Beliefs, values and ideology are at the heart of organisations.

Individuals hold
certain ideas and value-preferences which influence how they behave and how
they view the behaviour of other members. These norms become shared
traditions which are communicated within the group and are reinforced by
symbols and ritual.

Hofstedes Model of Organisational Culture : case of IIT Roorkee

It is made of 3 layers around a core. The core stands for the values of a certain
culture, which is not moving a lot. It mostly remains the same. Even if something seems
to be outdated, it still can subconsciously play a role in the present. That includes
individuals as well as groups

Symbols
Symbols are the most overt element of culture and are the gestures,
objects or words recognised by those who are part of the same
organisational culture .Symbols carry a particular meaning within a
culture.

Heroes
Heroes are individuals who are seen to possess characteristics that are
highly prised and are often the winners in an organisation. They serve as
models of behaviour within a particular organisation .

Rituals(riti -riwaz)
Rituals are collective activities that are superfluous but are considered
socially essential within a culture. Symbols, heroes and rituals can be
termed as practices because they are visible to the observer .
Cognizance
COGNIZANCE is a vibrant technical festival was initiated in 2003, with an aim of providing
opportunities to the student community to exercise its academic acumen and ingenuity and
become a hub for ground-breaking ideas and solutions. Various managerial events are organised
by DOMS.
Thomso
THOMSO is a cultural festival held annually at IIT Roorkee. It is not only the largest youth festival
of Uttarakhand but also one of the largest youth festivals of India. It has about 5000-6000 college
students from all over India in attendance apart from around 5000 students of IIT Roorkee itself.
i- Fest
The online festival of computer geeks, i-Fest takes place after the early days of the mid-term
exams in the Autumn Semester. Organized primarily under the domain of IEEE, which is a
society for the whole ECE junta, i-Fest sees a lot of participation from all over the country.
Sangram , the annual sports festival
Three day long sports extravaganza of IIT Roorkee. Provides an ideal platform for all the brilliant
sports persons from the technical institutes in India to assemble and exhibit their sports skill ,
exemplary devotion and latent organizational qualities .

Values
Hofstede stipulates that the core of culture is formed by values, which are
broad tendencies to prefer certain states to others and are the deepest
level of culture .
