Apres Un Reve
Composer: Gabriel Faure
Date Composed: 1870- 1878 (One of a Three Piece Collection (Trois Melodies) , so
composed over time)
French descent; Pamiers, France (SW)
"Apres Un Reve" is a piece composed by French composer, Gabriel Faure. This
composer was born in Pamiers, France, which is in the South Western area of the
country. This piece is one of three melodies (a french art song) that Faure wrote
between 1870 to 1878, which is where Romantic Era of Music took place.

RomanticismNot only because during time period, began to express emotions and feelings.
Before classical music comprised of music enforced with rules on how to compose.
Later with Beethoven being one of the leading innovators of the Romantic Era,
music began to blossom with emotional exaggeration. Cantabile, singing, lyrical.;
Passionate and Expressive; attempt at connecting to human feelings while still in
confines of musical theory; imagination; great sense of time (time up to musician,
rubato?);
Apres Un Reve analysis:
tells story of meeting lover in dream. romanticism shows expressiveness and
creativity (story behind music), sense of lyrical gives dreamy feel, try to make as if
dreaming.

The Romantic period of music was a time period that took place around 1815 to 1910, which
historically, was also around the time the Industrial Revolution was unraveling among the world. The idea
of Romanticism (in music) stemmed from Beethoven breaking new grounds and writing passionate music
that moved the audience to feel what was being struck at every bow stroke, or blown at every breath.
Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 broke the barrier of classical music. Although following all the constraints
of music theory, Beethoven was able to develop an arch in his symphony, which kept the audience
members at attention. Music of the Romantic Era is generally described as music that was composed
between the years 1815 to 1910 (give or take a few years). However, that is not always the case since not
all composers wrote with such compassion. Romantic music is described as music that contained
emotion. It attracted the human mind by connecting to the listeners via human feelings. Before, classical
music written by Bach or Mozart consisted of music that consisted of just a melody made from rules that
shaped the piece. With Beethoven and other composers following him, many began to express
exaggeration in their composition and develop a story that intrigued the audience's imagination.
French composer, Gabriel Faure, is another dominant figure in the world of Romanticism. He was
born on May 12, 1845 in the town of Pamiers, France. He is known for his lyrical melodies that sounds
soothing to the human ear. One of his compositions, "Apres Un Reve", is one of his more popular works
for voice. The piece is one of three different melodies (a French art song), which he began to write in
1870 and finished in 1878.
Based on the characteristics of Romantic music, "Apres Un Reve" connects with the audience and
leaves the audience imagine a story that goes along with the music. "Apres Un Reve" establishes a story
from the poem "After a dream" (a literal translation). The story goes that in the music, a dreamer
envisions a fascinating tale of love when all of a sudden, it is abruptly stopped by his awakening of
reality. Once he has returned back to his cruel reality, he longs for his fantasy of true love to return to him
once more. The point of the story shows how "Apres Un Reve" paints a picture in the listeners head and
touches the audience's heart with the emotions that is displayed. The piece displays Romantic
characteristics with the lyrical, expressive melodies that felt human. Compared to melodies previously
heard before during the classical era, the music was confined and did not allow much room to admire
what was human. Faure's composition moves the audience with his exotic experimentation of emphasis
on melody, or for this instance, the solo voice (or bass). His experimentation has helped his music to
become popular and admired by all audiences, amazed at how expressive the moving melody is.
