Whats so special about Asbury Park? Just ask Darryl McDaniels,

DMC of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group Run-DMC.
He was in town Friday for the kick-off of the inaugural Asbury Park
Music in Film Festival.
Its real, its not Hollywood, it aint showbiz, it aint the music business its culture, said McDaniels about the city at a festival reception inside Asbury Parks Paramount Theatre. They got films about
me, they got films about legendary musicians, films about punk rock,
films about everything and this is whats missing from entertainment.
DMC Squared, a film about McDaniels son, Dson McDaniels and
his attempt to follow his dad in a career in hip-hop, was to be screened
later Friday. In all, more than 50 music-themed films will be shown in
the city from Friday through Sunday.
McDaniels was impressed by the cultural vibrancy of Asbury Park.
This is like New York City in the 80s, when you would walk into a
bar or walk into a club or a restaurant and the Beastie Boys are over
there, Lou Reed is over there, the Ramones are over there, Deborah

JACKSON The body of a 34-year-old township man

who was shot several times was found inside a shuttered restaurant, and police are interviewing persons
of interest, authorities said.
The man, who was not identified, was found inside
the defunct Casanova Ristorante, in Romeos Plaza on
New Prospect Road, around 11 p.m. Thursday. Police
went to the restaurant, which had been inactive for
some time, after receiving a report of an injured employee, according to Ocean County Prosecutors Office
spokesman Al Della Fave.
Police were tight-lipped about the shooting, releasing only scant details about the case, but promising
more information as the investigation develops. They
declined to release the name of the victim until they notify his family.
Crime scene tape stretched across three storefronts
on Friday from a liquor store, across Casanova, to
Romeos Pizza and Pasta.
A man and a woman who was crying arrived at the
scene and spoke briefly to an official. They declined to

11 hurt in Eatontown apartment fire

STEPH SOLIS @STEPHMSOLIS
EATONTOWN Battling heavy smoke and flames,
firefighters rescued residents at the Garrison Apartments from an intense fire that injured nine residents
and two firefighters Friday, authorities said.
The fire, which broke out shortly after midnight in a
third-floor apartment at 3 Throckmorton Ave., trapped
a 69-year-old female tenant and prevented several others down the hall from escaping, according to a news
release from Eatontown Police Lt. Lawrence Tyler.
Flames were seen shooting out of the roof as fire
trucks crowded around the apartment building.
The first officers on the scene Police Sgt. David
Brown and Officer Ryan Braswell ran into the building to help residents escape but were blocked from doing so by the heavy smoke in the hallway and the fire in a
third-floor apartment.

Firefighters arrived shortly thereafter, and were

able to help residents escape the blaze through an apartment window and down a ladder. Two firefighters also
entered the burning third-floor apartment where the
fire started to rescue the woman who was trapped there,
Tyler said. She suffered second- and third-degree burns
throughout 80 to 90 percent of her body and was taken to
St. Barnabas Medical Center in Newark.
Of the 10 other people who were injured, nine including two Eatontown firefighters and two minors
suffered smoke inhalation, and were taken to Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank and Jersey Shore University
Medical Center in Neptune for treatment. In addition, a
78-year-old woman who reported chest pains was taken
to Riverview Medical Center, Tyler said.
