INTRODUCTION

Did you ever heard about BIM? Did you know BIM stand for what? BIM is stands for
Building Information Modeling. BIM is as a digital role of physical that was created to fulfill the
functions characteristic of facilities as well as to get or share some knowledge to each other.
Mostly people do not know BIM is not Computer-aided design (CAD). The fact is the
presentation of BIM is more complex and gave us a better visualization of design than CAD.
Initially, building information modeling born after doing some improvement into computeraided design tools. So that, it will provided best performance to the user. The software will create
a three dimensional (3D) which is structure, systems and properties of element of a building in a
database. Many professions such as construction manager, architect, subcontractor and engineer
are enables to share the model of BIM to each other. Then below is a telling comparison between
CAD and BIM and the advantages BIM to the field of profession.

COMPARISON BETWEEN COMPUTER AIDED- DESIGN (CAD) AND BUILDING

INFORMATION MODELING (BIM)

1) How this two software define the quality of building. CAD is not like BIM. CAD use
many type of different document usually 2D for definite the quality of building. Based on
CAD document, it did not relate into each other and raising the possibility the
coordination of information. BIM is an intelligent system because it can centralize all the
information and document without any problem. Why? It is because BIM can bring out
all the information and document and put it on single fail.
2) BIM is not only 3D modeling but BIM be able to produce drawing that had contained
information about geometry, complementing the implementation of the project. 3D
modeling also can preview the isometric and virtual view. Different with CAD, that be
used to design curves and figure in 2D and solid in 3D

3) BIM system had automatic configurable schedules that make have the information all the
time and we can do allocation about cost, materials and quality for better planning. This
is because BIM software has created the properties such as height, width, load bearing
capacity, interior or exterior and materials that are integrated. So, it can be describe as a
building while CAD can do an unspecific project lines such as draws lines through points
and arcs.

4) How about the Real-time Project edit by CAD? CAD can manage the changes that
introduce by a CAD user for making some modification that relate to the project. They
should take cares the documents that relate in a process want to make the introduction.
BIM models are more tightly than CAD models so it requires more modification of any
size that have to do to relate the project.

THE ADVANTAGES OF BIM IN THE FIELD OF PROFESSION

1) Architecture
BIM help the architects become competitive with surrounding that had increasing
complex business. The architect will be able to predict the structure of building before the
construction started. By using BIM, architect can do correct the error or create something
new and it will produced increasing profits. The user also satisfied the commitment that
had be given.
2) Construction Manager
BIM help the construction manager make a plan for coordination, drawing approval,
transportation and installation. The construction manager have to make sure that material
use have a available time to be installed. They can uses BIM software which is 4D model.

3) Subcontractors

They are persons that sign a contract to perform some of or whole thing on another
contract. They are person that introduced new work process that allowed you to
coordinated system in complex construction environment. BIM allow the subcontractor
to virtually design and best thing is it is not just an improvement but it is a new way of
working.
4) Engineer
An engineer use BIM to generate the data by improving communication, reducing risk,
and protect the data until it access by a stakeholders. BIM also can make an engineer
communicate with planning tools, facilities management and cost packages.

CONCLUSION
BIM is not similar to CAD software. BIM needed to use integration of many program and
project. BIM need many practices and it is already use by many field of profession to facilitate
their work. BIM give many beneficial to construction industry. BIM make the project become
real and more efficient. In other words, BIM save time and cost and make the product become
better quality construction.
