NATIONALS NEWS

OPPONENT

ABOUT LAST NIGHT

The Nationals dropped the rubber match of their season-opening series with the New York Mets,
6-3...The Nationals were 12-4 in rubber games in 2014 (6-1 in D.C., 6-3 on the road) but begin
2015 0-1.

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
The Nationals and Phillies play 19 times this season (10 in D.C., 9 in Philadelphia)...OF Jayson Werth (2007-10) is the only member of the Nationals 40-man
roster who has seen both sides of this rivalry... In four seasons with PHI, Werth
hit .282 with 99 doubles, 95 homers, 300 RBI, 60 stolen bases and one World
Championship ring (2008)...Nationals hitting coach Rick Schu played primarily
third base and hit .250 with 24 home runs and 79 RBI in parts of five seasons
(1984-87, 1991) with the Phillies.

TAKE IT FROM THE TOP

Entrusted with the leadoff spot in CF Denard Spans absence (core muscle surgery), Nationals
OF Michael A. Taylor has come out of the gates strong...In three games, Taylor is 4-for-13 (.308)
with two doubles, two RBI and six stolen bases...The 2014 Double-A Eastern League Rookie of
the Year is the only rookie in the National League who has tallied four hits to date.
COMING OUT HOT
April has been very good to Nationals RF Bryce Harper over the course of his career...In 53
April/March games (218 PA), Harper has a .321 AVG, .394 OBP and .580 SLG...That includes 11
doubles, three triples and 11 home runs.
Though only three games, 2015 appears to be no exception: Harper is 4-for-11 (.364), 1 HR.
CAPITAL PUNISHERS
With a two-run home run Wednesday night vs. NYM, Nationals 1B Ryan Zimmerman passed
Roy Sievers to become the second-most prolific home run hitter in Washingtons storied baseball history (80+ seasons from 1901-71 and 2005-present)...A closer look at those to hit the most
home runs while representing the Nations Capital:

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

With three games at home to open the 2015 season, the Nationals began a campaign at home
for the sixth time in their 11 seasons...The Nationals have played to a 301-267 record at home
since Nationals Park opened its doors in 2008, including posting winning records at home for the
last five seasons (since 2010).
The Nationals will now hit the road for six games...After three with the Phillies, the Nationals
will travel to Boston to face the Red Sox and take part in their Opening Day on April 13.
Twenty-three of the Nationals next 36 games will be played on the road, including seven different cities (PHI, BOS, MIA, ATL, NYM, ARI & SD) and two time zones (ET, PT).
Since 2012, the Nationals have played to a 132-111 record on the road, including a 45-36
mark during the 2014 NL East championship season.
EARNED PRAISE; UNEARNED RUNS
The Nationals pitching staff has gotten off to a strong start, despite the teams 1-2 record through
three games (1.33 ERA)...While the Nationals starters have allowed 10 runs in three games, only
four of those runs have been earned, a 1.89 ERA (4th-best in NL).
2015 NATIONALS
The Nationals Opening Day 25-man roster includes 13 position players and 12 pitchers...Of
the 12 hurlers, three are southpaws (LHP Xavier Cedeno, LHP Gio Gonzalez and LHP Matt
Thornton)...The Nationals sport six infielders, five outfielders and two catchers...Washington will
begin the 2015 campaign with six players on the disabled list:
The average age of the Nationals Opening Day 25-man roster is 29.1 years old.
Six Nationals are new to the club in 2015: RHP Max Scherzer, INF Yunel Escobar, INF/OF
Clint Robinson, 2B Dan Uggla, OF Matt den Dekker, and OF Reed Johnson.
Of the Opening Day 25, three earned their spots after joining the organization as non-roster invitees to MLB Spring Training: INF/OF Clint Robinson, 2B Dan Uggla and OF Reed Johnson.
HOMEGROWN HEAVY
Eleven of Washingtons Opening Day 25 are homegrown talents: RHP Aaron Barrett (9th round,
2010), RHP Craig Stammen (12th round, 2005), RHP Stephen Strasburg (1st round, 2009),
RHP Drew Storen (1st round, 2009), RHP Jordan Zimmermann (2nd round, 2007), SS Ian
Desmond (3rd round, 2004), INF Danny Espinosa (3rd round, 2008), 1B Ryan Zimmerman
(1st round, 2005), OF Bryce Harper (1st round, 2010) INF/OF Tyler Moore (16th round, 2008),
and OF Michael A. Taylor (6th round, 2009).
SAME FACES, NEW PLACES
The Nationals will have four starting position players transitioning to new primary defensive positions this season: 1B Ryan Zimmerman (3B to 1B), INF Yunel Escobar (SS to 2B/3B), OF
Jayson Werth (RF to LF) and OF Bryce Harper (LF to RF).
(NL) EASTERN BIAS
Of the Nationals first 32 games, 26 will come against National League East rivals (3 vs. NYM, 3
at PHI, 4 vs. PHI, 3 at MIA, 3 at ATL, 4 at NYM, 3 vs. MIA, 3 vs. ATL)...However, from May 11 to
June 21, Washington will play only three games (of 38) within the Division.
INJURY REPORT
Six Nationals opened the 2015 season on the disabled list: RHP Erik Davis (15-day, right elbow
surgery), RHP Casey Janssen (15-day; right shoulder inflammation), OF Nate McLouth (15day; right shoulder surgery), 3B Anthony Rendon (15-day; left knee sprain), OF Denard Span
(15-day; right core muscle surgery) and OF Jayson Werth (15-day; right AC joint surgery).
Werth is scheduled to continue a rehab assignment with the Single-A Potomac Nationals
tonight as they take on Lynchburg (CLE).

THE SERIES
The Phillies lead the all-time (2005-pres.) series with the Nationals, 106-78, but
the Nationals have had better success in recent history...Since 2012 the Nationals lead the series, 29-27, and 20-18 since 2013...The Phillies held home field
advantage in 2014, though, as the Nationals went 3-6 in the City of Brotherly Love.

DATE IN NATIONALS HISTORY

APRIL 10 (5-5 on this date)
2014 - For the second time in as many days, a Jayson Werth home run proved
to be the difference between Washington and Miami. Werths two-run shot in the
third inning off Tom Koehler propelled the Nationals to an eventual 7-1 victory over
the Marlins. Stephen Strasburg fanned 12 batters in 6.2 innings of work and Ian
Desmond provided some insurance via his second career grand slam to give the
Nationals their second series sweep of the 2014 campaign.
