Anyfrequencybelowthecutofffrequency(fc)willonlyresultinevanescentordecaying
modes.Thewaveguidewillnottransportenergyatthesefrequencies.Inaddition,ifthe
waveguideisoperatingatafrequencyjustabovefc,thentheonlymodethatisapropagating
modewillbetheTE10mode.Allothermodeswillbedecaying.Hence,theTE10mode,sinceit
hasthelowestcutofffrequency,isreferredtoasthedominantmode.
Everymodethatcanexistwithinthewaveguidehasitsowncutofffrequency.Thatis,fora
givenmodetopropagate,theoperatingfrequencymustbeabovethecutofffrequencyforthat
mode.Bysolving[5]inamoregeneralform,thecutofffrequencyfortheTEmnmodeisgiven

dominantTMmodehasahighercutofffrequencythanthedominantTEmode.Thiswillbe
