Maharaj explains the difference
between a civilisation based on karma and a
life of bhakti.

civilisation. The whole civilisation is
Deception and
rotten to its core. In the civilisation of

exploitation people exploit nature for the

with interest. Yet they do not believe

thisthey do not believe they will have
to clear their debt to nature. Still it is
there, as is the calculation of their debt,
like calculations recorded in a computer.
So this civilisation is no civilisation; it is anti-civilisation. The whole thing is
rotten. It is a camouflage-like deception; a treachery to the souls world, to the
living world. The whole civilisation is a suicidal treachery.
Plain living, high thinking. Make the best of a bad bargain. These
should be our policies. Somehow we have come here; now we are to use our
time and energy in such a way that with the least amount of exploitation we

can get out of this world. The real solution for our life has been given
in Bhagavad-gita.
yajrtht karmao nyatra loko ya karma-bandhana
(Srimad Bhagavad-gita: 3.9)
[The Lord says:] Karma, spending your energy here, will surely bind you
within this material environment. Yajnarthat, only if you act in the spirit of
yajna, sacrifice, will you be relieved of the reactions to your actions. What
sort of sacrifice? Not sacrifice for the sake of yourself, or your country, or your
society. Nothing less
than sacrifice for the sake
of the Infinite, that is,
Myself, Vishnu.
Yajna vai Vishnu. Hari,
the Supreme Lord, is
Yajneshvar, the rightful
enjoyer of all sacrifices,
the absolute owner of
everything. You must
have a proper connection
with Him. Not an
imaginary
connection,
but a real connection you
must have with Him, then the reactions to whatever you do will not bind
whatsoever.
hatvpi sa imn lokn na hanti na nibadhyate
(Srimad Bhagavad-gita: 18.17)
There is even a plane in which, if we stand there, we can destroy many
planets, many universes, but remain unaffected. Na hanti na nibadhyate, a pure
agent of the Absolute neither kills nor has to suffer any reaction for his
actions. If someone who has exhaustively eliminated all selfish thinking

walks, where does he get his inspiration? Where does his inspiration come
from? The Centre, the Absolute. The Centre inspires him to act, and then he
acts. So, no matter what a cent per cent agent of the Absolute centre does, he
does not have to undergo any reaction to his actions, whatever their nature
may be.
yajrtht karmao nyatra loko ya karma-bandhana
tad-artha karma kaunteya mukta-saga samchara
(Srimad Bhagavad-gita: 3.9)
[The Lord says:] Do, and do it for Me.
karmay evdhikras te m phaleu kadchana
(Srimad Bhagavad-gita: 2.47)
You are created only to work; you are not created to enjoy the fruits of
work. Your constitutional position is that you are to work. You are a potency.
Your duty is to exercise your power. But the results of your work are Mine.
aha hi sarva-yajn bhokt cha prabhur eva cha
(Srimad Bhagavad-gita: 9.24)
So dont look at the results of your activities. Simply do everything that is
imposed on you; do your duty. Go on acting, with a sense of duty. A doer
should never sit idle. Idleness is your greatest enemy.
m te sago stv akarmai
(Srimad Bhagavad-gita: 2.47)
I am afraid that you may have some apathy to activity. If so, then you are
doomedyou are gone to the world of annihilation, renunciation,
inconclusiveness, and destruction. Ma te sango, You should work for Me. That
is your position and Mine. Dont be afraid of that. Why should you be? I am
your friend; I am your guardian; I am your well-wisher. Everything is in My
control. I am the enjoyer of everything, but you are My own, you are My
friend. So you must not be apprehensive about your future in any way. It

wont be hampered. Rather, it will be improved when it is in My hand. So
have no apprehension. Go on, and work on My behalf. If you live that way,
if you observe that policy, you will be best benefitted.
In other words, you should intelligently use Me for your good. That is the
best type of intelligence.
r kkari cha s
(Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu: Purva-vibhaga, 1.17)
ktv hari prema-bhja
(Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu: Purva-vibhaga, 1.41)
This is the extraordinary power of devotion: devotion can convert the
Autocrat, the Supreme Lord, into the loving friend of anyone who takes to the
path of devotion. Devotion has such wonderful power: it can make Hari, the
Absolute Good, loving and affectionate towards you. It can force the Lord to
favour you, to befriend you, to act in your favour. This is the capacity of
devotion, svarup-shakti prem. The highest stage of devotion, prema, is so
powerful. Such extraordinary power is in her hand that she can force the
Autocrat to work on the behalf of His beloved servants.
Kritva harim prema-bhajam, this is the natural fortune we have. If you march
on in pursuit of mastership over the world, then the demon of the reactions to
your actions will come, break your neck, and drink your blood, but bhakti,
she can put the Infinite at your hand, bring Him within your fist.
Gauraharibol.

Kahit ano

pa ang dumating sa ating

ibigay parin natin ito kay
Krsna.
Estudyante:
Nagpapahiwatig na po
siya. Malamang alam na
niya.
Srila Sridhar Maharaj:
Oo, alam niya. Nooy may
Ganunpaman, magpatuloy parin tayo.

Question: How does actual service to Krishna (Krishna-seva) happen?

Answer: Actual service to Krishna (Krishna-seva) happens only through the service of
Krishnas devotees, viz. Guru and Vaishnav. Sahajiyas are not able to understand this.
They think, One who worships Krishna (directly), he is the greatest and thus they
consider themselves Vaishnavs, take service from others and themselves abandon the
service of Guru andVaishnav. However, one who has heard the teachings of Sri
Chaitanyadev and the Goswamis knows that truly truly the service of Krishna (Krishnaseva) happens only through the service of Krishnas devotees, viz. Guru and Vaishnava.
Those who abandon the service and guidance of the sadhus and Sri Guru(SadhuGuru-seva and anugatya) and feign the service of Krishna (Krishna-seva) and the service
of the holy Name (Nam-bhajan), make offences (aparadha) with every step they take.

Sri Gaudiya Darshan Philippines

Whenever one is making offence (aparadha), they are not chanting the holy Name of
Krishna (Krishna-nam)or engaging in the service of Krishna (Krishna-seva). On the
contrary, all surrendered devotees who proceed under the guidance
of Guru andVaishnav and serve them (practice Guru-Vaishnav anugatya and seva) (in
truth) serve Krishna and chant the holy Name of Krishna, by the mercy ofGuru and
Krishna. Only those who serve Krishnas devotees, viz. Guruand Vaishnav with faith
and affectionate love (adara and priti) receive the mercy of Sri Chaitanyadev and the
Goswamis.
(At the time) when my conception was, I am a greatly learned in mathematic
scriptures, I am greatly learned in philosophical scriptures, by good fortune I obtained
the association (darshan) of Sri Gurudev. When he then struck down my great
truthfulness, my pure, ethical life, my scholarship, and so forth, knowing them to be
trifling, I understood, I cannot conceive how great this personality is who can strike
down (all) my great virtues! By him striking me down, I was able to understand,
There is no one so lowly or abominable as me; this is my nature. This great soul
(mahatma) is not attributing any value to scholarship, ethical character, and any of the
things I am considering to be supremely desirable. Then I understood, Such
invaluable things must be present within this great personality! Then I considered,
Either he is extremely merciful or he is extremely egotistical (ahankari). Then I humbly
prayed to the Lord for mercy. Thereafter, by the mercy of the Lord, I was able to
understand that apart from the mercy and service of this type of great personality who
is devoid of desire for anything of this world (Nishkinchan Maha-purush) there is no
other road towards my welfare. When I properly understood in this way, I then
received the shelter and abounding mercy of Sri Gurudev and thus became fulfilled.
Through the strike I have received from Sri Gurudev, I have understood that if the
people of this world are not struck down in the same way, they will not become
conscious, their proper awareness will not come about. So I am saying to everyone, I
am the greatest fool; among all the people present in this world, I am the greatest fool;
you all should not be a fool like me, you all should not remain absorbed in calculative
(illusory) subjects, (but rather) you all should enter into subjects of the spiritual world
(Vaikunthakatha), (then) you will become great personalities. I am speaking to you all
the good words of he whom, by the mercy of the Lord, I have understood to be the
supreme good (param-mangal)Sri Gurudev.

One day, a doctor, very anxiously desiring to stay in the holy dhama of Navadvipa and serve the
Lord, came and revealed his intentions to Srila Gaurakisora. The young devotee had made arrangements
to remain in the holy dhama as a doctor and treat sick persons. He planned to beg from the residents of
Navadvipa, and with the profit, buy medicine. He would then be able to give free medical treatment. He
considered that in this way he would perform his bhajana and at the same time perform the highest
welfare activity for the community. To confirm his plans, he went to get the advice of Srila Gaurakisora.
When he arrived and presented his proposal, he quoted the following verses spoken by Murari Gupta in
the Caitanya-caritamrta: (Adi Lila 10:50-51):
pratigraha nahi kare, na laya kara' dhana
atma-vrtti kari' kare kutumba bharana
cikitsa karena yare haiya sadaya
deha-roga, bhava-roga, dui tara' ksaya
"Srila Murari Gupta never accepted charity from his friends, nor did he accept money from anyone. He
practiced being a physician and maintained his family with his earnings. As Murari Gupta treated his
patients, by his mercy, both their bodily and spiritual diseases ceased." Srila Gaurakisora could
understand the restless nature of the doctor and his inner motives for wanting to live in the holy dhama for
his so-called devotional service. Srila Gaurakisora made this very evident to him when he explained,
"Murari Gupta is an eternal associate of Lord Caitanya, and always lives in the transcendental world of
Navadvipa Dhama. He never suggested any intentions of living in the Supreme Lord's holy dhama by
supporting himself through some clever means to materially enjoy there. He never supported his family at
the expense of any temple, nor was he ever interested in earning money to keep his belly full. He would
never accept charity or wealth from his friends or others. He was a direct storehouse of love of Godhead,
and by his mercy, anyone would obtain the mercy of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Whomever he treated would
become cured from all disease and obtain loving affection unto the Supreme Lord. If one does not follow
his exemplary lifestyle, but imitates his activities for sense indulgence in the name of pure bhajana, then
one must eternally suffer the miseries found in the diseased state of material existence.
"You are a patient suffering from the disease of material existence. How can you properly cure
others? Crying, you must seriously pray for the mercy of Srila Murari Gupta. Then you will be able to
understand what is the actual benefit for others. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu simply taught that one should
seriously chant the holy names of Lord Krsna. Anything contrary to that is less intelligent. Just give up
your bad intelligence and begin the process of hearing and chanting the glories of the Supreme Lord. If
someone performs devotional service with other intentions, everything will be lost, including service to
the holy name. Administering free medical treatment for worldly prestige and living in the holy dhama
have nothing in common. A person who wants to enjoy the fruits of his activities can never actually live
in the holy dhama."
Hearing the instruction of Srila Gaurakisora, the doctor asked, "Then what is my duty?" Srila
Gaurakisora replied, "If you actually want to live in the holy dhama, you should first completely give up
this idea you are entertaining. Abandon the misconception that benefiting materialistic persons by
distributing free medical treatment is favorable for your worship. Any services you offer, or any religious
practice which is not in connection with saintly persons who are factually performing bhajana, will be the
cause of deep material bondage. As of now, it would be better if you returned home and chanted the holy
name and maintained your livelihood. If this is what you really want then go home. Don't deceitfully
maintain yourself in the holy abode of Navadvipa by some clever means."
