Introduction Why Do Good People Fall Short?
o Its all about human behavior - regardless of who you are dealing with
children or adults, students or employees
o The issue is to optimize the performance of those you lead whether its
sales, product quality, productivity, teamwork, grades, etc.
o This book identifies the tools that can be used to change their behavior
for the better.
o Numerous studies show that the expectations of the supervisor can have
either positive or negative consequences on a subordinates production
called the Pygmalion Effect.
o Numerous studies also show that if you give patients anything at all, you
heighten their expectations of getting well (on average by 30%) called
the Placebo Effect.
o Conclusion
We often tell people what we expect of them by our words or body
language. Sometimes simply by the way we make eye contact.
To bring out the best in your employees, students or children you
must communicate positive expectations, clearly and consistently
through your words, your tone of voice, and your body language.

o Action plans spell out all the steps, large and small, that must be taken to
meet overall objectives.
o For example, your goal might be a 25% increase in sales volume your
action plans might include targeting five high-potential clients, creating a
sales call plan, creating an e-mail marketing plan, etc.
o The more engaged people are in the development of goals, plans and
feedback, the more accountable they become.
o Put the action plan on paper
o Most people want to be held accountable for getting results but left to
reach their goals on their own.

o In order to change the behavior of others you must first modify your
own behavior.
o Ask yourself, What do I have change in order for others to do their
best?
