Tabanan, Bali (ANTARA News) -- Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman has expressed
hope that domestic farm products will be able to meet national needs, and that the country will
no longer need to import farm commodities in the future."I praise the Tabanan district
administration in Bali for achieving self-reliance in food production, with the availability of farm
products exceeding local peoples needs," the minister said during a working visit in Tabanan
district on Thursday. He noted that as the Tabanan district government had continued to step up
the development of its agricultural sector, the district had managed to meet local peoples food

"Dont delay in planting rice; dont leave land unused; and dont let the community sleep. Let us
build this nation till it makes progress at a global level," he remarked.Sulaiman also expressed
hope that farmers would always be enthusiastic and consistent in developing the agricultural
sector as a means to earn a living, as well as to motivate younger generations to strive towards
improving the industry. This way, the district, which is known as the "rice barn" of Bali province,
will be able to take optimum advantage of the huge potential the agricultural sector presents, he
affirmed.
During the course of the visit, the minister also handed over 24 tractors, water pumps, and Rp10
billion as funds to improve the irrigation networks in Tabanan district. Moreover, District Head
of Tabanan Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, in her address read out by District Secretary Nyoman Wirna
Ariwangsa, stated that despite being the "rice barn" of the province, Tanaban still faced
constraints and obstacles related to infrastructure development, and that it still needed assistance
from the central government.Wiryastuti added that the district had managed to maintain its rice
production of 111 thousand tons, which made it the largest rice producer in Bali. With local rice
consumption reaching 56 thousand tons, the district recorded a surplus of 55 thousand tons.

A north Delta institution dedicated to excellence in agricultural research and education, serving
area and Mid-South farmers thats the Fisher Delta Research Center (FDRC) at Portageville,
Mo.It is the largest of Missouris 19 off-campus agricultural centers, farms and forests, operating
within the University of Missouris College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources and the
MU Agriculture Experiment Station.Unlike the rest of Missouri, Bootheel agriculture more
closely resembles that of Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas and Tennessee.
Our area which possesses some of the worlds most productive farmland forms the
northern tip of the Mississippi River Delta, says Trent Haggard, FDRC director. Our 15
different soil types and research on crops, including corn, cotton, rice and soybeans, enable us to
serve Southeast Missouri, the Mid-South and the rest of the country.Haggard says a major
strength of the FDRC is its research team, which has done, and continues to do, the research that
growers need today, and will need tomorrow. We can handle the unique and diverse scope of
what encompasses Bootheel agriculture, he says.

Silent Shade Planting Co. uses 21 different software programs to help make sure the farming
operation stays at the forefront of agricultural technology, according to Jeremy Jack, one of the
partners in the 8,500-acre cotton, corn, soybean, rice and wheat farm.Running all those programs
and trying to get them to communicate with each other is a challenge, but its one Jeremy Jack;
his sister, Stacie Jack-Koger; and her husband, Trey Koger, are willing to take on for the sake of
their operation near Belzoni, Miss. When you think about it, if youre early adopters youre the
first ones in the game, says Jeremy Jack.
Youre the ones who are going to reap the biggest rewards out of it. Youre also the ones with
the biggest risks.Jeremy Jacks comments came during a presentation at the National
Conservation Systems Cotton and Rice Conference in Baton Rouge, La. He was one of more
than 120 farmers, consultants, university Extension specialists and researchers and industry
representatives who spoke during the two-day event that rotates between the North and South
Deltas.
These are what we call the hammers in our office toolbox, said Jack, pointing to a slide.
These are all the precision software programs that were using every day. These are actually
owned by three or four of us. From the financial side to moving dirt to recordkeeping on crops to
making our prescription maps, this is what we go through. The most troublesome for Jack is the
Excel program, which he repeated three times in the list of the 21 programs he displayed. But the
problem with all these programs is that none of them talk to each other, he noted.I went on our
server, typed in xls and hit search to see how many excel files I have right now, how many we go
through, how many weve used, he said. 1,250.
How much time does it take to do all these things; how much downtime and how slow are we
moving toward integrating this information.Jack says all of the partners software enhancement
efforts start with Global Positioning Systems or GPS. GPS is the foundation, not the roof. Dont
think that is the end or the cure-all. All those things I went through build off GPS.Currently,
Silent Shades operators can perform a variety of digital tasks, including recordkeeping,
monitoring, imagery, efficiency, tracking and everything with variable rate.Jack gave

we focus on these issues in particular because we think they are the biggest barriers that prevent
people from making the most of their lives," the Gates earlier wrote, explaining the foundation's
