Unit 1 Assignment Tiaira Walls

Unit 1 Assignment
Describe the moral dilemma identify the competing rights and how these
make it a moral dilemma.
An example of a right-versus-right moral dilemma from my past would be based on
both rules-based and care-based thinking. My first job ever was when I was 16 and
it was working part time for a local McDonalds. Even thought I was young I was
promoted to an assistant manager very quickly. A friend of mines also started
working at McDonalds at the same time that I did. We became even closer
spending nights working at McDonalds together. Since we were both in high school
we pretty much had the same hours which meant we were able to walk home and
catch rides home together since our neighborhoods were close. When I got
promoted my friend was also up for the job but didnt receive it, because I did. I
found out later the reason why I received the job and not she was because I was
overall a better leader, communicator and quick learner. Not to mention I was
always on time. My manager told me there was really no competition and that she
had to let my friend go. How do I tell a friend why she was not selected for a job,
and that she might get fired? The reason that my friend may get fired was because
she was constantly late for work. The manager asked me if I could to talk to my
friend and tell her why she didnt get hired but not that she may get fired which put
me in a rough situation because I didnt want to seem like I was boasting or
withholding information. Telling her that basically the reason she didnt get the job
was because I was well better than her and there was no competition could cost me
a friend if she takes it the wrong way. Keeping the information that she may get
fired could get me into trouble, but if I didnt tell I could lose a friend. I ended up
talking to my friend she took it hard for a while; I never told her that I knew she

might get fired though. Regardless of the choice that I made the values in conflict
were both right. The moral dilemma in this case is the emotional conflict that I
have with my professional obligations and empathizing with my friend who not only
didnt get the job but could get fired. If I would have chosen to disclose the fact that
she could get fired, it could have jeopardized my job or made my boss reconsider
giving me that promotion. I emphasized with my friend because she too wanted the
job. I have always been told to treat people how I want to be treated. So normally I
would have just told my friend everything. A right versus right situation occurs
when one is faced with an urgent and intricate situation that makes you make
choices about your integrity and moral character (Badaracco Jr., 2009). I know this
seems like a weird example of right versus right but its the closest thing I can think
of in comparison. In my opinion my friend had the right to know that she may get
fired and that she was skating on thin ice, along with knowing why she didnt get
the promotion. But I had no right to tell her anything about you future position at
the job due to my moral conflict.
Describe the model, from this weeks reading, you will use to make a
decision and why you selected it
I made my decision through the reading Right vs. Right. I was faced with protecting
my job and promotion and disclosing confidential information (possible loss of job)
and sympathizing with my friend. I had to choose between integrity and moral
character this is a clear right vs. right.
Share the decision you made and how you made it
The decision I made was right vs. right. The Rights approach is the third ethical
approach from our readings and is based on human rights and dignity of every
individual (Werhane, 1994). My moral obligation is to my boss. As a new manager I

must honor my boss and personal agreements. It is important for anyone to practice
good ethics in business and it is important that I and anyone else in situations
similar to mines honor all legally binding documents despite personal emotions. If it
wasnt for my new position I probably would have just told my friend everything but
in this case sometimes client information may conflict with personal morals.
Reflect on your learning, as a leader and as a person, by applying the
learning from this week to a work or personal application
This weeks assignment can be applied in my personal and work life but most
importantly my personal life. As a manager I would have to learn to keep certain
information to myself and keep those certain boundaries between friends. I no
longer have the ability to just say whatever pops into my head I have keep a clear
shoulder and remember that my legal obligations (keeping certain facts and
information about the job, employeesetc.) to myself even when I empathize with
others I have to keep my job and ethics in mind first. As professionals in business
we must make ethical choices and abide by the laws set before us even in my
personal when we have sensitive information that is not mines to disclose such as
my friends possible job loss. I would rather have to choose between integrity and
moral character. I have a hard time trying to sleep at night if I know that I am in the
wrong or that I am guilty of something. I tend to live my life in a way that makes me
think to myself how I would feel if the shoe was on the other foot. Some of the
implications for me to personally/professionally addressing right versus right
scenario some of the implications that I could have faced was a loss of a good friend
or disappointing/making my manager rethink about giving me the promotion,
maybe even a loss of job. In life we have to pick and choose what information we
want to disclose to others and how were going to react in different scenarios. With

this scenario some of the implications that I could have faced was a loss of a good
friend or disappointing/making my manager rethink about giving me the promotion.
The thoughts in regard to morality are to merely comprehend the truths, as in
defining the authentic moral principles and opinions of persons (Goodpaster, 1983).
