Ash Cloud

Ash Cloud Pantone 7544 C this

cool grey evokes the towering cloud
that drifted over Europe. Its calm
exterior masks the chaos caused by the
grounding of aircraft and the awesome
power of the volcanos eruption.

Air travel was significantly disrupted in April and again in May

by the volcanic eruption of Mount Eyjafjallajkull in Iceland,
which began on 14th April. The eruption itself was small, but
it formed a gigantic cloud of ash, which rose nine kilometres
into the sky. Atmospheric winds allowed the cloud to drift
over large parts of mainland Europe resulting in a complete
shutdown of the affected airspace for a period of five days.
This was the biggest disruption in air travel since World War
II as the high levels of silica in the cloud are highly damaging
to aircraft engines, causing them to fail. The chaos caused
by the cancellation of flights lead to thousands of travellers
being stranded and losses of millions of pounds to the
airline industry.

Coalition

Coalition Pantone 534 C a political

blue, the colour of the Conservative Party
and their vision of The Big Society. But
in this palette where is the yellow of the
Liberal Democrats? That question has yet
to be answered.

After weeks of campaigning by the three main political

parties the people of Britain went to the polls for a General
Election on May 6th. None of the parties won the number
of seats in parliament necessary to win an overall majority,
resulting in a hung parliament. In the days following the
result Gordon Brown resigned as the leader of the Labour
Party and there was a brief attempt to create a Labour/
Liberal Democrat coalition. However this was still not
enough to create a majority. After several days of talks with
the Liberal Democrats, David Cameron, the Leader of the
Conservative party became the new Prime Minister and
Leader of the first coalition government in the UK to directly
result from an election.

World Cup Pantone 7404 C this

vibrant hue captures the excitement and
dynamism of the tournament and the
colours of the host nation. It also reminds
us of the colour of many of the much
talked about vuvuzelas, made famous
around the world by the event.

The 2010 World Cup opened on June 11th in Johannesburg

in South Africa, the first time an African nation had hosted
the finals. Thirty-two teams competed in 64 matches, to see
Spain defeat the Netherlands 1-0 in extra time to win the
tournament. England was knocked out in a 4-1 defeat by
Germany in the second round, their worst performance in a
World Cup. Overall the tournament was viewed as a success
despite accusations beforehand that the government had
evicted residents and cleared slums near to the stadiums in
an attempt to clean-up the areas.

Popes Visit

Popes Visit Pantone 656 C

reflects peacefulness and the cool white
of the Popes robes. It evokes a purity and
holiness, but like the Church it cannot
hide dark secrets forever.

The first Papal visit to Britain since 1982 saw Pope Benedict
tour Britain for six days. The run up to the visit had been
mired in controversy by claims that the Pope should not be
given a state visit, calls for his arrest by Richard Dawkins
for his involvement in the cover-up of child sex abuse within
the Catholic Church and comments by a senior aide to
the Pope describing Britain as like a third world country.
There were complaints about the cost to the UK taxpayer of
security for the visit and that tickets to the open air masses
were too expensive. Despite this thousands turned out to
see the Pope as he visited London, Edinburgh, Glasgow
and Birmingham.

WikiLeaks

WikiLeaks Pantone 7443 C has an

air of transparency to it, echoing the
transparency of governments WikiLeaks
tried to enforce. But at the same time
it represents a degree of opacity that
surrounds the organisation and its
founder Julian Assange.

WikiLeaks made the headlines on a number of occasions,

releasing a video of a US army helicopter shooting civilians
in Afghanistan in April. In July it then went on to release what
has become know as the Afghan War Logs, a set of classified
military documents about operations in Afghanistan, some
of which suggest war crimes. It followed in November with
the release of thousands of American diplomatic cables,
revealing comments, which have embarrassed a number of
high profile officials and leaders. WikiLeaks founder, Julian
Assange is currently under house arrest in England, fighting
an extradition to Sweden where he is wanted for charges
of sexual assault.
