Exercises
Exercise 6
Breaking Some Rules
Until now, our chord progressions have all been diatonic. This next exercise allows you to
experience a different approach to non diatonic chord progressions.

Write a series of major triads not restricted to the C diatonic scale. One chord per measure.
Start on the C major Triad and end on the C major triad... all other chords can be major chords
from any key.
Write the name of the chord underneath the chord Ie., Cmaj, Ab Maj, etc.
The root movement from the second to last chord to the last chord should be down in fifths to
establish key.
Post a recording of your result with a screen shot.

Exercise 7
Repeat the same exercise as exercise 6 but this time use minor triads only.
Start on c minor and end on c minor. The second to last chord should build a plagal cadence in c
minor.
Post a recording of your result with a screen shot.

Exercise 8
Mixed Progressions
Combine the rules explored thus far. Compose a chord progression that uses both the rules up on
seconds, down in thirds, down in fifths
along with moving to any chord of the same quality... major to major, minor to minor.
If you are feeling adventurous, consider altering your inversions to make for smoother voice
leading.
Post a recording of your result with a screen shot.

Exercise 9
You are provided a melody. Type it into finale.
Harmonize the melody according to the following guidelines:
To harmonize a melody, you must find chords that contain the melody tones while meeting the
requirements for chordal progressions.
As your melodies get more complicated, you will have to determine what tones are harmonic and
which ones are not. More on that later.
Harmonize this melody.

Provide the alphabetical chord name used under each chord you write.
Post a recording of your result with a screen shot.

Exercise 10
You will be given two notes per measure. Both notes must be in the chord that you choose. You
will be forces to use non diatonic chords. Remember the rules
provided earlier. (Please note: Within traditional harmonic compositions, the three standard root

movements are most often used. Non diatonic root movement usually
will be defined as tonicization, the use of borrowed chords or secondary dominants.)

Exercise 11
Compose a melody based on the given chord progression.
Use only tones that are members of the chord. ( No non harmonic tones yet)
Quarter and half notes only

Exercise 12
Review the rules for non harmonic tones
Using the following chord progression, compose a melody that uses chord tones and the Passing
Tone only.
Quarter and half notes only
Post a recording of your result with a screen shot.

Exercise 13
Repeat as before but this time use chord tones and neighboring tones only
Quarter and half notes only
Feel free to have the chords written on a second staff so that you can hear the tensions created
by the non harmonic tones.
Post a recording of your result with a screen shot.

Exercise 14
Repeat as before but this time use chord tones and anticipations only
Quarter and half notes only

Feel free to have the chords written on a second staff so that you can hear the tensions created
by the non harmonic tones.
Post a recording of your result with a screen shot.

Exercise 15
Using the melody below, harmonize it with one or two chords per measure. Chords with a + are
non harmonic and do not need to be harmonized.
Create TWO versions with a different progression for each version. Listen carefully to how the
melody sounds different when harmonized differently.
