1.a) Write down 5 examples of each of binomial variable, Poisson variable and
normal variable. Under what conditions a binomial variable transforms to Poisson
variable ? How would you decide that a continuous variable would follow normal
distribution ? Write down the characteristics of normal distribution. What are the
shape characteristics of Poisson distribution and exponential distribution ? Write
down an example of exponential distribution. What are the values of 1 and 2
of Poisson, normal and exponential distribution ?
b) Given E( X ) = V ( X ) = 4, where X is a discrete random variable; write
down the probability function of X and comment on the shape characteristic of
the distribution. Also , find P ( X 2 ) , P ( 1 X < 4 ) , P ( X > 3 )
c) Given E ( X ) = 4 , V ( X ) = 16, where X is a continuous random variable ;
write down the probability density function of X and comment on the shape
characteristic of the distribution. Also, find P ( X 2 ) and P ( 1 < X 4 ) , P
(X 2).
d) Given f ( x ) = e x , x > 0 and f (x ) = e x , 0, x 0 ; write down the
values of mean, variance, 1 , 2 and comment. Also, find P ( X 2 ) and P

e) Given E ( X ) = 4, V ( X ) = 2 ; write down the probability function of X,

f) Given E ( X ) = 4 , V ( X ) = 3 ; Write down the probability function of X ,
where

2. Eighty per cent devices of a workshop work properly. One day 10 devices are selected
at random . Find the probability that , out of 10 devices , ( i ) all work properly , ( ii ) at
best 2 work properly , ( iii ) at least 3 work properly . Ans. : ( i ) 0.1073 ( ii ) 0.000078 ,
( iii ) 0.99992 .
What are expected number of devices and variance of the number of devices which work
properly ? Ans. : 8.0 and 1.6 , respectively .
3. A group of students are equally well trained to develop a program and all of them have
50 % chance to develop the program successfully . Ten students are selected at random
and they are asked to develop the program separately . Find the probability that ( i ) none
becomes successful,
( ii ) five become successful , ( iii ) at least 2 become successful , Ans : ( i ) 0.00098 ,( ii )

( iii ) 0.9893 .
What are expected number and variance of number of students who become successful ?
Ans. : 5 and 2.5 , respectively .
4. Two per cent mobile sets produced by a company are usually found defective . The
company produces 200 sets per day . Find the probability that in a days production there
will be ( i ) 4

If the production is observed for a week , what is the probability that in 3 days there will

5 .The average number of signals sent from a station is 3 per day which do not reach

If 10 bulbs are observed at random , what is the probability that the life length of 6 bulbs

7. The consumption of electricity per day ( in MW ) follows N ( 3800 , 45000 ) . Find the
probability that in a randomly selected day the consumption ( i ) exceeds 4500 MW , ( ii )
is less than 3700 MW , ( iii ) is between 3500 MW to 4200 MW . Ans . ( i ) 0.0005 , ( ii )

If the consumption is observed for a week , what is the probability that it will be between

8. The average time needed to open a computer is 2 minutes . Find the probability that a

If a man is in queue for half - an hour , what is the probability that he will be able to

If a customer is in queue for 1 hour , what is the probability that his set will be repaired

b) The random variable X follows Rayleigh distribution, where mode of the distribution
is 0.25 . Find the probability that the value of X will be i ) more than , (ii ) less than
1/3 , ( iii ) between 1/3 to .
10. Write down some examples of stochastic process , Markov process , counting process
and Poisson process . Under what conditions a stochastic process becomes Markov
process and counting process ; a counting process becomes Poisson process ? What are
the mean and variance of the distribution of waiting time ?
11. Customers enter to a mobile repairing shop from 9 10 and from 10 11 with
probability 0.6 . Customers also enter to the shop from 10 11 but not from 9 10 with
probability 0.8 . Find the probability that the customers will enter to the mobile repairing
up to 2 PM stating from 9. Ans. 0.66656 .

12. E.mails enter to a cyber caf after several stages . An e.mail sent from a station
reaches to the next stage with probability 0.4 . Find the probability that an e.mail sent
from cyber cafe reaches to another cyber caf to the address at 5th stage . Ans. 0.5008 .
13. E. mails enter to a cyber caf at a Poisson rate = 2 per minute . Find the probability
that the elapsed time between the entrance of 10th and 11th mail is ( i ) more than 1 minute

14. Define sampling and simple random sampling with example . Show , by an example ,
that mean of simple random sample is an unbiased estimate of population mean ; sample
variance is an unbiased estimate of population variance .

These are selected from the record of a year .
Estimate average number of miss calls received per day along with the standard error of
the estimate of average . Also, estimate the total number of miss calls along with its
standard error .
