MRF limited (an acronym for Madras Rubber Factory) is a private sector tyre

manufacturing company. The company is the largest tyre manufacturer in India. Its headquarters
is in Chennai, India. MRF manufactures a wide range of products including tyres, tubes,
conveyor belts, treads, toys, paints, etc. The company has also established the MRF Pace
Foundation for training fast bowlers and the MRF Challenge in motorsports and racing.
MRF was started as Madras Rubber Factory in 1946 by a young entrepreneur; K. M.
Mammen Mappillai as a small toy balloon manufacturing unit in a shed at Thiruvottiyur, Madras.
The company had humble beginnings with no machines, but the vision of the founder. Many
products that could be produced without a machine were produced. The list includes toy
balloons, industrial gloves, latex cast toys, contraceptives, etc. The company started
manufacturing tread rubber in 1952. It started producing tyres by getting into a partnership with
an Ohio based company named Mansfield Tyre & Rubber Company. MRF was incorporated in
1960 and it went public on 1 st April 1961. In order to develop export market, an office was set up
in Beirut, Lebanon in 1964.
MRF started manufacturing nylon tyres in 1973. In 1978, It entered into a technical
know-how collaboration with B.F.Goodrich. Mansfield Tyre & Rubber Company sold its share in
1979 and in the same year the company name was changed to MRF Limited. MRF was the tyre
supplier to Indias first modern car, Maruti 800. In 1989, the company launched Funskool
Indiaby collaborating with the worlds largest toy maker, Hasbro International USA. To
manufacture polyurethane paint formulations, they entered into a pact with Vapocure, Australia
and to manufacture conveyor and elevator belts they entered into a pact with Pirelli, Italy.
With sales of over Rs.13000Cr, MRF is the largest tyre manufacturer in India and it is the
13 largest tyre manufacturer in the world. It has manufacturing plants for tyres at Chennai,
Kottayam in Kerla, Medak in Telangana, Perambalur and Arakonam in Tamil Nadu and
Puduchery. The toy manufacturing plant is in Goa. Paints and coats are manufactured at two
plants in Chennai. MRF caters to all the vehicular segments like commercial vehicles, two-three
wheelers, passenger cars, tractors and trucks and holds more than 20% market share in the tyre
manufacturing sector. It has 68 sales centers throughout India and has 2500 distributors. It
currently exports its products to over 75 countries worldwide. MRF was the first Indian
Company to export tyres to US. It is also the first Indian company to market nylon tyres. The
major brands of MRF include MRF Nylogrip for bikes, MRF Wanderers and MRF ZVTs for cars
and SUVs, MRF Steel Muscle for trucks and buses, MRF Meteor all terrain tyres, etc. MRF was
awarded as the most ethical company in 1999 by Business World magazine. MRF won the JD
Power Award for the time in 2013. This award is considered equivalent to Oscars in the
automobile industry

TIMELINE OF MAJOR EVENTS:

1946: K. M. Mammen Mappillai founded MRF at Thiruvottiyur, Madras


1949: First office was established at 334, Thambu Chetty Street, Chennai.
1952: The first rubber mill machine was installed at the factory and MRF started
manufacturing tread rubber.

1955: Started manufacturing extruded, non-blooming and cushion backed tread rubber.

1956: Became the market leader in tread rubber in Indian market with 50% share.
1961: Became public. Entered into technical collaboration with Mansfield Tyre Company
of USA.
1963: Rubber research center was inaugurated by Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal
Nehru.
1964: First overseas office in Beirut (Lebanon) to start exports.
1967: Became the 1st Indian company to export tyres to USA.
1970: Kottayam plant started operations.
1971: Goa plant, built in record 18 months started.
1972: Arakonam plant became operational.
1973: Launched India`s first NYLON tyre.
1979: Turnover crossed Rs.100Cr.
1980: Collaborated with BF Goodrich Tyre Company of USA.
1984: MRF tyres got selected to be fitted on Maruti 800.
1985: MRF Nylongrip tyres were launched.
1986: Won 6 awards for quality improvement. The same year it also won the National
Institution for Quality Assurance Award.
1988: MRF Pace Foundation was setup. Dennis Lillie was appointed as its director to
nurture and develop the fast bowlers.
1989: Collaborated with Hasbro international, worlds largest toy maker and launched
Funskool India, which is the most modern toy project in Asia. It also collaborated with
Vapocure of Australia for producing poly-urethane paint formulations.
1990: The fifth unit for tyre and tubes manufacturing was opened at Medak, Andhra
Pradesh. In the same year it collaborated with Pirelli, Italy to manufacture conveyor belts.
In this year it also bagged the Vishveshvariah Award for the best business house in South
India. MRF also bagged the HBS Award for the best corporate performance.
1991: Moved to its own corporate office which became a landmark in Chennai.
1993: Became the first Indian tyre company to achieve a turnover of Rs.1000 crores. It
got a place among the top ten respected organizations in India.
It was a proud moment for the company when its Founder and Chairman
Mr.K.M.Mammen Mappillai was honored with the PADMASHREE award for his
contribution to the industry, the only industrialist from South India to be accorded this
honor.
1996: Golden jubilee year. It crossed a turnover of Rs.2000 crores. A new plant at
Pondicherry was set up for manufacture of radial tyres.
1999: Declared as the most ethical company by the Business World.
2000: The smile campaign was launched on Indian roads.
2002: Won the award for No.1 customer satisfaction by J.D.Power, Asia Pacific.
2003: Won No.1 award for customer satisfaction by J.D.Power, Asia Pacific for the 2 nd
consecutive year.

2004: Won the No.1 award for customer satisfaction by J.D.Power, Asia Pacific for the 3rd
consecutive time. The company also crossed sales of Rs.3000 crores.
2006: For the fourth time, MRF won the No.1 award for customer satisfaction by
J.D.Power, Asia Pacific.
2007: Launched premium truck tyre Super Lug 50-FS and ZSLK Tyres
2008: Won JD Power award for the 6th time.
2009: Appointed Mr. Sanjay Sharad Vaidya as a Director of the Company to fill vacancy
due to the demise of the Director Mr. S Nandagopal, and also appointed Dr. Salim Joseph
Thomas as an Additional Director of the Company.
2010: Started work on its new plant- a 300-acre site in Tiruchi.
2012: Mr. Jacob Kurian and Mr. M. Meyyappan appointed as AdditionalvDirectors of the
Company.
