted to his first gold
cup being his favorite memory
from his piano career thus far because it was something he had
never done before.
Aydans
younger
brother
Logan also plays piano. It is something he seemed to pick up on his
own, not necessarily being encouraged by his older brother.
He competed in this years National Federation of Music South
Jersey Junior Arts Festival as
well. Logan was able to come
home with a state trophy for performing more than three pieces
in one year.
He has been playing the piano
for two years now and is also into
sports like his older brother. In
addition, Logan is also a part of
Cub Scout Pack 47 in Shamong.
Both brothers attend St. Mary
of the Lakes School and plan to
focus more on their athletics
down the road in high school.

BCC offers free computer workshops

After similar sessions filled to
capacity last semester, Burlington
County College is offering free
computer workshops to help residents improve their digital literacy through its Service-Learning
and Computer Information Systems programs.
There are separate sessions all
held at the TEC building, room
317 on the Mount Laurel campus.
Residents can select as many as
they like on a first-come, firstserved basis:
Web Security, noon to 1:30
p.m., Wednesday, April 8
Systems Administration, 10
a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Friday, April 10
A basic understanding of computer skills is as necessary as
learning your ABCs to excel in
the modern workforce, said
Burlington County Freeholder
Director Mary Ann OBrien.
These free computer workshops
are a great addition to the
Burlington County Workforce Initiative that will provide all of our
residents with the skills they
need to advance their careers.
Residents can learn more and
register for one or more of the
seminars at www.bcc.edu/service-learning.

Computing has become an essential part of our daily lives and

Burlington County College is dedicated to helping all residents
navigate in this digital world,
said Burlington County College
President Paul Drayton Jr.
Burlington County College students can help you learn more
about how to use technology safely and effectively. Let our students
teach you techniques you will use
every day.
The interactive, hands-on seminars will be led by students in
BCCs Computer Information
Systems.
All community members, no
matter their experience with
computers, can learn directly
from Burlington County College
students as part of our ServiceLearning initiative, Bridging the
Digital Divide, which aims to improve safe computer skills
throughout the community, said
BCC Service-Learning Coordinator Erica Franklin. With a perfect price, these seminars fill up

quickly.
The sessions cover maintaining and troubleshooting your
computer, web tools and security
of your computers and mobile devices.
BCC recently announced a new
associates degree program, information assurance and cybersecurity, to train workers who are
skilled in thwarting the increasing threat of hackers. More information about the new program
can
be
found
at
www.bcc.edu/news/new-degreeprogram-cybersecurity.
Nearly every day there is another security breach that shows
how important it is to be aware of
the threat hackers pose to personal data and information, said
Science, Math and Technology
Lecturer Dr. Berna Dike Anyiam.
The more you learn about computers and computer safety, the
more basic steps you will be able
to take to protect yourself, your
personal information and your finances.
