ROTARY FILTER

AIM:
To determine

(i)

Specific cake resistance

(ii)

Filter medium resistance

by using the given leaf around the rotating filter for 3% by weight of CaCO3 slurry.
INTRODUCTION:
Filtration is the removal particles from a fluid by passing the fluid through
a filtering medium, or septum on which the solids are deposited. The fluid may be a liquid or a
gas, the valuable stream from the filter may be the fluid or the solid or both. Fluid flows through
a filter medium by virtue of a pressure differential across the medium. Rotary filter is a
discontinuous pressure filter. It can be operated either under positive pressure or vacuum.

PROCEDURE :
1. Prepare 3% by weight of calcium carbonate slurry i.e., 120 gm of CaCO 3 in 4 liters of water,
in the given vessel.
2. Lower the rotating drum filter into the vessel and continuously agitate slurry by an agitator at
low speed.
3. Apply approximately 100 mm suction to the outlet pipe by adjusting the valve and observe
commencement of filtration.
4. Start the stop watch when filtrate is at zero level in receiver.
5.Note down the time for every 2 centimeter rise of the filtrate in the receiver.
6.After complete filtration, release the vacuum and switch off the suction pump. Collect some
of the filter cake in the watch glass.
7.Weigh the wet filter cake. Dry it and weigh the dry cake.
8.Carry out the above steps at an increase level of suction at 150 mm Hg.
