RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR FOUR YEAR

B.TECH. DEGREE COURSE


(w.e.f. 2013-2014 Examinations and onwards)
1.0

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION FOR ADMISSION


Candidates seeking admission into I year of the 4-Year B.Tech degree programme
shall have passed the Intermediate Examination of the Board of Intermediate
Education, Andhra Pradesh with Mathematics and Physical Science (Physics and
Chemistry) as optional subjects or any other examination recognized by the
Kakatiya University as equivalent to it.

2.0

CONFERMENT OF THE DEGREE


The degree of Bachelor of Technology in a specified branch of Engineering will
be conferred on a candidate who has fulfilled the following conditions.

The candidate, after admission to the first year of the four year B.Tech.
degree program, has to pursue a regular course of study for not less than 4
academic/3 academic years in the case of lateral entry students in an
engineering college, affiliated to Kakatiya University, Warangal and
The candidate must have satisfied the academic requirements of the
specified branch of engineering in each semester/year hereinafter
prescribed.

THE PROGRAMMES OF STUDY


The programmes of study prescribed for the degree of Bachelor of Technology
shall provide for specialization as approved by the Kakatiya University from time
to time

4.0

REGULAR PROGRAMME OF STUDY


A candidate will be deemed to have pursued a regular program of study as a full
time student provided he/ she satisfies the following conditions:
4.1 The student cannot be an employee of any Government or Private
organization except when on an appropriate leave for the duration of the
study, and
4.2 The candidate must not have enrolled as a student in any other degree or
diploma program recognized by the Government or Kakatiya Universit y

5.0

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS
Attendance requirements of a semester/ year shall be deemed to have been
satisfied provided:
5.1 The candidate puts in a minimum aggregate attendance of 75% prescribed for
the semester/ year. However, condonation of attendance to a maximum of

10% is permitted by the Vice-Chancellor on prior intimation (on medical


grounds) for the semester/ year, subject to production of medical certificate
and payment of Rs. 200/- as condonation fee.
NOTE: - The attendance at the mid session test and University examination shall
be not considered in the computation of the percentage of attendance.
5.2 A candidate who failed to satisfy the above requirements of attendance shall
be detained and will not be permitted to appear at the University
examinations of that semester/year.
5.3 The candidate, who has been detained for failure to satisfy rule 5.1 during the
I year B.Tech. shall be given readmission into the course on the
recommendation of the institute.
5.4 The candidate, who has been detained during II, III & IV years for failure to
satisfy rule 5.1 shall be required to re-register during the subsequent years
and repeat the whole programme of the semester/ year by seeking permission
from the University well in advance before commencement of the classes.
6.0

DURATION OF AN ACADEMIC YEAR AND A SEMESTER:


6.1 The first year of the B.Tech. degree programme shall consist of 32 weeks of
instruction including the periods of mid-session tests and annual University
examinations.
6.2 The second and subsequent years of the B.Tech. degree programme will have
two semesters and each semesters shall consist of 16 weeks of instruction
including the mid-session tests and excluding the University examinations. \

7.0

REGISTRATION :
7.1

All students are required to get themselves registered for the course by
paying the prescribed tuition fee within the first twenty working days of
each academic year failing which they shall not be allowed to attend the
course prescribed for that academic year.

7.2

In case of admissions made by designated authority like the Convener of


EAMCET, the registration period of 20 working days shall be counted
from the date of issue of press note for the commencement of classes
either by Convener/ University/ College.

7.3

Candidates detained due to shortage of attendance are required to get


readmission orders from the University of register themselves at the
college within 7 days of commencement of class work of the next
academic session and pay the prescribed tuition fee within the first fifteen
days of each academic year failing which they shall not be allowed to
attend the course work prescribed for that academic year.

8.0

EVALUATION
8.1

Guidelines for Internal Assessment of Theory Courses:


The performance of the student in the first year and every semester
thereafter shall be evaluated course-wise as detailed in the scheme of
instruction and evaluation.
The evaluation of theory courses in the institute is through internal
assessment which is to be divided into two major components namely:
Component 1: Teachers Weekly Assessment (TWA) for 10 Marks.
Evaluation should be on a continued basis. It is recommended to
allocate 10 marks to this component. These marks are to be awarded for
every week after assessing the student by submission of the assignment,
conducting a quiz in the syllabus covered till then in the concerned
subject, viva-voice and attendance of the student in that week. Concerned
teacher should display and maintain record of this assessment with a copy
filed in the department. This record shall be the basis of award of TWA
while finalizing the internal assessment.
Component 2: Class Test(s) (CT) / Make-Up Test (MT) for 40 Marks.
Internal assessment of theory courses in the first year shall be
based on best of two class tests and a make-up test. Each test will be for
two hours duration. The class tests test will be conducted after completion
of 11 weeks and 22 weeks of instruction with part of syllabus covered
until class test-I and from class test-I to class test-II. Make-up test will be
conducted after completion of the last day of instruction. Part of
syllabus will be decided by the concerned faculty member(s) in
consultation with their Head of the Department and the Principal of the
Institute.
In case of candidates who have appeared at all the three tests, the
performance rated best at two out of three tests shall be considered for the
award of internal assessment. Each of the tests considered shall have the
same weightage.
Internal assessment of theory courses in each of the semesters of
2nd and subsequent years shall be based on a class test and make-up test of
two hours duration conducted approximately after 8 weeks of instruction
and with part of syllabus covered until class test and from class test to
make-up test for respective test. Part of syllabus will be decided by the
concerned faculty member(s) in consultation with their Head of the
Department and the Principal of the Institute.
In case of candidates who have appeared at both the tests the better
performance at the two tests shall be considered for the award of sessional
marks.

8.2

Guidelines for Internal Assessment of Laboratory Courses:


The evaluation of laboratory classes should be divided in to two major
components namely, Evaluation on a continued basis and end
semester/year test.
Component 1: (Evaluation on continued basis)
It is recommended to allocate 20 marks to this component. These marks
are to be awarded for every experiment carried out by the student in
his/her regular practical class on weekly basis.
Component 1:1 Experiment (10 Marks)
The student is required to write the principle, theory and calculation
method of the experiment allotted to him either in the observation
notebook or on a separate sheet immediately after entering the laboratory.
At the end of the experiment the student should show the observations and
the result to the teacher. The marks of this sub-component are to be
awarded taking all the points mentioned above into consideration.
Component 1.2: Submission of Record Book (10 Marks)
The student has to submit the practical record book updated every week.
The teacher has to ask a few viva questions based on experiment carried
out by the student in the previous class. The marks awarded in this subcomponent should be reduced depending on the extent of delay in the
submission of record book.
The marks of component 1.1 & component 1.2 are to be entered separately
by the staff members in students attendance registers regularly
Component 2: (Evaluation at the end of the semester/year): (05
Marks)
An internal assessment laboratory test and the viva-voce are to be
conducted at the end of the semester/year.

8.3

Guidelines for Internal Assessment of Project Work:


The project evaluation committee is to be constituted with 4 members i.e.,
Chairman- Head of the Department, Convener- Senior faculty and 2 other
faculty members. In addition to the above members the supervisor must be
present while students under her/his supervision are presenting.
The committee is to evaluate the progress of the project works conducting
2 presentations in first semester and 3 presentations in second semester.
I-Semester
Total Marks-50
25 marks for presentation
25 marks for regular evaluation by supervisor

1st presentation one week before 1sr mid examination for 10 marks:
Registration presentation.
2nd presentation one week before 2nd mid examination for 15 marks:
Status presentation.
Registration Presentation: Identification of problem and literature
survey.
II-Semester
Total Marks-150
75 marks for presentation
75 marks for regular evaluation by supervisor
1st presentation one month after commencement of class work for
25 marks: Status presentation.
2nd presentation one month after 1st presentation for 25 marks:
Status presentation.
3rd presentation and Viva-voce one week before 2nd mid examinations for
25 marks: Final presentation.
Status Presentation: Status of the project work-work already carried out,
balance of work to be carried out.
Final Presentation: Together with thesis a presentation to be made & the
project work should be demonstrated.
Supervisors are to evaluate the project works regularly based on the
progress report submitted by the students in every work for 10 marks and
the same should be recorded in the project attendance register.

9.0

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR PASSING A COURSE


A candidate is deemed to have passed in a course if he/ she secure:

35 percent of the marks assigned to the University examination of the


course and
35 percent of the marks assigned to the internal assessment and University
examination of the course taken together.

CONDITIONS FOR PROMOTION


A candidate will have to satisfy the attendance requirements for the year/ semester
for promotion to the next higher semester, in addition.
10.1

For promotion into the III year of 4-year B.Tech I semester, the candidate
should not have more than two (2) backlog papers of I year of 4-year
B.Tech course.

For promotion into the IV year of 4-year B.Tech. I semester, the candidate
should have cleared all the subjects (theory and practical) of I & II year of
4-year B.Tech in all respects.

10.3

Marks secured in the subject environmental studies will not be considered


for the purpose of counting backlogs. However, pass in the annual
examination is compulsory for the award of degree.

SUPPLEMENTARY EXAMINATIONS:
A candidate who failed in a course (theory or Practical) can appear at a
subsequent University examination in the same curse as a supplementary
candidate to fulfill the minimum requirements for securing a pass in that course.
However, the sessional marks secured by the candidate in the course during the
Semester / year of study shall remain unaltered.

IMPROVEMENT EXAMINATION:
A candidate may opt to re-appear all the Papers of a semester/Year at the
immediately succeeding university examinations for improving his/her
Performance. Further, when once the candidate appears for the improvement
examination he/ she shall forgo the marks secured in the earlier University
examination in the whole set courses Prescribed for that semester/year but shall
retain the sessional marks.
However, the candidates who register for improvement examinations and wish to
drop from appearing the examinations, by written application to the Controller of
Examination, KU through the Principal of the college concerned. Before
commencement of examinations, shall be permitted to retain their earlier marks.
The Marks obtained through the improvement examinations up to III year as per
the norms shall be considered for the award of distinction and Gold Medal,

ELGIBILITY FOR AWARD OF B.TECH DEGREE:


13.1

A candidate shall be deemed to have satisfied the requirements for the


award of the B.Tech. degree Provided he/ she passes in all the courses
including Environmental Studies (Theory and Practical) Prescribed in the
scheme of instruction within a Period of eight consecutive Years (6 Years
in the case of lateral entry candidates) from the year of admission to the
Programme.

13.2

A candidate who fails to fulfill all the requirements for the award of
B.Tech. degree in a Period of eight consecutive academic years from they
of his /her admission to the B.Tech. degree programme shall forfeit his / her
enrolment to the programme.

13.3 For the Students admitted in the lateral entry scheme their award o division
is based on aggregate marks obtained in I & II Semesters of II, III & IV
Year subjects.

14.0 AWARD OF DIVISION


The weight age for award of degree is 50% of marks in aggregate of 1 st and 2nd
year and 100% of marks in aggregate in 3rd and 4th year put together. However, the marks
secured in the subject Environmental Studies will not be considered for award of
class/division, Division of awarded as follows:

First
Division Candidates who secure 70% and more marks in aggregate and
with Distinction
pass all the examinations along with the batch of students
admitted with them shall be awarded. The candidates may
improve up to 3rd Year. However, the failed candidates in any
paper any time during the course shall not be awarded
Distinction and Gold Medal

First Division

Candidates who Secure 60% and more marks in aggregate


within time frame of the course i,e., 8 years (6 years in case of
lateral entry) shall be awarded

Second Division

Candidates who secure 48% and more marks but less than 60%
in aggregate within time frame of the course i,e., 8 years,(6
years in case of lateral entry) shall be awarded

Pass Division

Candidates who secure 35% and more but less than 48% marks
in aggregate shall be awarded

The student on successful completion of his course, transcript shall be awarded on


the basis of Credit systems. The details are as follows.

15.0 ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES


The classes for Environmental Studies shall be conducted in I year as per scheme
of instruction and Evaluation.

16.0 GENERAL
The award of degree to a candidate shall be withheld if:
16.1 He / She has not cleared to the Instruction/hostel etc.
16.2 A case of disciplinary action is pending against him/her.
16.3 The marks secured in sessional evaluation and University examinations shall
be shown separately in the marks sheet.
16.4 If a candidate who has pursed a regular programme of study of any
performance whishes to repeat that year/semester to improve his/her
performance, he/she may be permitted with permission of the University to
enroll again as a regular student for that year/semester when it is next
offered, depending on the availability of seats, provided that he/she
undertakes to forgo the attendance and sessional /University examination
marks secured by him/her for that year/semester previously and provided
further that he/she has not undergone a regular programmer of study in
any higher semester. This opportunity shall be given only once for each
year/semester.
16.5 Whenever ambiguities arise in interpreting the regulations, the Standing
Committee of the Kakatiya University shall have the power to make rules or
to issue clarifications for removing such ambiguities.
16.6 The Academic Regulations should be read as a whole for purpose of any
interpretation.
