Weinland Park Community Civic Association

Safety Committee
Summary of Meeting of April 16, 2015
Ahmed Ebady, chair of the committee, called the meeting to order shortly after 6 p.m. in the
citys Northside Neighborhood Pride Center.
Those in attendance introduced themselves. Katarina Karac, assistant city attorney, explained her
role as Zone 4 attorney for the Columbus City Attorneys Office.
The committee discussed the two recent shootings at Veliko Ventures properties. Sarita Penn and
Rochelle Simmons of The Barcus Company explained the management practices.
Mr. Ebady explained that the persons at the meeting represent resources that can work with
Veliko Ventures and The Barcus Company to maintain public safety at those properties. Mr.
Ebady pressed a desire to keep the channels of communications open.
Ms. Karac noted:

None of the Veliko Ventures units have a rental contact listed on the Franklin County
Auditors website.
She encouraged The Barcus Company to keep an open communication with code
enforcement.
She expressed a concern that public safety problems in the Veliko Ventures units could
impact the elementary school, Huckleberry House, and the Schoenbaum Family Center,
which are located nearby.
She suggested that The Barcus Company have a lease with expectations, procedures for
inspection of the unit, and thorough background checks.

Mr. Ebady also suggested that The Barcus Company sign the form that permits police officers to
act as an agent of the property owner.
Columbus Police Detective Rob Vass reported that a suspect has been identified in the shooting
earlier in April of a woman who then sought help at the Marathon station.
Regarding the citys stationary safety cameras, Isom Nivins suggested that the committee contact
the citys public safety director about moving the cameras. Mr. Ebady suggested that the
neighborhood purchase its own safety cameras. Mr. Sterrett suggested that the civic association
pursue both ideas. Mr. Ebady and Mr. Sterrett agreed to write a letter to the public safety director

on behalf of the Safety Committee to ask that one or more of the cameras be moved to new hot
spots in the neighborhood.
Mr. Nivins said a problem in some neighborhoods is open fires. He has information about the
regulation of open fires that he will share with neighborhood civic leaders.
The committee will discuss at its next meeting whether to sponsor a neighborhood event as part
of the annual National Night Out on the first Tuesday in August. National Night Out will be
celebrated in the same week this year as the annual Weinland Park Neighborhood Festival.
Mr. Sterrett announced that the Weinland Park Billboard Project resulted in the unveiling on
April 11 of an image for the neighborhood on the large Clear Channel Communications billboard
on North Fourth Street just north of East Fifth Avenue. Jean Pitman of the Wexner Center for the
Arts worked with neighborhood teenagers in the R.I.S.E. Youth Club and with a team of local
artists to create the designs. The billboard image will change every three months through April
2016.
Mr. Nivins announced that he had received 10 bicycles that have been donated for the annual
Weinland Park Neighborhood Festival on August 8. The bicycles will be given away at the
festival.
The next meeting of the Safety Committee will be Thursday, May 21, at 6 p.m. in the citys
Northside Neighborhood Pride Center, 248 E. 11th Avenue.
