PROCEDURES

3.1 PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION

3.11 Personnel performing and interpreting Magnetic Particle Testing shall be ASNT
SNT-TC-1A Level II & Level III or PCN Level II & III Personnel.
3.12 Reports shall only be reviewed and signed by PCN Level II & III; or ASNT
Level II & III or ACCP Level II & III personnel.
3.2 MATERIAL TO BE TESTED
3.1.2 This procedure shall be applies in ferromagnetic materials in the form of
castings, forging, rolled and welded pieces.
3.3 EQUIPMENT AND MAGNETIZATION TECHNIQUES
3.3.1 Equipment
Alternate current electromagnetic yokes are the only ones allowed to be used.
3.3.2 The lifting power of the yoke shall be checked by means of its minimum
capacity to raise a mass with the maximum spacing between poles to be used.
Each yoke shall have a minimum raising capacity of 4.5 kg, to be verified in the
beginning of work and at every 8 hours period.
3.3.3 Magnetization Technique
Employing the electromagnetic yoke shall use the longitudinal magnetization
technique.
3.4

MAGNETIZATION CURRENT
Alternate current shall be used.

3.5

MAGNETIC PARTICLE & MEDIUM

3.5.1 Magnetic particles to be used in the inspection by wet or dry method shall have
geometric, magnetic and visibility characteristics which provide proper

of the wet method,
Magnetic
Particle shall be pressurized spray cans, Eg. Magnaflux 7HF or Ardrox 800/3.

3.5.2 Should can type being used, the bath strength shall have the concentration of
1.2ml to 2.4ml from a 100ml sample for magnetic black ink.
3.5.3 White background contrast medium shall be white emulsion paint or in ready
pressurized spray cans, E.g. Magnaflux 9WCP or Ardrox 8386 W rapid dry
white lacquer.

3.6

INSPECTION CONDITIONS
3.6.1 Surface Preparation
The surface to be inspected and the adjacent region (at least 25 mm) shall be
free from scale, slag, paint and other materials, which might interfere in the
inspection execution.
3.6.2 Lighting Condition
When testing / inspection is performed under normal light (white), the light
intensity measured on the test piece surface shall be at least 1000 lux
(measured with a light meter) daylight or a 100 Watt tungsten filament bulb at
a distance of 8 inches or 200 mm from the surface.
3.6.3 Temperature
During execution of inspection, the test piece temperature shall not be greater
than 300C for the dry method and 60C for the wet method.
3.6.4 Overlapping
The inspection shall be performed with overlapping enough to assure that
100% of the area to be inspected is covered with the required sensitivity. At
least two separate tests shall be performed in each area, so that the magnetic
flux lines of the second test are approximately perpendicular to those of the
first one.

3.7 INSPECTION METHOD

3.7.1 Dry magnetic particles shall be applied in such a way as to produce a light dust
layer, setting on the piece surface while it is being magnetized. Removal of the
excess shall be done while still under the magnetizing force, without disturbing
particles attracted by the retreating field.
3.7.2 Wet magnetic particles shall be sprayed on the area to be inspected during
application of the magnetizing force.

3.8 CHECKING THE INSPECTION EFFICIENCY

Checking of the inspection efficiency shall be done in the beginning of each working
period using the magnetic field indicator shown in Appendix 1, Figure 1. The
magnetic field in the inspection useful area shall be considered as adequate in case a
well defined line of magnetic particles appear on the face of the indicator.

3.10 INTERPRETATION OF INDICATION

3.10.1 Interpretation shall be made at intervals during the magnetizing process so
that large indication may be viewed before excessive diffusion occurs.
3.10.2 Indication shall be classified as True (relevant), Linear or Round.
(a) True (Relevant) are those which result from mechanical discontinuities
which indication is caused by leakage fields due to discontinuities in the
specimen. Only those indication with major dimensions greater than 1/16
inches (1.6mm) shall be considered relevant.
(b) Linear indications are those indications in which the length is more
than three (3) times the width.
(c) Round indications are those indications, which are circular or elliptical
with the length equal to or less than three (3) times, the width.
3.10.3 Any questionable or doubtful indications shall be retest to verify whether
actual defects are presents.
3.10.4 Any assessment of result shall be in accordance to Item 3.11.
3.11 RESULT ASSESSMENT CRITERION
This criterion for assessing the results shall be in accordance to client as specified in
their material specification or contractual documents for Acceptance and Rejection.
This assessment criterion shall be as per one of the following specification
requirement: ASME SECTION I 2010 Edition
ASME SECTION VII DIV 1 & 2 2010 Edition
ASME SECTION IX 2010 Edition
ASME/ANSI B31.1 2007 Edition
