The Diagnosis of Addiction Clients

Counselors and psychologists enter into the counseling relationship with the goal of appropriate
assessment and diagnosis in determining successful treatment plans for their client. The
diagnosis of addiction clients is a specific, complex, and often challenging process. After
evaluating multiple case studies, select a case study from your textbook or other source, which
will best illustrate the application of each of these components in professional practice.
Using your chosen case study, illustrate the application of each of these components of this
process in a well-presented paper:

Professional and personal ethical issues, responsibilities, and concerns

Initial interviewing
Structure and application of the assessment process
DSM-IV-TR consideration and criteria
Appropriate use of screening and assessment tools

Your paper should include a consideration and discussion of each of the above topics that clearly
illustrates your understanding of the process as well as your ability to apply your learning to
clients. Your commentary should include an investigation of the potential differences in applying
each of these components subject to the nature of the client's addiction, the environment in which
you are working, and your own skill and training in the correct use of each technique.
Your paper will be enhanced by your use of psychological research from a minimum of two
journal articles using APA citation format. Please be sure to fully address each component of this
Assignment within the body of your paper, including at least two references in support of your
observations and conclusions.
You will need to consider both the positive and negative contributions each step of the
assessment and diagnosis process contributes to client treatment and recovery. In addition, you
should include further consideration of the implications of each of these initial treatment steps
and how they influence the client's ongoing treatment experience and potential recovery.
The Assignment should:
Follow assignment directions (review grading rubric for best results).
Use correct APA formatting per the APA Publication Manual, 6th Edition.
Demonstrate college-level communication through the composition of original materials
in Standard American English.
Be written in Standard American English and be clear, specific, and error-free. If needed,
