The French geographer Onsime Reclus first coined the word francophonie in 1880

to designate geographical entities where French was spoken. Today, la francophonie

refers to the collective body of over one hundred million people all over the world
who speak French, exclusively or in part, in their daily lives. The term francophonie
refers to the diverse official organizations, governments, and countries that promote
the use of French in economic, political, diplomatic, and cultural exchanges.
Politically, French remains the second most important language in the world. In some
Francophone nations, French is the official language (France), or the co-official
language (Cameroon); in others, it is spoken by a minority who share a common
cultural heritage (Andorra). The French language is present in Europe, Africa, the
Americas, and Oceania.

Why Learn French?

The Francophone World
Culture Knowing French will open doors
to you around the world. As you study the
language, you will also come to understand
and appreciate the way of life, customs,
values, and cultures of people from many
different countries. Look at the map on
page xxii to see the areas of the world in
which French is spoken, either as a first
or second language. You might be
surprised to see that people speak
French in places as close to home as
Haiti, Martinique, Quebec, and
Louisiana.
Learning French can be fun and will
bring you a sense of accomplishment.
Youll be really pleased when you are
able to carry on a conversation with a
French-speaking person in French. You
will also be able to read French literature,
keep up with current events in French
magazines and newspapers, and understand
French films without relying on subtitles.
The French language will be a source of
enrichment for the rest of your life.

Career Opportunities
Business Your knowledge of French
will also be an asset to you in a variety
of careers. Many French companies are
multinational and have branches around
the world, including the United States.
Some of the fields in which French
companies excel are: clothing and fashion,
cosmetics, tourism, agriculture, the
automotive and aerospace industries, and
technology.
Research France is also a world leader
in high-energy physics research and
medical genetics. Did you know that
French and English are the two major
languages of the Internet? French can help
you in almost any career path you choose.

Why Learn French?

Language Link
Another benefit to learning French is that
it will improve your English. Once you
know another language, you can make
comparisons between the two and gain a
greater understanding of how languages
function. As a result, your use of English
will be more effective. Youll also come
across many French words that are used
in English. Just a few examples are: rouge,
chaise longue, chic, crpe, la mode,
omelette, charg daffaires, dj vu, dtente,
and laisser faire. French will also be helpful
if you decide to learn yet another language.
Once you learn a second language, the
learning process for acquiring other
languages becomes much easier.
French is a beautiful, rich language that is
spoken on many continents. Many people
use French on a daily basis as their second
language. Whatever your motivation is for
choosing to study it, French will expand your
horizons and increase your job opportunities.
Vive la langue franaise! Et bon voyage!
