Both the Mahanyasa and Laghunyasa are very large collection of

mantras. Please purcahse the book titled "saswara Mahanyasa mantrah"

published by Sri Ramakrshna Mission, in various vernacular
languages.
There are two versions of the Mahanyasa: "Ravanokta" - given to the
mankind by Ravana (of the Ramayana epic) and "BauDhayana" given by
the sage Baudhayana. The former is more popular and tantric in
nature.
I strongly advice you to purchase the Mahanyasa audio cassette
rendered by Sri Srinivasa Ghanapthigal and one more vidwan, produced
in Tamil Nadu. I shall provide you with the exact details in my next
posting.

There are so many answers to this question based on what you are trying to accom
plish.
Based on your questions, I am guessing that, like most of us, you also don't
have much exposure to the karma kanda. Performing rudrabhisheka will confer grea
t benefits,
but you will need to learn the procedure from a qualified teacher. Until you are
able to do so,
you can perform a simple panchopachara puja to Lord Shiva:
1)
e.
2)
3)
4)
5)
ke

dhuupam aaghraapayaami. - vayu tattwa. offer incense.
diipam darshayaami. - agni tattwa. offer a lamp (aarti).
naivedyam nivedayaami. - jala tattwa. offer some naivedyam li

As a part of (just before) step 2, where you are offering flowers, pray to the f
ive faces of shiva,
which once again represents the 5 tattwas:

2)
3)
4)
5)

aghoraaya namah. ( dakshiNa-mukhaaya namah ). - agni tattwa

vaamadevaaya namah. ( uttara-mukhaaya namah ). - jala tattwa
iishaanaaya namah. ( uurdhva-mukhaaya namah. ) - akasha tattwa

This should be simple to do. As you learn more, you can easily make it more elab
orate, by adding
abhisheka, or pancha kalasha puja, or japa etc. These will have to be learnt fro
m a qualified teacher.

In Krishna Yajurveda Taittareeya Samhitha in 7 Cantos there are 44 Prasnams. The
re are 2198 panchatees in this Samhitha. The total padams are 1,09,308.
A chapter called NAMAKAM is available in 4th Canto 5th Prasna. In 11 Anuvakams t
here are 27 panchatees containing 1234 padams ( Padam is one word and a Panchate
e means a group of 50 words).

8th Anuvakam contain SIVA PANCHAKSHARI Mantra

Nama Sivaya . When one chants this ma
ntra with pranavam and Sakthi Beejakshari Mantra Hreem

E RUDRAYA it is called Rudra Dasaakshari mantra.
Namakam and Chamakam chapters put together is called Sri Rudram/Sata Rudreeyam/R
udra Upanishad etc.
2) Mahanyasam:
For each mantra there is a Devatha, Rishi, Chandas, and Viniyogam. Invoking of r
espective Devatha/Rishi for any particular mantra is a must. Similarly the purpo
se for which the particular Mantra is being used also should be stated before ch
anting the mantra.(Viniyogam)
Thereafter Kara Nyasam, Anganyasam, are followed by Lagu Nyasam, or MAHANYASAM (
Contain more than 100 Nyasams) By Nyasa we are invoking respective devathas and
preparing ourselves to be eligible to do the Pooja.
(The mahanyasa was codified by the great sage Bodhayana. The famed Appayya Diksh
ita is said to have included it in his nitya panchayatana puja. It requires abou
t an hour.)
Bhootha Sudhi is achieved by doing Nyasa. In Nyasa we attempt to control our Ind
riyas and surrender the same to the mind. Then the mind to the Aathma. Finally s
urrender our Aathma to the Brahmmam . After all Nyasams and invocations are over we
seek from the God to return all Indriyas mind etc that we have surrendered to H
im to perform Lords Pooja.
3) Benefits:
By chanting a portion of the Veda Mantras one can attain purity of soul/mind on
that day. Whereas one who chant Sri Rudram could attain the same immediately. Th
us States Yaksha-Yama Dharma.
By Chanting Sri Rudram one could get relief from all sins,
relief from all diseases, apart from required wealth, mental peace, long, health
y, happy life etc. Thus states Rishi Bodhayana.
Sri Rudram is considered
bove that for removal of
poverty and for getting
y etc. Sri Rudra Upasana

as essence of all Upanishads. It can be seen from the a

Satru Baadha, other evil effects, diseases, apamruthyu,
all purusharthas, peace of mind, happiness, family unit
is essential.

By completing Maha Nyasa before commencement of the Pooja One becomes Siva himse
lf and get all eligibility to conduct the pooja.
Many methods of Nyasas are in vogue as per different Desa/Kala aacharas. They ar
e as prescribed by Rishi Bodhayana, Saataatapa Rishi,in Maharnavam of Maantaada, R
avanoktham etc.
4) Methods of Chanting:
a) There are five methods of chanting Rudra viz.,

i) Ordinary method where first Rudram is read and then Chamakam. (Namakam and Ch
amakam together when chanted once is called Roopam.)
ii) Rudra Ekadasini:
Rudra ekadasini where after chanting Rudram, the first anuvaaka of Chamakam is c
hanted, again after chanting Rudram the second anuvaaka of Chamakam is chanted a
nd so on till the eleventh chanting of Rudram followed by eleventh anuvaaka of C
hamakam.
iii) Eleven such Rudra ekadasinis makes one Laghu Rudram
iv) Eleven such Laghu Rudrams makes one Maha Rudram and
v) Eleven such Maha Rudrams make one Athi rudram.
b) SriRudra Ekadasini or Ekadesa Rudra Japam:
SriRudra Ekadasini (MAHAPRAYASCHITHA KARMA), that is usually performed prior to
Shashtiabdapurthi, Sathabishekam etc.
Ekadasa Rudram, Maha Rudram and Athi Rudram are performed in temples, for propit
iating the Gods for common good.

Salutations and adorations to the blissful Lord Siva, the lover of Uma or Parvat
i, the Lord of all beings (Pasupati).
Alankarapriyo Vishnuh, Abhishekapriyah Sivah Lord Vishnu is very fond of Alankara (
fine dress, beautiful ornaments, etc.); Siva is fond of Abhisheka. In Siva temple
s, a pot made up of copper or brass with a hole in the centre is kept hanging ov
er the image or Linga of Siva, and water is falling on the image throughout day
and night. Pouring over the Linga, water, milk, ghee, curd, honey, cocoanut wate
r, Panchamrita, etc., is Abhisheka. Abhisheka is done for Lord Siva. Rudra is ch
anted along with the Abhisheka. Lord Siva is propitiated by Abhisheka.
Lord Siva drank the poison that emanated from the ocean and wore the Ganga and m
oon on His head to cool His head. He has the fiery third eye. Constant Abhisheka
cools this eye.
The greatest and the highest Abhisheka is to pour the waters of pure love on the
Atmalinga of the lotus of the heart. The external Abhisheka with various object
s will help the growth of devotion and adoration for Lord Siva and eventually le

ad to internal Abhisheka with pure abundant flow of love.

Abhisheka is a part of Siva Puja. Without Abhisheka, worship of Siva is incomple
te. During Abhisheka Rudra, Purushasukta, Chamaka, Maha-mrityunjaya Japa, etc.,
are chanted in a particular rhythm and order. Monday is very important day for L
ord Siva and the thirteenth day of the fortnight (Pradosha) is very sacred. On t
hese days, devotees of Siva worship Him with special Puja, Abhisheka with Ekadas
a-Rudra, Archana, offering plenty of Prasad, and illumination.
In Ekadasa-Rudra Abhisheka, every Rudra is chanted with distinctive articles for
Abhisheka. Ganga water, milk, ghee, honey, rose-water, cocoanut water, sandal p
aste, Panchamrita, scented oil, sugarcane juice and lime juice are made use of f
or Abhisheka. After every Abhisheka, pure water is poured over the head of Siva.
When Rudra is repeated once, the different articles of Abhisheka are made use o
f after every stanza of the Rudra. The Abhisheka water or other articles used fo
r Abhisheka are considered very sacred and bestow immense benefits on the devote
es who take it as the Lord s Prasad. It purifies the heart and destroys countless
sins. You must take it with intense Bhava and faith.
When you do Abhisheka with Bhava and devotion, your mind is concentrated. Your h
eart is filled with the image of the Lord and divine thoughts. You forget your b
ody and its relation and surroundings. Egoism gradually vanishes. When there is
forgetfulness, you begin to enjoy and taste the eternal bliss of Lord Siva. Reci
tation of Rudra or Om Namassivaya purifies the mind and fills it with Sattva.
If you do Abhisheka with Rudrapatha in the name of a person suffering from any d
isease he will be soon freed from that disease. Incurable diseases are cured by
Abhisheka. Abhisheka bestows health, wealth, prosperity, progeny, etc. Abhisheka
on Monday is most auspicious.
By offering Panchamrita, honey, milk, etc., to the Lord, thoughts of your body d
iminish. Selfishness slowly vanishes. You derive immense joy. You begin to incre
ase your offerings unto the Lord. Therefore, self-sacrifice and self-surrender c
ome in. Naturally, there is an outpouring from your heart, I am Thine, my Lord. A
ll is Thine, my Lord .
Kannappa Nayanar, a great devotee of Lord Siva, a hunter by profession, did Abhi
sheka with the water in his mouth for the Linga at Kalahasti in South India and
propitiated Lord Siva. Lord Siva is pleased by pure devotion. It is the mental B
hava that counts and not the outward show. Lord Siva said to the temple priest: T
his water from the mouth of Kannappa, my beloved devotee, is more pure than the
water of the Ganga .
A devotee should be regular in doing Abhisheka for the Lord. He should get by he
art Rudra and Chamakam. Ekadasa Rudra is more powerful and effective. In Norther
n India, every man or woman takes a lota of water and pours it on the image of S
iva. This also causes beneficial results and brings about the fulfilment of one s
desire. Abhisheka on Sivaratri day is very effective.
May you all recite Rudrapatha which describes the glory of Lord Siva and His man
ifestations in every living being, in every animate and inanimate being! May you
do Abhisheka daily and thus obtain the grace of Lord Siva! May Lord Visvanatha
bless you all!
