For SOI ASIA BUSINESS PLAN CONTEST 2014
(Participants Manual)
1) Background
Below are the issues faced by student when they created their business plan for action purposes:
I) Unclear about self competencies

Student have limited experience


However, they possessed relevant or hidden competency
Students do not write what past experience ->relevant to the competency for the
business plan

II) Unclear about action with plan

Students overstate 5 years beautiful plan


but not realistic about they want to do after plan
Do not know what support they need

III) Unclear about what resources can be feasible and explorability

Student did not describe unique or inimitable resource


Students may not be alert with internal and external resources, select, utilise to
configure the resource

The current SOI Asia Business Contest criteria (Fig 1.1) could not help to answer the above
problem.

Thus, it gives rise to the design and creation of Internal Capability (Fig 1.2) of the organisation
as the new criteria of the contest

2. Definition of Internal Capability :


Ability of Organisation to utilize compatible task competencies, ; access and configure resources
from internal and external environment, in order to create short term feasible plan at early
startup stage.

Activity Timeline and Resource Support (TRS)

Refers to the ability of management team to create most immediate and feasible action
plan, with the consideration of support from internal and external sources accessible by
them.
The greater the inclusion of various resources from internal and external sources, the
more feasible would be the action related to the business plan
It will be reveal the incubation needs that is also relevant for the supporters, eg board
members, incubation managers etc

Task and competencies Compatibility (TCC)


Refers to the ability combine past experience which can be translated into track records
with tangible outcome, and the relevance to the task needed to action of the business
process
The greater compatibility between the competencies of management with the
task assignment , the higher the internal capability

III) Resource Valuation and Configuration (RVC)

Refers to the ability to identify key resources, determine the resource origin, duration of
resource accessibility, change the resource usage, in order to plan for the actionable
business activities
Resources can be from Internal sources (eg University) or external resources
(Soi Asia, Government, Private sector)
The valuation of resources can be based on rare, inimitable, first right of use etc
The higher the ability to plan for access and configure the resources, the higher the
Internal capability
